Canada to take steps to protect vanishing North Atlantic right whales from ships

Toronto Star8 hours ago
The Canadian government says it is taking steps this summer to protect a vanishing species of whale from lethal collisions with ships in its waters.
The whale is the North Atlantic right whale, which numbers only about 370. The whales give birth off the southeastern U.S. in the winter and spring and migrate north to New England and Canada to feed.

Canadian men's soccer team to host Australia in Montreal for October friendly

MONTREAL – The Canadian men's national soccer team will host Australia in its first match in Montreal since 2017 on Oct. 10 at Stade Saputo. Canada Soccer announced the opponent Thursday for the international friendly in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup. No. 30 Canada finished fourth at last summer's Copa America but dropped out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a quarterfinal loss to Guatemala last Sunday. The men's national team holds a 3-1-5 record against Australia, which currently stands 26th in the FIFA rankings. The Socceroos qualified for the 2026 World Cup — co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States — with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in June. The Canadian men will also face No. 14 Colombia in an Oct. 14 friendly at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. Last time out in Montreal, Canada defeated Curaçao 2-1 in June 2017. Current captain Alphonso Davies made his international debut in the match. 'We're excited to be playing another high-quality match on home soil with our first game in Montreal since 2017,' Canada coach Jesse Marsch said in a statement. 'Connecting the people's team with the Canadian community is one of our main priorities as we build excitement ahead of our home FIFA World Cup in 2026. 'We know how passionate the Quebec community is for our team, and we look forward to a packed house in October.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Montreal will also serve as the host city for the Canadian men's final preparations for the 2026 World Cup with a final sendoff match against an opponent to be determined by qualifying results and the tournament draw. Canada will host 13 games at the 2026 tournament, seven in Vancouver and six in Toronto. Canada will also travel to Europe for friendlies against No. 45 Romania and No. 29 Wales on Sept. 5 and Sept. 9, respectively. The World Cup is scheduled for June 11 to July 19, 2026, with 48 teams competing in 16 cities across the three host countries. The tournament draw is scheduled for January. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 3, 2025.

Marriott to launch three new hotels in Canada by 2030

Marriott International has revealed plans to introduce three new hotels in Calgary, Canada, as part of a mixed-use development in the city's Culture + Entertainment District. The W, JW Marriott, and an Autograph Collection hotels are scheduled to open at Stampede Park in 2028, 2029, and 2030, respectively. The developments will be spearheaded by Calgary-based joint-venture partners Truman and Louson. The W and JW Marriott properties are expected to be among the tallest residential towers in Western Canada. Truman's chief operating officer Tony Trutina said: "As a Calgary-based and family-owned company, we have a deep commitment to this city, and we believe this project will be a significant catalyst for the local economy. 'Beyond creating numerous construction jobs, these hotels are expected to generate substantial long-term employment opportunities, boost tourism, and support local businesses through increased visitor spending." Soaring at 69 storeys, the W Calgary tower is designed to include 157 guest rooms, 27 suites, and 239 branded residences. The property will feature a 7,500ft² Spa, a speciality restaurant, 16,259ft² of meeting space, a FIT studio, and a rooftop bar. Residents will have access to exclusive facilities and a private entrance. The JW Marriott hotel will stand at 62 storeys, featuring 248 guest rooms and 120 branded residences. Amenities will include 32,500ft² of meeting space, indoor and outdoor pools, a JW Market, a JW Garden, a retail area, and additional facilities. These announcements build on Truman's recent collaboration with Calgary Stampede to create a 320-key hotel operating under the Autograph Collection Hotels brand. This full-service property will offer 320 guest rooms, 15,000ft² of meeting and event space, and 14,000ft² of food and beverage options, including multiple restaurants, a lobby bar, and a rooftop lounge. A name for this hotel will be unveiled later this year. Marriott International Canada chief operating officer Paul Cahill said: 'We are thrilled to closely collaborate with Truman and Louson, whose combined passion and love for Calgary will be a perfect complement to the elevated service that guests have come to expect from the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.' These projects will provide a total of more than 700 premium and luxury hotel rooms and nearly 360 branded residences. This development meets the growing demand for accommodations near venues such as the BMO Centre and the upcoming Scotia Place event centre. With a combined investment of C$1.47bn ($1.1bn) from Truman and Louson, these projects are expected to support more than 9,100 jobs while under construction and create over 2,000 ongoing positions in operations and tourism. Earlier this year, Marriott International broadened its Canadian portfolio with the launch of Muir, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Halifax. K-Way names Marco D'Avanzo head of international business

K-Way has hired an outerwear expert to spearhead the next phase of its international expansion drive. The France-born brand, now owned by Italian group BasicNet, has recently appointed Marco D'Avanzo as chief international business officer. D'Avanzo comes from Canadian high-end outerwear brand Moose Knuckles, which he joined in 2016 as executive vice-president global sales, based in Milan. He will still be based in Milan in his new role at K-Way. In the course of his career, D'Avanzo has worked at Woolrich, Guess, Versace and Benetton, and has now joined a thriving, growing sportswear brand. K-Way is, alongside Kappa, one of the mainstays of BasicNet, which still holds a 60% stake in the brand, while the remaining 40% was acquired at the end of last year by investment firm Permira, via its Permira Growth Opportunities II investment fund. K-Way has a strong market position in Europe, notably in France and Italy, and is positioned in the premium segment. Last year, K-Way dropped a first collaboration with US label Ulla Johnson, which was showing in New York. Previous collaborations for K-Way include names like Play Comme des Garçons, Maison Kitsuné, Soeur, Diemme, Tiny Cottons and Agnès b. They have all contributed to boosting K-Way's visibility, as it aims to enter new markets. In 2024, BasicNet reported that the total business volume generated by its brands was in the region of €1.19 billion, three quarters of which was produced in Europe.
