Phoenix Waters, Studio Target Sign Tri-Regional Film-TV Partnership, Set ‘Shashou' (EXCLUSIVE)
The strategic alliance, revealed during Hong Kong FilMart, will focus on jointly developing, financing and producing films, series and microdramas — the latter being short-form digital content that has gained significant traction throughout Asia as vehicles for audience engagement and brand integration.

Leading the partnership's initial slate is 'Shashou,' an international action thriller that pays homage to classic Hong Kong cinema while incorporating Western influences. Set to commence production later this year with a global cast, the project has already secured participation from Berkeley Media Group and Ostara Pictures, with SC Films International handling sales and MAD Solutions acquiring MENA rights.
'Amidst the various challenges facing the global film and media industry, I believe that our collaboration and innovation will be key to illuminating the future,' said Doyeon Julia Kim, CEO of Studio Target. 'Through this partnership, we will maximize diverse investment resources and production capabilities in each region, produce commercially successful content, and achieve global market expansion.'
The alliance emerges against a backdrop of industry challenges. Hong Kong's film sector has been seeking new avenues for growth and international expansion, while Korea's industry grapples with sustainability issues amid escalating production costs and stagnant budgets.
As part of the collaboration, Studio Target will handle the South Korean release of 'Tape' later this year, highlighting the growing synergy between the companies.
Phoenix Waters Productions, recognized for East-West collaborations, has been instrumental in revitalizing Hong Kong cinema through projects like 'Tape,' 'Forensic Psychologist,' and 'The Audition.' Meanwhile, Studio Target has established itself as a powerhouse in South Korean film production, recently producing box office hit 'Hitman 2.'
'This partnership represents more than just a business deal — it's a commitment to building a sustainable future for Hong Kong and Korean cinema,' said Bizhan Tong, CEO of Phoenix Waters Productions. 'By combining our creative and production strengths, we aim to develop films and series that resonate on a global scale, showcasing the incredible talent and rich storytelling from these regions.'
Both companies are inviting global investors, distributors, and industry leaders to participate in the initiative as they advance their slate of projects.

Jamie Lee Curtis on Reuniting with Lindsay Lohan for ‘Freakier Friday,' Her ‘The Bear' Emmy Nom and Stephen Colbert's ‘Late Show' Cancellation: ‘It's Awful'
Jamie Lee Curtis says she's learned a lot from Lindsay Lohan since reuniting for 'Freakier Friday,' the much buzzed-about sequel to 2003's 'Freaky Friday.' 'She has taught me so much,' Curtis told Variety's Marc Malkin on Thursday at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. 'She has her team, where her two people would be standing on either side of a camera holding a big light. It's Lindsay lighting — that would have been good branding — they hold lights so that we look better. So, I've learned a lot from her already. We had a good time. We love each other.' More from Variety Comic-Con: 'Wicked' Star Marissa Bode to Judge Her Universe Fashion Show (EXCLUSIVE) Tony Morrison Departs GLAAD, Launches Media Company (EXCLUSIVE) 'American Love Story' Star Sarah Pidgeon on Carolyn Bessette Hair and Fashion Backlash: 'I Understand How Beloved She Is' The original movie, based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel of the same name, follows mother-daughter duo Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) switching bodies. The new story features a 'multigenerational twist' that features Anna as a mom. 'It's a movie for today,' Curtis said of the second installment. 'It is a happy, nostalgic, funny, sweet, heartfelt, Disney movie right at the end of the summer. There haven't been a lot of movies for women, and this is a love letter to every mother, grandma, sister, cousin and daughter.' Curtis and Lohan will be joined by returning cast members Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao. Additionally, 'The Acolyte' star Manny Jacinto, 'Never Have I Ever' breakout Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters will also appear in the sequel. Andrew Gunn, who produced the first movie, is producing the sequel alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr, with a script from 'Dollface' creator Jordan Weiss. Nisha Ganatra directs the film. Curtis, Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin and Lohan also serve as executive producers. 'Freakier Friday' is in theaters Aug. 8. Curtis also talked about her recent and second Emmy nomination for her work as Donna on 'The Bear' following her win last year. 'I can't believe it,' Curtis said, adding, 'It's just beautiful. It's a beautiful show and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I love it. I'm a fan of the show. I was a fan from the beginning and so I just love the stories they tell and the characters they create.' As for the possibility of a Donna spinoff, Curtis insisted, 'Never, never.' Just hours before the Las Culturistas Culture Awards carpet, it was announced that Stephen Colbert's 'The Late Show' show was being cancelled. 'It's bad,' Curtis offered. 'I'm excited that I will get to be on his show in about two weeks. I've never been on his show. I really like him. He's smart and funny and a lovely human. It's awful.' The Las Culturistas Culture Awards air Aug. 5 on Bravo and next day on Peacock. See more photos from the awards below. Where Ana de Armas and Tom Cruise's Relationship Stands Amid Dating Rumors
THE RUNDOWN Actress Ana de Armas is officially single following a relationship with Manuel Anido Cuesta, the stepson of Cuba's president, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. They were first spotted sharing a kiss in November 2024. By May 2025, it was rumored they had split, but the breakup was confirmed by a source speaking to People this week. Amid her distance from Cuesta, rumors have followed de Armas as she preps for an upcoming film with actor Tom Cruise. The pair has been seen spending time together, leading to whispers of a romantic relationship. But the source indicated she and Cruise are simply working on the Doug Liman-directed thriller, Deeper. De Armas was also supposedly receiving advice from Cruise as she trained for her movie Ballerina, set in the John Wick universe. The movie is filled with stunts, which Cruise is famous for doing in his own films. 'Tom is crazy hardworking and she's very excited to work with him. She calls it an opportunity of a lifetime,' said the insider. 'Tom is an incredible mentor to Ana. She has nothing but amazing things to say about him.' This week, Cruise and de Armas were photographed together again, enjoying some sunshine on a yacht near the island of Menorca, just off the coast of Spain. The source emphasized that their connection is 'not romantic.' In February, a source told People something similar after they were seen having dinner together with their agents, during which they were supposedly 'discussing potential collaborations down the line' and 'appeared to have no romantic connection, just friends.' They have since been seen in London, after attending David Beckham's 50th birthday party, and then again in early May taking a walk through the park on de Armas's 37th birthday. In June, the actress told Variety that Cruise's support for Ballerina was 'unbelievable' and 'amazing.' 'It is very special that someone like him is supporting,' she shared. 'It is really special in general to have other actors and people supporting each other. We can do well all together.'

Prime Video just added this action movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg — but critics and fans disagree strongly on whether it's good
Prime Video just added one of the most divisive video game adaptations ever to its deep library of movies. I'm, of course, talking about "Uncharted," the action movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, based on the Naughty Dog video game series of the same name. But while Naughty Dog's most famous video game adaptation — "The Last of Us" — would arrive a year later to near-universal acclaim, this 2022 film was derided by critics, earning a putrid 41% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences strongly disagreed with the critics, rating it a "Verified Hot" 89% on the site. They also drove the film to an impressive $407.1 million at the box office. Having seen it in theaters myself, I have to say I side with the fans on this one. Here's what you need to know about 2022's "Uncharted" and why it's worth watching now that it's on Prime Video. "Uncharted" stars Holland as Nathan "Nate" Drake, a kleptomaniac bartender in New York whose brother, Sam (Rudy Pankow), left him behind in an orphanage as a kid and became a professional treasure hunter. But despite that abandonment, the two still stayed in contact via postcards Sam would send, until one day, they stopped. At the same time that is happening, one of Sam's associates, Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Wahlberg), comes to Nate with an offer to help him find the lost treasure of Ferdinand Magellan's crew, which Sam had been helping Sully hunt down. Try it free for 30 days. Wanting to find out what happened to Sam, Nate agrees to team up with Sully. That leads them to an auction where they cross paths with the dangerous Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and his chief lieutenant Braddock (Tati Gabrielle), and they only just manage to escape. So they head to Barcelona to recruit another one of Sully's contacts, fortune hunter Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali). Just from that synopsis, you can already tell that "Uncharted" isn't lacking for star power on its call sheet. The movie's cast is loaded with it. It's also pulling from some beloved source material. Like with "The Last of Us," fans really love the world that Naughty Dog built in the "Uncharted" game series and were definitely excited to see it on the big screen. I'm not sure this movie delivered on that last front, certainly not to the level that "The Last of Us" season 1 would the following year. But this movie is fun to watch, copying the template set by numerous fun action-adventure movies before it — the same movies the "Uncharted" games frankly ripped off for their premise. In their review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman called the movie "Raiders of the Lost National Treasure of the Fast & Furious Caribbean." While they meant that derogatorily, I think it's a spot-on assessment of why you'd want to watch this movie. Sure, it's a pale imitation of something like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (though I'm not sure it's that far off "National Treasure"), but not every movie can be "Raiders," something that every subsequent "Indiana Jones" movie has proven multiple times over. Sometimes, you just need a fun, dumb action movie with some stars. On that front, "Uncharted" delivers, and most fans who have seen it clearly agree. Stream "Uncharted" on Prime Video now Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023.
