
Why responsible AI is key for building better, brighter future for the world
The question isn't whether AI will transform our world - it's how we'll guide that transformation. Historically, humanity has taken a reactive approach to governing powerful technologies. The atomic bombing and destruction of two cities during the World War II ultimately paved the way for the formation of the United Nations - a response born from tragedy rather than foresight. Rather than repeating this pattern of waiting for catastrophe to drive action, we have an unprecedented opportunity with AI to be proactive. This is the right time for us to debate and establish a world governing council for responsible AI, creating international governance frameworks while embracing AI's transformative potential. This proactive approach represents a fundamental shift from reactive crisis management to thoughtful stewardship of emerging technology.
Frankly speaking, recent developments highlight both AI's transformative power and the importance of responsible deployment. Google's Gemini 2.0 and Anthropic's Claude 4 demonstrate unprecedented capabilities in autonomous planning and execution, opening new possibilities for scientific research and problem-solving. However, this rapid advancement brings important considerations that deserve our attention. Workforce transitions affecting 14 per cent of workers require thoughtful retraining programs and support systems. Meanwhile, AI's growing energy footprint presents ongoing opportunities for innovation in sustainable computing and renewable energy integration.
Artificial intelligence and ethical considerations
The responsible development of AI requires addressing important ethical considerations with the same rigor we apply to technology itself. Workforce transition support becomes crucial as industries evolve, creating opportunities for new skilled roles while ensuring affected workers receive retraining and meaningful career paths. Environmental stewardship is equally important. While major tech companies have seen significant emissions increase largely due to AI infrastructure expansion, this challenge drives innovation in green computing and renewable energy solutions. Additionally, securing personal data becomes paramount as AI systems become more sophisticated, with recent studies showing 77 per cent of businesses experiencing AI-related data challenges, highlighting the need for robust privacy frameworks that protect individuals while enabling beneficial AI applications.
Current data protection frameworks like Europe's GDPR provide excellent foundations, but AI's unique characteristics require evolved approaches. Unlike traditional data processing, AI systems integrate information in ways that make conventional privacy protections challenging to implement. This creates opportunities to develop next-generation privacy frameworks that address AI's permanent data integration while maintaining cross-border collaboration. The goal is to create comprehensive global standards that protect individual privacy while enabling AI's beneficial applications across borders.
Understanding how personal data interacts with AI systems empowers users to make informed choices about their digital interactions. When individuals interact with ChatGPT or similar systems, they contribute to model training, creating opportunities for both personalized assistance and privacy considerations. This presents an opportunity to develop AI systems that provide personalized benefits while maintaining strong privacy protections through advanced techniques like differential privacy and federated learning.
AI's extraordinary potential
However, the story doesn't end with challenges - it begins with extraordinary potential. AI's capacity for human advancement continues to inspire remarkable breakthroughs. NASA's Perseverance rover uses AI for autonomous Mars exploration, opening new frontiers for space discovery. AI-powered stroke detection systems prove twice as accurate as traditional methods, saving lives through early intervention. The AI healthcare market has grown to over $32 billion, with applications reducing emergency room wait times and accelerating drug discovery for previously incurable diseases. These beneficial applications - from climate monitoring to space exploration - demonstrate AI's extraordinary capacity to address humanity's greatest challenges.
The 57 countries that signed the Paris Declaration on AI governance last year recognize this tremendous opportunity. Building on this foundation, we can establish a global governing body that fosters international cooperation while ensuring AI development serves human flourishing. Like international frameworks for nuclear technology that enable both peaceful energy production and prevent harmful applications, AI governance can maximize benefits while addressing potential risks through shared standards and collaborative oversight.
No doubt, the world needs responsible AI that can enhance our quality of life in all spheres and spaces. And the opportunity before us is clear: proactive governance now can unlock AI's full potential for a better tomorrow. That's the bottom line.

India pushes Global South priorities in Brics talks with Brazil, Russia
New Delhi: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reaffirmed India's commitment to advancing Global South priorities, deepening strategic ties, and fostering greater cooperation within the Brics grouping. Sitharaman held bilateral discussions with her Brazilian and Russian counterparts on the sidelines of the Brics finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Rio de Janeiro, the ministry of finance said in a post on X on Sunday. In her meeting with Fernando Haddad, minister of finance of Brazil, Sitharaman 'endorsed Brazil's leadership during its Brics chairship and reiterated India's support for the group's expansion and efforts toward a multipolar global order,' according to the post. 'The two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, including, South-South cooperation, amplifying the voice of the Global South, #COP30 and climate finance issues, and engagement in regional and global forums such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, WTO (World Trade Organization) and IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa Dialogue Forum),' it added. India supports the agenda and priorities set by Brazil, and hopes to carry forward the outcome-oriented cooperation when India takes over the chairship in January 2026, said the Indian finance minister on X. India and Brazil, as strategic partners, share warm and cordial ties spanning multiple sectors, and are cooperating closely to further strengthen the strategic partnership, Sitharaman said. Sitharaman also met Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov. The two leaders discussed India-Russia's long-standing partnership and Sitharman also expressed gratitude for the support extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin after the Pahalgam terror attack, the finance ministry said. 'The Union Finance Minister observed that India and Russia enjoy exemplary levels of mutual trust and understanding and our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains resilient and steadfast,' it added. Meanwhile, Sitharaman also congratulated Russia for its successful chairship of the Brics in 2024. India will continue to leverage the Brics platform to build South-South cooperation in areas of common interest, she said. 'The two sides also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in the financial sector, along with matters related to NDB,' the finance ministry said. The NDB, formerly the BRICS Development Bank, was established in 2014 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to mobilize funding for infrastructure and sustainable development projects. Headquartered in Shanghai, it serves as a credible alternative to Western-led institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Digital rules? Not EU's way
Digital Rules? Not EU's Way Madrid: In 2024, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) released a draft ex-ante digital competition law, following the lead of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). But does India need a new law that is an inspiration from a dubious DMA or is existing competition law enough?India's Competition Act 2002-especially in the wake of significant amendments made in 2023-offers a flexible and comprehensive framework to address anticompetitive conduct in the digital economy. It also includes sections that cover such core digital concerns as deep discounting, bundling, self-preferencing, exclusive tie-ups and the misuse of data by dominant platforms- without automatically prejudging whether such conduct is anti-competitive. CCI has also demonstrated that it can apply these provisions, as it did when it imposed penalties on Google for anticompetitive conduct in the Android ecosystem and Play Store policies. More recently, Meta and WhatsApp were fined for unfair data-sharing conditions imposed on users. CCI's scrutiny of MakeMyTrip, Flipkart and Uber demonstrates its ability to engage with platform-specific issues under existing legal mandate. While some jurisdictions have opted for 'ex-ante' digital competition laws-such as DMA-India would be wise to avoid this path. Ex-ante regimes often rely on absolute prohibitions and structural presumptions, which may inadvertently suppress innovative or pro-competitive conduct because it involves scale or the blueprint for many ex-ante digital competition rules, has been criticised by competition experts like OECD's Frederic Jenny for rigidity and potential to hinder innovation in fast-moving markets. Indeed, DMA has produced dubious outcomes in the has taken note. The draft Digital Competition Bill (DCB) 2024 proposed ex-ante obligations for 'systemically significant digital enterprises', drawing inspiration from foreign frameworks like DMA. But it was met with concern from industry and legal experts, who warned that such sweeping, pre-emptive rules risked stifling innovation and overregulating a still-developing digital economy. That proposal was put on the backburner, a prudent pause that underscores the need to pursue a tailored, evidence-based approach rather than adopt a one-size-fits-all regulatory model. Indeed, India's experience offers an alternative. In the landmark v. Google case, CCI displayed regulatory restraint, carefully weighing the need to preserve innovation. That decision reflected a more sophisticated understanding of digital markets, where conduct must be judged in context, rather than employing broad regulatory prohibitions that ignore efficiencies and procompetitive benefits. Furthermore, CCI has shown flexibility in defining relevant markets in digital cases, such as in Snapdeal and Meru v. Uber, where evolving business models required novel interpretations. Despite effectiveness of this legal framework, enforcement delays remain a significant concern. In CCI v. SAIL case, the Supreme Court highlighted the need for time-bound proceedings to ensure meaningful remedies and deterrence. The ability to enforce the law swiftly and decisively is what will ultimately determine the regime's than replicating foreign models, India should prioritise improving how its current system functions. This means faster case resolution, better resources for CCI and development of sector-specific guidelines that retain flexibility while offering clarity. Moreover, continuous training and upskilling of enforcement personnel are essential. That's why the proposed Digital Markets and Data Unit within CCI is a welcome development, as it promises to bring much-needed technical expertise and sector-specific knowledge to bear on increasingly complex pace of technological change in the digital economy exceeds the ability of prescriptive rules to remain relevant. A principles-based, evidence-driven regulatory approach-such as the one embodied in the Competition Act-is far better suited to this 2023 amendments bolstered this framework by introducing a deal value threshold for merger scrutiny, a voluntary settlement and commitment mechanism, and significantly higher penalties. Together, these amendments serve to equip CCI with modern tools to regulate proactively without becoming focus should now shift to building institutional capacity, streamlining procedures and ensuring timely enforcement. These improvements will ensure that Indian markets remain healthy, efficient and a global climate of regulatory overreach, India's approach should continue to remain principled and pragmatic: grounded in a refusal to legislate prematurely and a commitment to strengthen an already sound framework rooted in economic analysis that has served it well across sectors as varied as telecom, cement, pharmaceuticals and aviation. GitHub CEO to engineers: 'Smartest' companies will hire more software engineers, not less as…
GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke says the companies that best leverage artificial intelligence won't use it to replace human developers, but instead will dramatically increase their engineering hiring to capitalize on AI-enhanced productivity gains. "The companies that are the smartest are going to hire more developers," Dohmke said in a recent podcast interview. "Because if you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x."
