Anwar engages Muslim community in Rome

ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is on a three-day working visit to Italy, took the opportunity to meet with members of the Muslim community here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, he held discussions with Comunita Religiosa Islamica Italiana (COREIS) vice-president Yahya Pallavicini and Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy-Grand Mosque of Rome secretary-general Abdellah Redouane.
Anwar said the session provided a platform to exchange views on strengthening the development of the ummah, including addressing Islamophobia through wisdom and diplomacy.
"I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to promoting Islam that upholds moderation, tolerance and harmony through education, dakwah and international collaboration, with the Muslim community in Italy," he said after the meeting.
As a symbol of goodwill and the sharing of knowledge, Anwar also presented contributions to the Muslim community in Rome, including a special edition of the Quran and 10 Italian-translated copies.
Italy is home to an estimated 2.7 million Muslims.
Meanwhile, Anwar expressed his appreciation to translator Andrea Fais and publisher Stefano Bonilauri for their efforts in translating his book "The Asian Renaissance" into Italian.
"This work, published more than two decades ago, presents a broad vision of the revival of the Asian civilisation through the values of knowledge, culture, openness and justice, as a response to global imbalances and the dominance of Western narratives.
"I deeply appreciate the dedication of these Italian scholars in translating the book, which allows key ideas on democracy and values-driven development to be widely shared and understood across the international community," he said.
Anwar also said the initiative was more than just a translation effort — it served as a bridge for thought and understanding between East and West in a divided global landscape.
"May this work continue to inspire efforts to champion the universal values of humanity, knowledge and justice," he added.

Malaysia Stresses Equity In Global Health, Climate At BRICS Summit

From Arul Rajoo Durar Raj RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia believes that vaccine access, strong public health systems and the regulation of global medical supply chains are central to both national stability and international security. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that when governments divert limited resources from essential services such as healthcare and clean water to service historical debts, financial systems designed to foster development instead hinder progress. 'Let us begin with a hard truth. In too much of the world, life expectancy remains shaped not by biology, but by income. 'The fact that a child's chance of surviving past the age of five is still largely determined by GDP per capita represents a failure for us all,' he said during his intervention at the 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health' session of the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit here today. Malaysia, he said, welcomes the launch of the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases. 'It reflects a clear understanding that disease cannot be meaningfully addressed without tackling the conditions that entrench it,' said Anwar. The premier voiced Malaysia's support for deeper collaboration between BRICS and ASEAN to strengthen surveillance, accelerate knowledge transfer, and build resilience across borders. He also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to a credible and just low-carbon transition, highlighting the country's pledge to reduce emissions intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Singapore's longest-serving mufti Syed Isa Mohamed passes away on Monday (July 7) at the age of 87

SINGAPORE, July 7 (Bernama): Singapore's longest-serving mufti, Syed Isa Mohamed, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. In a media statement, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) said his passing is a great loss to the Singapore Muslim community and the nation. "MUIS is deeply saddened by the passing. His unwavering commitment and tireless efforts to promote a confident and progressive Muslim community have left a lasting impact on Singapore and beyond,' the statement read. Syed Isa served as Mufti of Singapore from 1972 to 2010. During his tenure, Syed Isa oversaw the establishment of many key institutions that shaped the religious life of the community. This included the establishment of a system for determining the Islamic calendar, development of the institution of zakat (alms) collection and disbursement, social development programmes for the poor and needy, and the Mosque Building Fund. He also played a vital role in the management and growth of wakaf (voluntary charitable endowment) properties and was instrumental in setting up an internationally credible and reliable halal certification system. Syed Isa also chaired the Fatwa Committee that provided solutions to complex and contentious issues, and was a key advocate of inter-religious harmony. He served as a council member of the Inter-Religious Organisation of Singapore (IRO) in 1975 and became its president in 1993. From 1992 to 2010, he was also a member of the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony. For his service, Syed Isa was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 1982 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2009. He also received the IRO Lifetime Award for his efforts in strengthening interfaith relations and was conferred the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal in 2011. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong paid tribute to Syed Isa's decades of service to the Malay/Muslim community. "His leadership helped shape key institutions, strengthened religious administration, and supported the growth and development of our Malay/Muslim community. "He leaves behind a lasting legacy through the generations of leaders and scholars he mentored,' Wong said in a condolence message to Syed Isa's family on Facebook. - Bernama
