Bentley driving drugs kingpin jailed for at least six years after using his property empire as cover to run string of cannabis farms across Britain

A drugs kingpin who ran a network of cannabis farms across the UK making millions while posing as a Bentley-driving property developer has been jailed. Roman Le, 38, drove the £225,000 Bentley Continental between the eight farms he supervised in the Midlands, northwest and north Lincolnshire. He would install scaffolding around the buildings to make it appear that work was taking place. But behind the façade, his lieutenants were busy inside the properties manufacturing millions of pounds worth of cannabis. As well as the eight farms in residential and commercial properties, Le also ran a storage facility housing both equipment and harvested cannabis. He established cannabis factories across the Midlands, North West and north Lincolnshire including in a disused nightclub in Coventry, a former public house in Birmingham, and an old hotel in Lancashire. National Crime Agency investigators placed the gang under surveillance, watching as Le parked his Bentley outside the former Big Bamboo nightclub in Coventry before heading inside. When the site was later raided, police found 1,500 cannabis plants worth more than £1 million spread across three floors. On another occasion they witnessed the gang's operations manager Yihao Feng, 29, driving away in his Maserati sports car after visiting the Old Wellington Hotel in Clayton-le-Moors, which was later found to have more than 300 plants growing inside. Many of the farms were staffed by Vietnamese or Albanian illegal migrants. When the gang were arrested Feng pleaded guilty to conspiring to produce cannabis. Another associate, David Qayumi, 36, who posed as a businessman to help Le rent or buy the properties, also admitted his involvement. But Le denied the charge, claiming he was a legitimate businessman who had no knowledge that the properties were being used for cannabis. Following an eight-day trial at Birmingham Crown Court, he was convicted on June 5 of conspiring to produce cannabis. On 4 July Feng and Qayumi were handed prison sentences totalling six-and-a-half years. And Le has been given six years and two months at the same court. NCA Senior Investigating Officer Paul Boniface said: 'The cannabis factories operated by Roman Le's gang produced drugs worth millions, often staffed by migrants who had arrived here illegally and were being forced to work to pay off their debt to people smugglers. 'He claimed to be a legitimate businessman, but in reality he was lining his own pockets off the back of the exploitation of others less fortunate than him. 'Working with policing partners we were able to target and dismantle this organised criminal operation, and those involved are now rightfully behind bars. 'Gangs like this are helping fuel an industry that sees people transported into the UK in life-threatening ways in boats or lorries, which is why taking action against them is so important for the NCA.'

Woman's death in Bakersfield house fire ruled an accident

A woman's death in a house fire in Nottingham was accidental, a coroner has Tunstall, 62, died at her home in Ashworth Close, Bakersfield, after a fire broke out at about 21:35 BST on Friday 7 June 2024.A joint police and fire investigation had last year ruled the fire was not suspicious and "attributed to smoking".And at Nottingham Coroner's Court on Wednesday, assistant coroner Sarah Wood concluded the death was accidental. Following the inquest, fire investigator Chris Navin offered condolences to Ms Tunstall's family and said the fire was a "reminder" of the risks of smoking, adding: "We recommend that if anyone chooses to smoke to do so outside, however, this is not always possible to achieve."If you have to smoke inside, smoking in bed or whilst tired isn't advised, as there is always an enhanced risk of injury."

London's crime epidemic proves Donald Trump was right about Sadiq Khan

These are truly astonishing figures. They show that parts of London under Khan's mayoralty have descended to vicious lawlessness – and this poses a fundamental threat to Londoners, British citizens who visit for various reasons, and foreign tourists who carry romanticised visions of our capital which are now far divorced from reality. There is arguably a public safety emergency in London, with the capital finding itself in a knife crime, robbery, and street theft epidemic under a mayor who was recently awarded a knighthood for 'political and public service'. Indeed, three in five of the knife crimes committed in the capital were robberies – with over 81,000 mobile phones stolen in robberies and thefts last year. What is especially worrying is the scale to which those behind such crimes escape from receiving the punishments they deserve. An uncomfortable number of serial offenders are getting away with receiving custodial sentences. 'Hyper-prolific offenders' – those with more than 45 previous convictions – were sent to prison on less than half of all occasions (45.5 per cent to be exact) on conviction for an indictable or either-way offence. This is not remotely acceptable. One of the key recommendations of the Policy Exchange report calls for Scotland Yard to adopt an enhanced 'zero tolerance' strategy in the top 20 knife crime hotspots of London – where Met police officers would be 'explicitly tasked' to conduct 'very high volumes' of stop and searches. This includes placing in the region of 100 frontline officers on patrol in the vicinity of Oxford Circus and Regent Street during peak times. While some have caricatured stop-and-search as a policing instrument of institutional racism, the depressing fact is that much of the knife crime in London is among younger black males – disproportionately from lone-parent households and sucked into subcultures which glorify violence and hyper-materialism.
