Mary, Queen of Scots review – trouser suits and relentless tension in Musgrave's bleak opera
It's a bleak, uncompromising piece, in many ways. Musgrave is having none of the still prevalent Romantic view of Mary as the passionate martyr of Fotheringhay, focusing instead on her years in Scotland between 1561 and her abdication in 1567, and probing her relationships with the three men who jostled to control her: her illegitimate half-brother James, a fierce Protestant, whose fixation with his sister, it is implied, may have been incestuous; Henry Darnley, her profligate second husband; and Bothwell, the Catholic mercenary, whose ostensible loyalty masks a tendency to coercion and sexual violence.
The score has a certain unyielding hardness of edge. Musgrave is good on plots and counter-plots, as alliances are formed and dissolved in ballrooms, and omnipresent slithering woodwind suggest there is no firm ground anywhere. Arguably the finest scene in the entire work, relentless in its tension, comes when the earls of Ruthven (Ronald Samm) and Morton (Jolyon Loy) conspire with Darnley (Rupert Charlesworth) to murder Riccio (Barnaby Rea). Elsewhere, much of the drama is advanced in a mixture of recitative and arioso, with vocal lines turning notably angular at moments of crisis. Lyrical passages are beautiful but rare, and a lovely chorus marks the arrival of Mary in Scotland. Darnley later woos her to music at once impressionistic and exquisitely insubstantial.
Laing, meanwhile, reimagines the piece in terms of 20th-century sectarianism. Protestants and Catholics, fanatics alike, are effectively indistinguishable from each other until allegiances are declared, but are also tacitly united by suspicion when Heidi Stober's Mary arrives, elegant yet out of place in a couture trouser suit. It's a telling idea, but can obscure our awareness of the underlying power dynamics: in particular, Mary's insistence on a divine right to absolute monarchy doesn't carry as much weight here as it should.
Sung and acted with blazing conviction across the board, though, the performance itself is tremendous. The title role lies high, and Stober is all thrilling top notes and terrific moments of defiance or self-assertion. Alex Otterburn makes a charismatic, lethally persuasive James. You really understand Mary's initial attraction to Charlesworth's elegantly sung if vapid Darnley, and the dissipation and degradation of his later scenes are disquietingly vivid. John Findon's Bothwell masks steely brutality beneath the trappings of heldentenor heroism, while Rea makes a sonorous, unusually sympathetic Riccio. Carneiro, meanwhile, drives it all forwards with inexorable momentum, and the playing and choral singing are both superb.
It's not always an easy work to like, but it's powerfully done.

Conor McGregor and fiancée Dee Devlin look loved up as they enjoy a romantic child free dinner date during their lavish holiday - amid 'cheating' scandal and 'nudes' claims
Conor McGregor and his fiancée Dee Devlin looked as loved-up as ever as they enjoyed a romantic child free dinner date during their lavish yacht holiday in Sardinia, despite his alleged cheating scandal. The Irish MMA fighter, 37, was embroiled in controversy over the weekend when he was photographed kissing a mystery brunette woman on a beach in Fort Lauderdale. With his partner Dee - whom he shares four children with and has been engaged to since 2020 - nowhere in sight, questions were raised about their relationship. Rapper Azealia Banks then added to the furore as she took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to accuse Conor of sexual harassment. On Monday, Azealia, 34, shared nude photos which purported to show Conor, which she claimed he sent to her unprompted. Amid the backlash, Conor and Dee have shrugged off the criticism, continuing to display their affection for each other - and Conor's latest Instagram post on Saturday showed they're very much still going strong. In the holiday carousel, the couple were all smiles as they headed to shore for a romantic dinner for two. Dee looked radiant in a flowing floral-print dress, while Conor wore a satin, Pucci-inspired shirt paired with white trousers. The pair looked happier than ever as he shared a series of sweet selfies from their night together. He kept the caption simple, adding just a red heart emoji. The couple have been enjoying time in Sardinia together to celebrate Conor's 37th birthday - which was on July 14. Dee shared a gushing tribute to Conor on the day and they have both been posting loved-up content to social media in the days since while enjoying their trip. Their united display comes after concerns when Conor was seen smooching a mystery brunette in full view of fellow beachgoers in Fort Lauderdale. Conor was spotted enjoying a cold beverage while the woman, who was dressed in a leopard print bikini, shared his sun lounger. The pair chatted away in the shade as the sportsman cosied up to her by wrapping his arm around her back. Dee - with whom he shares children, daughter Croia, five, and sons Conor Jr, eight, Rian, three and Mack, 19 months, with - was nowhere in sight. However, Dee brushed off the scandal as she simply posted a loving tribute to Conor to her Instagram page on Monday. Dee shared a post from a fan account on her Instagram story which read: 'Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile.' Just hours later, Azealia set the internet ablaze after sharing alleged nude photos of Conor that she claims the disgraced star sent unprompted. She accused Conor of sexual harassment when she shared nude photographs purporting to show the MMA star. 'How you gonna send a b**** a some crooked d*** pics then threaten her not to tell,' she wrote alongside the screenshots. '@TheNotoriousMMA n**** do you know who the f*** I am? This is HARAM.' Azealia continued: 'Like how are you really going to sexually harrass me with the potato farmer d*** then threaten me not to tell???? Honey…… ain't u trying to be the president of Ireland what is it giving fam? Use some f***ing sunscreen damn.' As well as the alleged nude selfies, the screenshots also showed a message from what purported to be Conor's account reading: 'Don't be a rat cos all rats get caught.' Alongside one image which seemingly shows his manhood strapped to a dumbbell, the Irish fighter apparently wrote: 'Lifting weights.' Azealia shared another screenshot of the alleged pictures suddenly being 'hidden' on X because she does not follow Conor's account. Although it is unclear if he had anything to do with that alleged change, she commented: 'The motherf***er woke up early LOL.' reached out to the last-known attorneys on record for Conor, his agent and Azealia's agent for comment at the time. It is the latest embarrassment to hit the sportsman's relationship with his partner Dee, who was ever-present by his side throughout his sexual assault court case last year. In 2024, Conor lost a civil case as jurors at the High Court in Dublin found him liable of raping Nikita Hand, 35, in a Dublin hotel on December 9, 2018, with the judge awarding Hand €250,000 in damages. But despite the verdict, Dee emphatically made it clear that she intended to back Conor - attacking Nikita in a series of posts on Instagram at the time. In the posts, she wrote: 'Conor and I dealt with these issues privately many years ago, as should be done in a relationship and we have come out stronger than ever. 'We have four beautiful children now whose smiling faces and happy hearts are a testament to who he is and who we are!' The pair have been together for 15 years and got engaged in August 2020 after Conor proposed while they were celebrating his birthday. The couple met as teenagers at a nightclub in 2008 and Dee has been a key player in the MMA star's story, supporting him when he was jobless and focused on making it as a professional fighter.

‘Absolutely not, immediately no' people cry as man proposes in Nando's with the big question written in mayonnaise
A MAN has been slated for his unconventional wedding proposal, after popping the big question to his beau by writing it out in mayonnaise. We all dream of a romantic proposal, with some choosing to take their partner to an exotic location, or share an intimate moment at home. 2 However, one man decided to take a very unique approach to popping the question, after taking his girlfriend out to their local Nando's. Taking to TikTok, Nando's waiter Mal shared a snap of the proposal, which he recorded whilst serving the couple. "POV: When he does the bare minimum proposal at Nando's", Mal said. In the video, Mal can be seen carrying a plate of mayonnaise over to the couple. Written in curly mayo writing is the misspelt phrase: "Will you mary me?" Mal then gave the woman at the table the ring, whilst her partner can be seen smiling and not saying a word, assumedly too shy to pop the question himself. He doesn't stand up, or even get down on one knee, with Mal revealing that his legs "curled round that chair." The waiter said that the woman was left extremely perplexed by the unique proposal, and was unsure how to respond. He said that she sat confused for 10 minutes, before finally saying yes to the proposal. However, he added that they didn't even kiss after agreeing to spend the rest of their lives together, and instead just chose to hug. Love Island stars slam Dejon over 'worst exclusive proposal in show history' "He could have put way more thought into it", Mal critiqued, adding that the man had even turned up late to the proposal. The video, posted to Mal's TikTok account (@micmanmal5), has quickly gone viral, racking up 1.2 million views in just 24 hours. TikTok users raced to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many left unimpressed. One person said: "It literally doesn't cost a thing to get down on one knee and propose. How to ace a proposal Thinking of proposing? Follow this checklist by Fabulous' Deputy Editor Josie Griffiths to ensure a yes… Time it right - the average Brit waits between 18 months and two years to get engaged. But you might feel ready after six months, or decide to wait five plus years to pop the question. Only you truly know when the time's right, and this isn't a decision you want to rush. Falling in love might feel amazing but of course most relationships DON'T end in marriage - and this is for good reason… Pay attention - hopefully you haven't reached the point yet of your frustrated partner leaving their laptop open with 'hints' for rings they like. Ideally you'll want the ring to be a secret, but also something they'd happily wear - and for the rest of their life, so just a TEENY bit of pressure here. You need to be paying attention to any comments your partner makes about other people's rings, what they do and don't like, and what's most important to them - size, clarity, specific details. If you're really unsure, or if your partner hates surprises, it's best to propose with a dummy and then buy the real thing together. Family matters - tradition dictates that you ask the dad's permission for his daughter's hand in marriage, but it's not so straightforward nowadays. Maybe your partner's closer to their step-dad, or wants her mum to walk her down the aisle, in which case you'd be better off chatting to them. Maybe they'd find it weird if you went to their parents first, in which case you could ditch the whole thing. Or perhaps they're closer to their friends and the best idea would be letting your partner's best mate pick the ring. These things do matter and could come back to bite you if handled in the wrong way. Plan the setting - does your partner dread being centre of attention, or are they someone who'd be gutted if you proposed at home, berating you forever for a lack of 'effort'? Plan the place for your perfect proposal - how busy it'll be, whether you'll be able to get a good pic there, and other logistics around it. A proposal at the top of a mountain might sound good in theory but your girlfriend might not actually appreciate it when there's sweat dripping down her forehead and she's not wearing the cute dress she'd imagined for the pictures. Personally, I can't think of anything worse than a public proposal where everyone's waiting to hear your answer - in a group of friends, the middle of a restaurant or with an announcement at an event. So bear all of this in mind and remember, it's meant to be about what THEY want, not you. "You can do it in Nandos, sure, but at least get down on one knee and tell her why you want to marry her." A second person said: "Immediately, no. "The least he could do is stand up." A third said: "Absolutely not." A fourth added: "Gonna be honest here. I would pass him."

What is wrong with Mary's hand in Emmerdale? Mystery bandage sparks concern
Emmerdale's Mary Goskirk appeared on screen on the ITV soap on Friday night with a bandage across her hand and wrist, sparking concern with characters about her injury Mary Goskirk on Emmerdale, played by actress Louise Jameson, sparked concern on Friday night after appearing onscreen for the first time in a while. As she appeared, it was noticeable that she had a bandage wrapped around her hand and lower arm. Mary kept holding her hand up and was fiddling with the bandage, not really able to use the hand while serving behind the bar of The Woolpack. It was while serving customer Jacob Gallagher that he got concerned for the character. The medical student asked Mary what had happened to her hand, and how she had injured herself. Mary explained that she'd fallen down the last couple of steps of the staircase at home, no doubt hitting or landing on the arm. She didn't say specially what the injury was or if it was broken or sprained. What she did say though was that she was fine after the fall, and would need a few weeks of rest before she could get the bandages off. Jacob appeared alarmed though, offering to take a look at the injury. READ MORE: Emmerdale John Sugden clues tease villain will finally be exposed very soon Mary downplayed it all though and declined his offer saying it was not necessary. She said it was "alright" and just needed a few weeks to heal, before thanking him. She seemed keen to brush it under the carpet while it was clear Jacob was worried. It wasn't made clear if Mary went to hospital or a doctor to get it checked out, or if she bandaged it up herself. It's likely nothing to worry about and not part of a storyline, but fans will no doubt be questioning the random scene. Perhaps actress Louise sustained an injury away from the show and it was written into the episode. This often happens, and just recently on Coronation Street Kit Green actor Jacob Roberts had surgery on his leg and it was seemingly written into the show. There have been many other instances over the years where an injury or something else is written in. Not too long ago recently murdered character Nate Robinson was shown wearing a sling on his arm after an injury, while it was actually linked to a real-life injury or operation. Mary's scenes in the pub saw the moment Jacob Gallagher and Sarah Sugden's engagement was announced. Mary was quick to congratulate the couple, while Victoria Sugden was surprised by her ex and her niece's big news. Victoria admitted she was stunned given Sarah was recently with Kammy and they'd not been back together long, leading to Jacob saying it felt right as he knew he was with the right person.
