Musketeers in search of securing home ice advantage in Clark Cup Playoffs
The Musketeers returned home from a successful four-game road stand that helped the Green and Gold not only climb the standings, but lock up a playoff spot in the process.
Sioux City was the fourth team to lock up a Clark Cup Playoff spot and after Tri-City and Fargo were able to secure the last two slots, the Western Conference playoff bunch is already spoken for.
With Lincoln and Sioux Falls holding a wide margin in the top two spots, which come with first round byes, Sioux City sits in fourth – the last spot that comes with home ice advanctange in the first round of the playoffs.
The Muskies put together five wins in a row, with four of those coming on the road in victories against Omaha, Fargo, and Chicago. The win streak was sparked by Sioux City's home victory against the Omaha Lancers back on March 15th.
During the stretch, Sioux City has scored five or more goals in each of its wins, boosting its season total to 210. The Muskies' goal total is tied for fifth-best in the USHL.
A big part of the recent success is courtesy of Giacomo Martino. The Northeastern commit tallied 13 points in his last five games, including a hat trick on Sunday at Chicago.
Even with plenty of momentum and a playoff spot locked upm the team remains in search for more.
'It's just pretty much win every game, we really want that home ice. We love the fans here in Sioux City and it's definitely a big advantage if we get that home ice,' Sioux City defenseman Liam Hupka said.
'It's that time of year, right? So obviously in that stretch, we're able to clinch a playoff spot and now we're still fighting to try to get home ice. So five regular season games left and the final three here at the Tyson. So, we're looking forward to them and we need a few more points in we want ot be able to host in the first round of the playoffs, which is kind of our next goal,' Kersner added.
'Home ice advantage in the playoffs means a lot. The fans over here get crazy. I remember from last year and just that travel is really brutal. So, hopefully we could finish strong these last couple of games and then get home ice for the playoffs,' Martino mentioned.
'Play every one like its our last and get some more wins and make sure we get that home ice and bring the energy in the playoffs,' Sioux City forward Gavin Garry highlighted.
Sioux Ciy will take on three different opponents in three days, kicking off the slate on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against a Dubuque team that sits in second place in the Eastern Conference.
The Musketeers follow that game up on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. with another Eastern Conference opponent in Cedar Rapids. Sioux City scored a season-high eight goals in its road win against the Roughriders in January.
Sioux City's final regular season home game falls on Sunday against a Tri-City Storm team that is chasing the Musketeers in the standings, sitting just seven pounts behind Sioux City. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.

Deandre Ayton displayed concerning behavior with the Trail Blazers
A considerable number of people are feeling bullish about Deandre Ayton coming to the Los Angeles Lakers. He reportedly agreed to sign with the team for two years and $16.6 million, and he will give them their first legitimate true starting center in years. While he is an outstanding rim-running lob threat, as well as a productive rebounder, he hasn't been a rim protector in his seven seasons in the NBA. Plenty have also criticized his overall defense and accused him of not caring enough about his play on that end of the floor. Then there is the matter of his attitude over the past couple of seasons as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. Jason Quick of The Athletic wrote a revealing piece that detailed how concerning Ayton's behavior was and how it annoyed Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. "See, the Blazers could live with Ayton missing shots or his man scoring on him," Quick wrote. "They could even live with him being limited by injuries to 55 and 40 games in his two seasons in Portland. "But in the end, they couldn't live with his bad ways. The tardiness to team flights and practices, according to a team source. The skipping of rehabilitation appointments. Fans saw him slam chairs when he was taken out of games. And a team source said there were tantrums in the locker room when he was sidelined for poor effort." Even worse, when Ayton first came to Portland two summers ago, he hyped himself up big time and failed to live up to his own hype. "In his first news conference in Portland, he referred to himself as 'Domin-Ayton.' During the 95 times he played in Portland, he was maybe dominant in a handful of games. He once said he has nothing to prove because 'I'm a max (contract) player and I'll continue to be a max player.' But in both Phoenix and Portland, he chaffed his coaches with inconsistent effort. In Game 7 of the 2022 Western Conference semifinals, Suns coach Monty Williams benched him in the second half, prompting a heated argument. In a December game against Utah in Portland, Billups called a timeout two minutes into the second half and benched Ayton for the rest of the game. "After the 141-99 loss to the [Utah] Jazz, in which Ayton was minus-29 in his 17 minutes, Billups said, 'I didn't like his spirit in the game.'" Portland hasn't exactly been in a winning situation over the last two years, so one has to wonder if part of Ayton's unacceptable behavior had to do with being in that type of situation. When he was with the Phoenix Suns for the first five years of his pro career, he played well and put up better numbers. In fact, during the 2019-20 season, he averaged a decent 1.5 blocks a game, albeit in 38 contests. He was a major contributor to the Suns' trip to the 2021 NBA Finals, and he averaged 15.8 points, 11.8 boards and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting a sizzling 65.8% from the field. The hope is that with a winning team such as the Lakers and alongside LeBron James and Luka Doncic, Ayton, the former No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, will be on his best behavior and play closer to the top of his potential.

LA (2-13-6), the defending MLS Cup champion, won for the first time since it beat Real Salt Lake 2-0 on May 31 to snap a 16-game winless streak to open the season. The Galaxy went into the game with 13 points, fewest in all of MLS. The Whitecaps (11-4-5) have lost three of their last four. Vancouver is second in the Western Conference with 38 points, behind San Diego (39). Edwin Cerrillo flicked a shot from 30 yards outs that was deflected by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka and Nascimento put away the rebound with a first-touch finish to open the scoring in the second minute. Paintsil made it 2-0 in the 60th. Gabriel Pec played an long arcing ball to the top of the penalty box, where Marco Reus tapped a first-touch pass to a wide-open Paintsil, who calmly flicked a shot inside the back post from the left side of the area. Paintsil converted from the penalty spot in the 77th minute for his first career multi-goal game.
