Rotherham is on track for a major glow-up - with a whopping £166million Gateway Station set to put the town back on the UK's rail map.
South Yorkshire bigwigs are set to sign off another £11.35million later this month to push the game-changing project into its next phase, bringing swanky design plans and fresh procurement moves.
Network Rail reckon the brand-new four-platform station could cost between £133m and £166m, but locals say it's worth every penny to bring mainline trains back to the borough after half a century.
The huge scheme will see a modern integrated rail and tram-train stop built at Forge Way, Parkgate - promising to supercharge Rotherham's regional and national links and spark a brand-new Innovation Campus right next door.
SYMCA bosses have hailed the Rotherham Gateway scheme as 'the most significant growth and regeneration opportunity across the North of England'.
The SYMCA report added: ""At the heart of these plans is the proposal to radically enhance the connectivity of this site, not only within the borough and South Yorkshire, but to and from other centres of advanced manufacturing, international gateways and London with the development of a new Rotherham Gateway Station."
Rotherham Council is leading the charge, having already secured £10million through the Town Deal and tapped into a further £1million from SYMCA's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement to put together a bold Station Masterplan and snap up key land.
The £166million project - which includes a brand-new mainline station and tram-train stop at Parkgate - is still awaiting full government backing, as it's currently classed as a Department for Transport 'retained scheme'.
Pencilled in for late 2030, it promises quicker trains to Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds - and faster links to the North West, Midlands, North East, plus ports and airports.
But that's not all. The whole area is set to boom with over 355,000 sq ft of cutting-edge manufacturing and business space, alongside around 250 new homes - adding to the 2,500 already planned nearby at Bassingthorpe Farm.

Green thumbs will be pleased too, with 100,000 sq ft earmarked for parks and green spaces, plus 32,000 sq ft of public hangout spots.
Plus, about 200 parking spots are in the plans - and no extra roadworks are expected beyond access upgrades.
Improvements will also be made to walking and cycling routes to make it easier for people to reach the station on foot or by bike.
The funding pot is still up in the air, with authorities hunting for cash from new transport grants - but nothing's nailed down yet, meaning land buys and next steps are a bit of a gamble.

The main station will set back around £72 million - soaring to £94 million when factoring in risks and inflation.
The tram-train stop adds nearly £28 million (or £40 million with extras), and a four-platform build could push the total to over £127 million.
With government plans for Northern Powerhouse Rail and a decade-long infrastructure strategy due soon, Rotherham's future looks on track — if the money lines up.
According to the BBC, when Rotherham Gateway Station opens, it will reintroduce mainline trains to Rotherham for the first time since the 1980s.

Prince William: Tackling homelessness 'complex and unpredictable'
Prince William has acknowledged the "complex and unpredictable" challenge that still lies ahead for those helping him tackle homelessness, two years since he launched his ambitious Homewards project. In a letter to the local coalition groups that were formed in six locations across the UK, the Prince of Wales thanked them for joining his mission to "demonstrate that it is possible to make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated". Signing off with the message "Keep going!" William explains how he believes the initiative has already started to "shift the dial" on the "mammoth challenge". "There are now people who are no longer experiencing homelessness thanks to your tremendous efforts," he wrote. Since the five-year programme was launched in 2023, more than 100 initiatives have started across six locations around the UK, and some 300 homes - a mixture of empty accommodation, private rentals and new builds - are forecast to be delivered through Homewards' Innovative Housing Projects. 2:23 In February, William unveiled a new partnership with high street bank Lloyds Banking Group, which has made £50m available to organisations tackling homelessness. Nearly £3m has also been secured for Homewards locations from partners and coalition members. Each 'local coalition group' has been working to identify solutions to specific groups at risk of homelessness in their area, such as single people and under-25s in Aberdeen, lone parents in temporary accommodation in Lambeth and families and women facing multiple disadvantages in Newport. Liz Laurence, Homewards' programme director, said: "We're proud to say, as we head into our third year, that Homewards is the broadest collective effort working to prevent homelessness across the UK." She added: "We set out with a mission to demonstrate that together it's possible to end homelessness, and I think we are really confident about where we are. We are starting really to see a difference on the ground." About 200 new nurseries to open at schools in England in September
About 200 school-based nurseries will open in England this September as part of the government's plan to improve access to childcare for working parents. The milestone will be announced on Monday by Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, who will say that the sites will accommodate 4,000 children under school age. A further wave of school-based nurseries will launch in the autumn, taking the total to 300, adding to other measures aimed at helping parents such as free breakfast clubs, more free hours of childcare, an expansion of free school meals and a cap on school uniform costs. Phillipson said: 'Every corner of the early years sector has a vital role to play, and the progress made so far, in the face of an enormous inherited delivery challenge, is testament to their dedication to children and families up and down the country. 'This September is only the beginning. This government has a clear plan for change to get tens of thousands more children school ready each year so that every child, from any background, gets the opportunities they need to get on in life.' Phillipson first announced the plan just before the Labour party conference last year, saying 300 sites would be open within 12 months. The government said the 200 sites getting ready to open were exceeding the number of places they thought they could offer, with 4,000 projected. Phillipson said the schools were chosen in places currently underserved by the market. There will be an average of 20 places for each site and up to 6,000 new places when the programme is complete. The government believes that 30 funded hours of childcare a week will save parents up to £7,500 on average, while £450 a year will be saved through free breakfast clubs in schools. Last month, the government announced almost £370m of further funding to support the future of the programme. Some of the sites involve the conversion of empty classrooms into early years settings. Wayne Wathen-Howell, the headteacher of Minet infant and nursery school in Hayes, said: 'We're proud to be opening a new nursery right here in our school – it's a big moment for our community. 'Parents have told us how important it is to have affordable, high-quality childcare close to home, and this new nursery will make a real difference. Not only will it help families balance work and family life, it also gives our youngest children the best possible start in a familiar, supportive environment.'

More people could get help to navigate their financial lives, says regulator
'Once-in-a-generation' proposals to help more people navigate tricky financial decisions and boost confidence when getting to grips with investments and pensions have been set out by the City regulator. The proposals would enable firms to offer a new type of help called 'targeted support' and make suggestions to groups of consumers with common characteristics. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is aiming to reduce the 'advice gap' – so that people have timely access to the help they need, at a cost they can afford, to make informed decisions about their financial lives. The FCA said people who may be currently drawing down on their pension unsustainably, not saving enough for retirement or who have excess cash sitting in a current account, could potentially be helped. Sarah Pritchard, deputy chief executive of the FCA, said: 'We want to help consumers navigate their financial lives and plan for the long term. Some of the most difficult financial decisions we face are how to save, invest and prepare for a comfortable retirement. 'These once-in-a-generation reforms will help people navigate their financial lives and give them greater confidence to invest. This is a win-win for consumers and firms alike.' The reforms should set the framework for the next 20 to 30 years, the regulator said. The FCA said that as well as targeted support, it wants to see a thriving and trusted market for full financial advice, simplified advice and guidance. It said the advice gap is 'stark'. Just 9% of adults received financial advice about their pensions or investments in the previous 12 months, according to the FCA's latest Financial Lives survey 2024. Of those who did not receive financial advice, but hold £10,000 or more in cash savings, 24% said they do not invest because they do not know enough about it, 12% because they feel overwhelmed by the number of options available, and 8% said they would need more support before they invest. The FCA said there are around seven million adults in the UK with £10,000 or more in cash savings who may be missing out on the benefits of investing throughout their lives. Its consultation is open for eight weeks. The regulator said it is also working with the Government to help resolve issues that might prevent firms communicating with consumers. Dan Olley, chief executive at Hargreaves Lansdown, said the changes 'will be truly transformational in kick-starting a thriving retail investment culture in the UK over the coming years'. He continued: 'For the first time, we will be able to provide targeted support that is much more relevant for each of our clients. 'We will be able to tailor conversations and the digital experience to where they are in their investing journey, helping them see the potential of certain choices, which could have large positive impacts on their financial outcomes over the long term.' Tom Selby, director of public policy at AJ Bell, said: 'Ensuring people can access the help and support they need, either through regulated advice or guidance, is critical to building financial resilience in the UK. The existing regulatory framework makes it difficult for firms to offer anything beyond relatively basic information to non-advised customers without risking straying over the boundary from guidance to advice. 'This means millions of people who don't take regulated advice are essentially left to make often complex retirement decisions on an island, without receiving the help they require.' Claire Exley, head of financial advice and guidance at JP Morgan-owned wealth manager, Nutmeg said: 'Targeted support is a much needed and welcomed first step in closing the advice gap. 'We know clients are looking for guidance that is relevant to them, their situation at the time it's right for them. ' People like you' scenarios will hopefully help consumers to build confidence in their own decision making – we're aware that often people are looking for reassurance that they've arrived at the 'right' decision – rather than being told what the decision should be.' James Heal, director of public policy at St James's Place, said: 'We are moving closer to a new form of support that will help consumers make better investment decisions.' Yvonne Braun, director of long-term savings policy at the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said: 'We know facing complex financial decisions can feel overwhelming, especially in retirement, which is why we've long championed targeted support. The FCA's decision to press ahead with this crucial proposal is very welcome and should be a relief to millions of savers. 'We expect targeted support to be free and widely available. To ensure its success, it should be backed by a clear process for fair compensation if things go wrong. Giving firms the freedom and flexibility to roll out targeted support across a range of products and scenarios will make sure everyone can benefit. We also welcome the drive for simplified advice. While no single solution will entirely close the advice gap, this package is a major leap forward.' Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: 'Too many people are missing out on the support they need build a more secure financial future for themselves and their families. 'Today's reforms will make a real difference to help working people make better long-term financial decisions, ultimately putting more money in their pockets as part of our plan for change.'
