Lucknow court grants bail to Rahul Gandhi in Indian Army ‘defamation' case

A special MP-MLA court in Lucknow on Monday granted bail to Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, in a defamation case over remarks allegedly made against Indian soldiers during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Gandhi appeared in person before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma to seek bail after missing five earlier hearings. His appearance followed the Allahabad High Court's rejection of his plea in May, where he had challenged both the defamation complaint and the February 2025 summons issued by the MP-MLA court.
The Allahabad High Court had dismissed his challenge stating that while Article 19(1)(a) guarantees freedom of speech, it does not cover defamatory statements against individuals or the Indian Army. Justice Subhash Vidyarthi observed that such statements fall outside the ambit of constitutional protection.
The case stems from a complaint filed by former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) director Uday Shankar Srivastava, who alleged that Gandhi's remarks during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 16, 2022, defamed the Indian Army. Gandhi had allegedly commented that the Chinese army was 'thrashing' Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh and accused the Indian media of not questioning the government on the matter.
Gandhi was represented by advocates Pranshu Agrawal, Mohd Yasir Abbasi, and Mohammed Samar Ansari.

White House AI czar says resuming Nvidia's chip sales to China is all about capping Huawei's growth

David Sacks, the White House's AI and crypto czar, said on Tuesday that allowing Nvidia to sell its chips in China again will help keep the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei at bay. "There is a compelling argument here that you just don't want to hand Huawei the entire Chinese market when Nvidia is capable of competing for a big slice of it with a deprecated, less capable chip," Sacks said in an interview with Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow. Nvidia said in a blog post on July 14 that it was "filing applications to sell the NVIDIA H20 GPU again." The H20 chip is a China-specific product that Nvidia developed to meet chip export restrictions that the Biden administration had imposed. The chip was designed to be technologically inferior as compared to Nvidia's other offerings. "The US government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and NVIDIA hopes to start deliveries soon," the post added. In April, Nvidia said the Trump administration wanted them to apply for special licenses if they wanted to sell their chips to China. Nvidia said it expected a charge of up to $5.5 billion due to those restrictions. Sacks said on Tuesday that the administration's volte-face is "nuanced" and "makes a lot of sense" when you consider the threat posed by Huawei. "We're not selling our latest greatest chips to China, but we can deprive Huawei of basically having this giant market share in China that they can then use to scale up and compete with us globally," Sacks told Ludlow. Last month, Sacks said in a separate interview with Bloomberg that " overly restrictive" chip export controls would hurt rather than help US tech dominance. "China is maybe one and a half to two years behind us in chip design. But Huawei is moving fast to catch up. And even before they fully caught up, I think you will see them exporting their chips for the global market," Sacks said. Sacks isn't the only one who's wary of Huawei. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, said in an interview with the Financial Times published in March that Huawei is the " single most formidable technology company" in China. Huang said Huawei's "presence in AI is growing every single year" and Nvidia "can't assume they are not going to be a factor." "They have conquered every market they've engaged," Huang said of Huawei. He added that the US government's attempts to cap Huawei have been "done poorly." Nvidia's stock climbed by as much as 5% on Tuesday after it said it would resume its chip sales to China.

Trump announces creation of 'AI economy' during innovation summit

July 15 (UPI) -- Pennsylvanians and the nation will benefit from $100 billion in energy- and artificial intelligence-related investments announced on Tuesday to energize the nation's growing AI economy. The investments should create tens of thousands of new jobs for Pennsylvanians in the energy and AI sectors while helping the United States improve its economy and global AI standing, President Donald Trump said during Tuesday's inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh. "We're here today because we believe America's destiny is to dominate every industry and be the first in every technology," Trump told attendees. "That includes being the world's No. 1 superpower in artificial intelligence," he added. The president said the United States is "way ahead of China" in AI development and has many plants under construction. "China and other countries are racing to catch up to America having to do with AI," Trump said. "We're not going to let them do it," he said. "We have the great chips [and] the great everything." Trump said the United States is "going to be fighting them in a very friendly fashion," adding that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping have a "great relationship." "Remaining the world's leader in AI will require an enormous increase in energy production," Trump told the audience. He said "clean, beautiful coal" and oil production will be a key element in producing more electrical power to support AI endeavors in the United States and to stay ahead of China in AI development. More than $56 billion in new energy infrastructure and $36 billion in new data projects were announced on Tuesday, the president said. A $15 billion investment by Knighthead Capital Management will create the largest natural gas-fired power generation plant in North America in Homer City, Pa. Google also is investing "billions and billions" to revitalize two hydropower facilities in the commonwealth, Trump added. Westinghouse officials also have announced that the company will build several nuclear power plants throughout the nation to ensure the AI economy has ample energy available. "A lot more than that will be announced in the coming weeks and months," Trump added. The president said 20 "leading technology and energy companies" are poised to invest in Pennsylvania to develop an AI economy that utilizes the commonwealth's energy and technology assets, CBS News reported. Many firms are investing elsewhere in the country, too, in order to support the nation's AI economy, according to the New York Post. Trump spoke for about 30 minutes during the hour-long Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit, which was organized by Sen Dave McCormick, R-Pa., and held on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. Pennsylvania's Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro and others joined Trump and McCormick to discuss energy matters and the growth of AI in the United States.

Pew: World's view of China, Xi improves slightly

Crowds watch Chinese performers take part in a traditional Qing Dynasty ceremony, in which emperors prayed for good harvests and fortune, during a week-long series of events to mark the Chinese new year on the grounds of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing in 2012. According to a new Pew survey, China is the world's undisputed top economic power to many of the survey's respondents. File Photo by Stephen Shaver/UPI | License Photo July 15 (UPI) -- A new Pew survey is suggesting that global viewpoints on China may be trending in a slightly more positive direction for the communist nation. The Pew Research Center poll of 25 surveyed countries released Tuesday indicated that a large segment of the global population views China as the world's undisputed top economic power. Pew officials say the results contrast from 2023, the last time the question was posed. It noted that shares of people with a favorite view on China jumped in the last year in 15 of the 25 countries part of the Pew survey. The new results from spring's survey outlined how a median 41% of polled adults spread out in the 25 countries believe the Chinese economy is the world's greatest, while nearly the same number of 39% say it's the United States with the greatest economy. Pew noted that it's the first time since 2020 that opinions on Chinese influence turned in a more positive light following historic, or near historic, lows in recorded data dating nearly 20 years. Notably, the survey said that confidence in Chinese President Xi Jinping to do the right thing in diplomatic affairs also went up in many of the countries surveyed. But despite the shift, Xi and overall view of China "remain broadly negative," according to Pew Research. It says a 36% median of surveyed adults had a favorable Chinese view, while 54% had an unfavorable view. The survey added that 25% of people had confidence in the Chinese leader versus 68% who had little or no faith in Xi. The research center pointed out that while Xi's numbers did improve, it spurred an opposite reaction on outlooks on the United States and President Donald Trump. "Today, international views of the two superpowers and (Trump and Xi) are closer than they have been at any point since 2020," the survey results read in part. In 12 countries spanning regions and income levels, China is viewed as the top global economic powerhouse. Results showed that it was the most common opinion in most of surveyed Europe by majorities in Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain, and by roughly half of adults in France, Hungary and Poland. By contrast, survey respondents in nine countries say the United States is the better economy. Including polled Americans in Pew's survey, a majority of respondents in Israel, Japan and South Korea agree on U.S. economic might with split feelings in Brazil, Kenya, the Netherlands and Britain. Pew's survey results arrived the same day it was revealed that China ended up bucking second quarter's economic expectations in the face of the U.S. president's global tariffs despite a slowdown in the Chinese economy.
