HC to bank: SC ruled Aadhaar not must to open a/c, pay 50k for delay

Mumbai: Bombay high court has directed Yes Bank Ltd to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation to a private company for delay in opening its bank account after Supreme Court's Sept 2018 judgment that Aadhaar is not a mandatory requirement for opening bank accounts. "The bank account was ultimately opened in Jan 2019. Therefore, for a period of three to four months, the petitioner was unable to rent out the premises," said a bench of Justices Mahesh Sonak and Jitendra Jain on June 26. Microfibers Pvt Ltd could not rent out its premises in Nariman Point without a bank account. In Jan 2018, it applied to the bank to open an account. In April 2018, the bank replied that providing an Aadhaar card was mandatory for opening an account. The petitioner pointed out that Supreme Court's interim orders suggested that insisting on an Aadhaar card was not legal or proper. Since the bank did not yield, the petition was filed in HC. On June 26, the petitioner's advocate, Niyam Bhasin, confirmed that the account was opened in Jan 2019. He said in Nov 2018, HC admitted the petition for a final hearing on the prayer for Rs 10 lakh in damages. The judges noted that the bank "had not bothered to file its reply". Bhasin said for a year, from Jan 2018-Jan 2019, the premises could not be rented out. The founder-director died and is survived by his 84-year-old wife and his daughter. Bhasin said rent in the area in 2018 was in the range of Rs 1.5 lakh per month. The bench noted that in April 2018, when the bank insisted on an Aadhaar card, Supreme Court's interim orders were in operation. However, in Sept 2018, the apex court struck down the requirement of an Aadhaar card for opening bank accounts. "Therefore, from Sept 26, 2018, onwards, there was no impediment to the respondent-bank opening the account without insisting on an Aadhaar card," it added. It, however, said the claim for Rs 10 lakh compensation is "exaggerated and cannot be granted". Without relegating the petitioner to an alternative remedy and taking into consideration the circumstances cumulatively, the judges directed the bank to pay Rs 50,000 within eight weeks. Property Tax Receipts Rise 20%,89Cr Collected In First Quarter

1 2 Nagpur: Approximately 22.98% of Nagpur's 8.36 lakh property owners paid their taxes in the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year to avail the rebate scheme — 15% for online and 10% for offline payments — offered by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for the period. Between April 1 and June 30, as many as 1,92,324 taxpayers collectively paid Rs88.85 crore in property tax. Of the total, 96,993 property owners used online platforms like the NMC website, the My Nagpur mobile app, and the WhatsApp chatbot, paying a total of Rs 49.92 crore. The remaining 95,331 taxpayers paid Rs35.97 crore at zonal offices and special camps. The trend signals both improved compliance and a rising preference for digital modes of payment. NMC commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari rolled out the rebate scheme to encourage early payments. The scheme, backed by an aggressive outreach strategy, was instrumental in improving the tax collection. In the light of early trends and collection patterns, Chaudhari has revised the revenue target to Rs400 crore from Rs350 crore set earlier. Compared to Rs73.13 crore collected in the same quarter last year, this year's tally marks a 20% increase — affirming the success of NMC's digital push and incentive-led model. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Post the first quarter, the civic body is offering rebates of 10% for online and 5% for offline property tax payments made till Dec 31, 2025. For effective implementation of the drive, Chaudhari chaired several review meetings with the tax department. Additional commissioner Vaishnavi B personally monitored zone-wise performance and visited properties to ensure ground level execution. Deputy commissioner Milind Meshram supervised the setting up of special tax camps in zonal offices, public gardens, housing societies, and schools. Taxpayers were encouraged to use their Unique Property Identification Number (UPIN) to quickly access their records and make payments online. Many preferred the convenience of paying from home, avoiding queues and travel. The civic body also ran creative awareness campaigns featuring characters like Sholay's Gabbar Singh to catch public attention. Slogans such as 'I Am a Responsible Taxpayer' were put up across the city and widely shared on social media, contributing to the enthusiastic public response. A last-minute rush on June 30, the final day for rebates, saw a record-breaking collection of Rs 5.88crore in a single day. Several zonal offices operated late into the night to handle the surge. Among the ten zones, Laxmi Nagar led with collections of Rs13.90 crore, followed by Hanuman Nagar (Rs11.37 crore) and Mangalwari (Rs10.81 crore). IIT-Kanpur, IBM to harness AI to fight air pollution in UP

Lucknow: IIT-Kanpur's Centre of Excellence in AI for Sustainable Cities and IBM , a leading provider of global hybrid cloud and AI, have joined hands to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fight against air pollution in Uttar Pradesh . The collaboration aims to enable data-driven, localised solutions that balance economic development with environmental sustainability, aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat. A first-of-its-kind implementation in UP, the AI-powered solutions will support India's airshed strategy. The project is led by dean, Kotak School of Sustainability and project director of Airawat Research Foundation, IIT-K's CoE in AI for Sustainable Cities, Prof Sachchida Nand Tripathi, whose team pioneered the use of low-cost indigenous sensors. These sensors overcome the limitations of expensive imported alternatives to map pollution sources across every block in UP. This foundational work led to the development of India's first airshed-based framework for air quality management. IIT-K director Prof Manindra Agrawal said, "Today marks a powerful convergence of vision and technology. With the AI-powered Air Quality Stack, we will empower policymakers to take precise, location-specific action that safeguards public health and sustains economic momentum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Our collaboration with IBM exemplifies how world-class science and global tech leadership can drive forward the national vision of Viksit Bharat—creating cleaner, smarter cities that balance growth with environmental stewardship.
