
High court helps orphaned Mohali siblings save their home
The 19-year-old boy, currently pursuing a BA, and his 16-year-old sister, a Class 10 student, had approached the court in May, desperate to stop the bank from taking possession of their flat — the only roof over their heads — over a loan default.
Their father had taken a ₹20.31-lakh loan to purchase a flat for their family in a Mohali society. However, he had insured the loan only until 2022 and not for the entire repayment period.
Suffering from a prolonged illness, their father passed away in March 2023 at PGIMER, Chandigarh, after a sizeable spending on his treatment.
Their mother also died in September 2024, leaving the siblings orphaned and facing the unpaid home loan debt.
Due to non-payment of instalments since their father's illness in 2022, the outstanding loan amount had shot up to ₹24.62 lakh due to which the bank was about to take possession of their flat.
In their plea before the high court, the siblings shared that the family had been paying instalments regularly until their father's health crisis and proved this with bank records.
Moved by their circumstances, justice Anupinder Singh Grewal facilitated a settlement — with the bank agreeing to close the case at ₹10 lakh in view of the 'exceptional circumstances'.
The court went a step further, asking the bank to consider supporting the siblings' education. The bank's counsel agreed to examine it under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy.
'We expect respondent number 4 (the bank) to favourably consider the proposal for covering the educational expenses of the petitioners,' the bench said.
Additionally, the court directed the Punjab government to consider the siblings' request for financial aid 'sympathetically' under social welfare schemes, if they apply.
During proceedings, the siblings also sought time to arrange the ₹10 lakh settlement amount, which they hope to raise through contributions from Good Samaritans. The court allowed this and gave them until June 30, 2025, to make the payment.
'...the petition is disposed of with a direction that in the event of the petitioners paying a sum of ₹10 lakh by June 30, 2025, their loan account be settled and the title deed of the secured asset be released to the petitioners,' the court ordered.

Tourism, conservation and industry experts gathered at the conclave and deliberated on leveraging India's rich heritage for economic revitalisation, community development, and cultural continuity. 'Heritage conservation must be seen seen as both a moral obligation and a strategic investment, where country's heritage could be transformed from static monuments to vibrant and living symbols of identity, enabling it to continue inspiring and enriching future generations,' the 28-page report says. It also cited some successful conservation projects in various parts of India, as well as well-known preservation models in the UK, Spain, Italy and other countries. The report, jointly made by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) and KPMG in India, stresses that heritage conservation in India is 'at its defining moment'. It must be recognised that the 'cultural landscape' around a heritage site is 'critical for the interpretation of the site and its built heritage', and thus is very much its integral part. Owing to its importance and nature of role in serving as a record for future generations, it becomes imperative to preserve this history and culture, hence requires time-to-time conservation, it says. The report through succinct examples underlines that heritage conservation means all the processes of looking after a place to retain its historical, architectural, aesthetic, cultural significance and includes maintenance, preservation, restoration, reconstruction and adoption or a combination of more than one of these. It also lays emphasis on adaptive reuse of heritage buildings as cafes, museums, galleries or other cultural spaces, and creating synergy through public-private-partnership (PPP) models, citing the case study of Uttar Pradesh. Besides, the report also recommends funding through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and underlines coupling it with community outreach for best results. The report acknowledges the role of technology in this sector, and pitched for using Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) for immersive storytelling and smart management tools for visitors' analysis and climate-responsive monitoring. On digital preservation, it emphasised on using technology to document, conserve and promote heritage and create inventories, especially for sites vulnerable to climate threats or human conflict. It also pitched for combining state and private funds to increase the overall funding available for heritage conservation projects. India is endowed with iconic sites such as the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, ruins of old Nalanda university, ancient temples, medieval tombs and colonial-era structure and relics, which draw both awe and interest and intrigue among travellers. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India's annual report (2022), cultural and heritage tourism is an important and evolving concept within India's total tourism economy, with growth potential fuelled by rising domestic demand and international interest in India's civilisation legacy, the report says. Citing a 2024 report, it further says that India's heritage tourism market is projected to reach USD 57.14 billion by 2033, driven by its rich cultural diversity, along with rising global interest in spiritual and experience travel, boosting domestic and international tourist inflow. The PHDCCI-KPMG report also cites some of the challenges facing efforts for heritage conservation, such as inadequate funding which can lead to neglect, deterioration, and loss of heritage sites; lack of technical expertise; insufficient community engagement; and maintenance challenges. The other factor is complexity of heritage projects. Heritage assets are often complex and multi-faceted. SEIL energy distributes 1000 bicycles to school-going children
Nellore, July 25 (UNI) In a significant step towards promoting education and enabling better access to schools for rural students, SEIL Energy India Limited, one of the largest independent power producers (IPP) in India, has donated 1,000 bicycles to school-going children in Addanki, in Bapatla District of Andhra Pradesh, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative on Friday. This initiative, aligned with SEIL Energy's CSR key focus area on Education, aims to reduce school dropout rates, particularly among children from underprivileged backgrounds and girl students who often face mobility challenges in remote areas. Energy Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Gottipati Ravi Kumar, formally handed over bicycles at Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Makkenavaripalem. The Minister also handed over 452 cycles to the students of ZPHS, Medarametla. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said, 'We are immensely grateful to SEIL Energy for their generous contribution of 1,000 bicycles. This initiative is a critical enabler in the Government of Andhra Pradesh's larger vision to distribute 10,000 bicycles to underprivileged children, ensuring that no child is denied access to education due to lack of transportation.' Tata Sons Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, has said that the company's main goal is to scale up its manufacturing excellence in semiconductors , electric vehicles , digital platforms and financial services. In the company's 2025 annual report, he said that Tata Electronics, which makes an annual revenue of ₹66,000 crore, is focusing on building a vertically integrated ecosystem for technology hardware and semiconductor manufacturing.
