Deadly building collapse in Karachi kills 15, leaves nine injured

KARACHI — A residential building collapsed in the southeastern Pakistani city of Karachi, killing 15 people and injuring nine others, local media reported on Saturday. The five-story structure, located in Sindh province, came crashing down on Friday afternoon, according to Dawnnewspaper, which cited police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed. Rescue teams worked through the night to search for survivors and recover bodies from the debris. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza said the building had been previously declared uninhabitable by local authorities due to its deteriorating condition. He added that the structure was further weakened by recent heavy rains, ultimately leading to the collapse. Dr. Syed confirmed that no additional injuries were reported after 3 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) on Friday, with the final number of injured holding at nine. — Agencies

Four dead, dozens missing after ferry sinks off Bali

JAKARTA — At least four people have died and dozens are missing after a ferry sank off Indonesia's tourist island of Bali, rescuers said. The boat was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members when it sank at 23:20 local time (15:35 GMT) on Wednesday while on its way to Bali from Banyuwangi on the eastern coast of Java island, the Surabaya office of the National Search and Rescue Agency said. Thirty-one survivors have been rescued, the agency says, as the search continues. Authorities are investigating the cause of the sinking. The ferry operator had reported engine trouble shortly before it sank, while an official said the cause was "bad weather", according to local media. Many of the survivors are residents of the coastal town of Banyuwangi while others came from more inland areas of Java, according to a list released by authorities. President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an immediate emergency response from Saudi Arabia, where he is on an official visit. The vessel's route - one of Indonesia's busiest - is often used by locals going between the islands of Java and Bali. Photos published by Antara news agency showed ambulances on standby and residents waiting for updates by the roadside. Marine accidents are frequent in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of around 17,000 islands, where uneven enforcement of safety regulations is a longstanding concern. Indonesia issues highest alert as volcano erupts

JAKARTA — One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes spewed a huge ash cloud more than 11 kilometers into the sky on Tuesday after officials issued the country's highest alert. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, erupted at 17:35 local time (10:35 BST), the country's volcanology agency said, sending the vast cloud above the tourist island of Flores. A 7km exclusion zone was in place around the crater of the 1,584m (one mile) high twin-peaked volcano. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The volcano erupted multiple times in November, killing nine people and forcing thousands to flee. The ash cloud also forced flight cancellations. Geology agency head Muhammad Wafid said no one should carry out any activities within 7km of the eruption, and warned of potential lahar floods — a type of mud or debris flow of volcanic materials — if heavy rain occurs. Residents were also urged to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency meanwhile said that at least one village had been evacuated, and ash rain was reported in several others outside the exclusion zone. A spokesman called on residents around the volcano "to evacuate to safe locations" as tremors were still being detected, which indicated ongoing volcanic activity. Lewotobi Laki-laki's last eruption was in May, when authorities also raised the level to the most severe. Laki-Laki, which means "man" in Indonesian, is twinned with the calmer but taller 1,703m named Perempuan, the Indonesian word for "woman". — BBC
