592 compete in Oceanman Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu: Pantai Dalit again became the playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the Oceanman World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3 to 7. This year's edition of Oceanman Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline.
Advertisement The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km, and 500-metre relay race, as well as the Oceankids 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels. Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on Sunday, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly. 'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said Oceanman Event Director Azura Zainol Abidin. 'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. 'With such strong international representation, I believe Oceanman will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit. 'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' Julinus added. Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like Oceanman cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences. The Oceanman World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors. Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew is confident that Sabah will fully unleash its potential as a leading destination for Business Events (BE) or Meeting, Incentive, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) tourism. She said going by the relentless efforts made by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sabah is on the right track towards reaching this milestone in the not too distant future. 'We (Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment) fully support the SICC-organised Bigsabah Sale 2025 from October 31 to November 2, given its role in driving domestic tourism, empowering local entrepreneurs, and elevating Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. 'I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors,' Liew said after a courtesy call by the Chief Executive Officer of SICC, Datuk Dr Hajah Rosmawati Haji Lasuki on Tuesday. The Minister also noted that Sabah through the SICC is strengthening regional ties ahead of the event with expanded international participation. In her briefing, Dr Rosmawati, who is the Event Organising Chairman, stressed that Bigsabah Sale 2025 aims to further strengthen Sabah's positioning as the gateway to East Asean and the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end, for the first time, a curated B2B component will also be introduced for participants to create meaningful trade connections and unlock regional opportunities, she said. 'Which is why we are focusing on the 80 million population of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) region. Sabah can serve as a platform for these countries and other regions to promote their products and services. 'In this respect, we are stimulating growing international interest by extending invitations to other countries, including China, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan, to take part in this year's event. 'We are pleased to confirm that Thailand is committed to participating with 20 booths,' the Organising Chairman said, while enlightening the Minister on the momentum gained from her recent promotional visits to Brunei and Indonesia, along with outreach efforts across Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, to build regional participation and connect businesses to Sabah's growing marketplace. Sabah's golfer wins Kelantan women's title

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. World Bicycle Day on MPS calendar

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) plans to include the World Bicycle Day Ride as part of its official annual calendar to promote inclusivity and a sustainable lifestyle. Its President Walter Kenson said cycling is a unifying activity that transcends age, background and ability. It is open to everyone, including local leaders and both state and federal civil servants in the District. 'This is the spirit we want to cultivate in Sandakan. Organising casual cycling events such as this is in line with MPS's aspiration to develop the District into an eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable city. 'Cycling is more than just a leisure activity. It is a lifestyle that benefits both physical and mental health, while also helping to reduce pollution and urban traffic congestion,' he said. Walter believes that such programmes can strengthen community ties, raise awareness on green mobility, and encourage a culture of active living among Sandakan residents. He said this when officiating the District-level World Bicycle Day 2025 programme at the Piazza, Harbour Mall on Saturday. His speech was delivered by his deputy, Wilson Thomas. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, MPS Secretary and Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, and Sandakan Cycling Club (SCC) President Mohd Soffian Eting. MPS is among the first local authorities in Sabah to respond to the call and take the lead in initiating a World Bicycle Day ride in collaboration with Sandakan's cycling community. This year's event was held in partnership with SCC and several other agencies. Speaking to the media, Soffian welcomed the proposal to make the event a fixed item in MPS's annual calendar, saying the club is always ready to collaborate with the council on future programmes. 'Such events also help promote tourism in Sandakan through sports and recreation,' he said. A total of 180 participants from Sandakan, Felda Sahabat Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid took part in the 12km ride. Special recognition was given during the event to the oldest participant (64 years old), the youngest (12), and a participant in the disabled category.
