TrueMoney stands out in Thailand's virtual banking shake-up after licence win

[BANGKOK] Thailand is shaking up its sleepy banking sector.
The Thai Finance Ministry's decision to grant virtual bank licences to three consortiums on Jun 19 is set to inject fresh new competition to Thailand's staid financial sector – but for these newcomers, turning a profit may prove elusive.
Five consortiums threw their hats into the ring in February 2024, vying for a shot at Thailand's first new bank licences in decades. Only three made the cut. The winners must launch fully operational virtual banks within a year, each backed by at least five billion baht (S$196.4 million) in startup capital.
The three successful bidders are:
Ascend Money, owned by Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) and the main stakeholder in the TrueMoney e-wallet, backed by Ant International (an affiliate of Alibaba);
SCB X, the holding company of Siam Commercial Bank, in partnership with South Korea's Kakao Bank and China's WeBank, both established digital banks; and
Krungthai Bank, which has teamed up with telecom operator AIS (a unit of Gulf Energy) and OR, the retail arm of state energy giant PTT.
The two bidders who lost out were a Bangkok Bank-led consortium with Singapore's Sea Group, and a grouping of BTS Group (the Skytrain operator), Thailand Post, Saha Group and Lighthub Asset Group, which teamed up with Hong Kong-based fintech WeLab.
The Bank of Thailand (BOT) hailed the move to award the new licences as a way 'to help promote healthy competition in the system both in terms of quality and price… without affecting stability of the financial system.'

This means the central bank does not expect the virtual banks to be particularly disruptive of the well-established, very stable and quite profitable existing commercial bank system.
Thailand has around 16 commercial banks, but the top six – Bangkok Bank, SCB, KBank, Krungthai, Krungsri and ttb – dominate the market, accounting for 82 per cent of all loans and deposits.
There are also several government-owned banks set up to provide financial access for the 'underbanked' including SME Bank, Government Savings Bank, Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and the Islamic Bank of Thailand.
The new virtual banks are expected to focus on expanding financial access by targeting Thailand's 'underbanked' population, rather than merely poaching customers from the incumbent banks.
But some are not convinced. 'I am skeptical because the market is pretty saturated,' said Parson Singha, banking sector analyst at Fitch Ratings Thailand. 'It is going to be pretty difficult for them to get market share.'
Thailand's commercial banks and their state-run counterparts have done a reasonably good job over the years in extending credit to corporates, homebuyers, car owners, credit card users and even small and medium-sized enterprises. The result is that Thailand now has one of the highest household debt levels in Asia, with debt amounting to 89 per cent of gross domestic product.
That high ratio has barely budged over the past decade of sluggish growth – largely because GDP, the denominator in the household debt equation, has remained weak.
'The problem is not the lack of credit, but the lack of growth, lack of income,' said Singha. 'At the end of the day in depends on the wider economy as well, and this is not a great economy to bank in.'
Thailand's GDP is now projected to grow 1.6 to 1.8 per cent – one of the lowest rates in the region.
While GDP growth was decent in H1 2025, driven by exports and tourism, these two engines are expected to lose steam in H2. This is when US President Donald Trump's tariffs may kick in, leading geopolitical tensions to worsen and domestic politics to become more uncertain.
No one's expecting a sudden turnaround when the new virtual banks enter the market, slated for June 2026. But observers believe the new banks could begin making waves within the next three years.
Of the three licensees, the one with the most 'disruptive potential' is the one led by True Money. This is due to its significant reach in the country's key sectors from telecoms (True Corp, with 36 million subscribers) and agribusiness (chicken, pork, shrimp farms, feed and processed foods) to retail, where it has a presence in 15,000 7-Eleven outlets, Lotus' supermarkets and Makro wholesale stores – and now, banking.
CP has been operating e-wallet True Money since 2003, and currently has an estimated 20 million users – higher than some banks' customer bases. The app allows investors to make deposits and withdrawals (currently via a connection with Kiatnakin Phatra Bank), and invest in stocks and bonds.
A virtual bank licence gives the e-wallet provider the option to sever ties with Kiatnakin Bank and focus instead on building synergies across the vast CP Group ecosystem.
'With the banking licence, they can reach out to all those 20 million people right away, and most of them are living upcountry and are currently underserved... (they) will disrupt,' said Chonladet Khemarattana, president of Thai Fintech Association.
He pointed out that the real gamechanger is access to alternative data such as spending patterns and revenue flows captured through the e-wallet platform.
With a banking licence, True Money can also start providing more financial services to the CP Group, such as supply chain finance and cash management at CP's 15,000 7-Eleven outlets.
Meanwhile, SCB X stands to benefit from technology transfer from Kakao and WeBank (Tencent Group), while Krungthai has access to the AIS data base – some 50 million subscribers – as well as its own banking data.
Note that Krungthai was used as a conduit for the government's various relief programmes during Covid-19, and has thus acquired personal data on millions of underbanked Thais.
While each consortium brings its own strengths to the table, they will all have to grapple with Thailand's lacklustre economy alongside the challenge of making partnerships work. The track record does not imbue much confidence.
'All of them are individually good, but can they cooperate?' asked Chonladet. 'To be honest, I haven't seen many successful joint ventures or consortiums in Thailand.'

Toyota's internal inertia stifles digital transformation effort

[TOKYO] Inside Toyota Motor, a group of employees are worried about the company's future in an era when a car's software matters just as much as its sheet metal. The world's biggest automaker is known for churning out reliable cars such as clockwork, but it's been struggling to keep up with Elon Musk's Tesla, China's BYD and other frontrunners in the industry's shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) with sophisticated software. A somewhat obscure Toyota business unit called the Digital Transformation Promotion Department aims to change that. Established four years ago at the behest of then-chief executive officer and now chairman Akio Toyoda, the little-known group's mandate is to bring the carmaker up to speed by modernising it from within. The division's rank-and-file members are drawn from a wide cross-section of the corporate flow chart, everyone from R&D technicians to blue collar mechanics on factory floors. They all share a broad vision to introduce a more digitised future to a company with a stubbornly analogue culture. While they have managed to foster some changes, Toyota's core competency remains very much in hardware, with one foot in the world of EVs and its other planted in petrol-powered cars. That cautious approach has been key to the Japanese automaker's success so far. Yet it's also a source of frustration for some inside and outside the company who are pushing for quicker progress. 'Toyota sees the importance of software, but it's still slow,' said Kani Munidasa, chief executive officer of Code Crysalis, a Tokyo-based startup that's working with Toyota to put workers through Silicon Valley-style coding boot camps. Sign Up Sign Up Lukewarm commitment Some advocates for a software-led rethink at Toyota have grown disillusioned by what they see as a lukewarm commitment to reform from within, according to sources familiar with the matter. They point to a recent decision to fold the Digital Transformation Promotion Department into a larger business unit, threatening to short-circuit its mission as a change agent. The division, which previously reported directly to chief executive officer Koji Sato, was absorbed by the Digital Information and Communication Group 'to accelerate the internal promotion of digital transformation', Toyota said. 'We aim to create new value and transform business by accelerating collaboration among the various infrastructures and the use of artificial intelligence,' it said. In some ways, a similar fate befell Toyota's effort to create a digitally-focused, quasi-independent subsidiary called Woven. Despite bold ambitions to usher in a 'software-first' approach to car manufacturing, in the end, Woven was quietly folded back into the corporate mothership in September 2023 after its American executive departed and its portfolio was downsized. While Toyota's software team is not directly involved in the development of the cars it sells, they have undertaken a number of projects focused on the company itself. That includes creating a database to keep track of the company's fleet of test cars, overhauling a system employees use to apply for time off, replacing whiteboards with touch screens on factory floors and deploying robots to deliver medicine inside Toyota's 527-bed company hospital in Aichi prefecture, according to sources familiar with the matter. Another project involved extending access for remote workers to computer assisted design software using a virtual desktop infrastructure in partnership with Nvidia Corp. 'Moving forward, our plan is to roll out similar systems not only to Toyota Motor but also to Toyota group companies,' Masanobu Takahisa, a Digital Transformation project general manager, was quoted as saying in a 2021 press release about the campaign. Those efforts might not be transformative, but they are notable in a company where scissors are banned in the office out of an abundance of safety-minded precaution, and erasable billboards are still used to keep employees informed at factories. Looming 'digital cliff' Toyota is not unique among Japanese companies. While the country dominates in some high-tech fields such as industrial robots, its business culture is known for clinging to fax machines and other bygone technologies. The government in Tokyo has warned about failing to surmount what it terms a 'digital cliff' separating Japan from other advanced economies. In March 2021, sitting across from union members during the final round of annual wage negotiations, Toyoda, scion of the founding family and then CEO, said he wanted to break down internal information silos and put the automaker's digital innovation on par with top global companies within three years. 'Inside Toyota, it's still the case that only people 'in the know' are considered valuable, and that knowledge only belongs to a small group,' he said. 'By moving forward with our digital transformation, we can rid ourselves of that inequity and build an environment where its easier for everyone to focus on their work.' The Toyota City-based carmaker hatched the Digital Transformation division to heed that call with a team of innovative minds looking to break down antiquated systems and practices. The idea was that, if all went well, that reform agenda would rub off on other parts of the company, boosting resiliency and productivity. But the progress has been piecemeal and the division is far from achieving its long-term goals, the sources familiar said. Former employees who spoke anonymously with Bloomberg described a workplace bound by conformity, with a paternalistic bureaucracy that values harmony over new ideas. One ex-employee joined Toyota because they were interested in autonomous driving, but instead felt trapped for several years doing quality control on mundane electronic parts. Toyota's global success, its record as the world's biggest automaker for five consecutive years and its status as Japan's biggest and most important company, has arguably created a self-enforcing inertia. Talk among employees of transferring or quitting usually triggered the same reaction: Why would anyone want to leave? It's not the only legacy carmaker struggling to adapt to modern technology. Volkswagen's Cariad software unit has been downsized following glitches and delays, while Ford Motor recently downgraded its next-generation advanced software project known as FNV4 by merging it with an existing architecture platform. That speaks to a larger issue involving the industry's ability to innovate fast enough to compete with the likes of Tesla and China's Xiaomi as well as Big Tech, which has moved aggressively into automotive dashboards with popular features such as Apple's CarPlay and Alphabet's Google Android operating system. Reinvention will not come easy for established automakers, said John Murphy, a senior automotive analyst at Bank of America. 'It goes into structures, platforms, technology, sort of the whole integrated operating system of a vehicle, I think, needs to be done differently,' he said. 'It's an uphill battle.' BLOOMBERG

[HONG KONG] Macau casino stocks are poised to continue their recent outperformance as special events and luxury hotel offerings help drive a recovery in gross gaming revenue, sell-side analysts say. A Bloomberg Intelligence gauge of Macau gaming shares has risen 53 per cent from a low in April, compared with a 30 per cent gain in the Hang Seng Composite Index. That's come as monthly gaming revenue for the world's biggest gambling hub beat analyst expectations for each of the past three months. Despite lingering worries over China's economic health and regulatory issues, concerts by Cantopop icon Jacky Cheung and Korean rapper G-Dragon helped draw visitors. Eased travel policy and railway improvements are among the factors seen keeping the uptrend going. 'We expect the supportive visa regime, enhanced travel infrastructure and the expansion of nongaming offerings to drive robust gaming revenue growth in 2025,' Morningstar analyst Jennifer Song said in a presentation last month. 'Shares are appealing now given the sector's favourable long-term outlook.' US-listed shares of Melco Resorts & Entertainment is leading gains, up 95 per cent from its spring trough, followed by a 70 per cent rise in Hong Kong-listed MGM China Holdings. Yet sector valuations remain low, which Song sees supporting further upside for Macau casinos. The Bloomberg Intelligence index is trading at 8.7 times enterprise value to estimated forward earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, below its five-year average of about 14 times. Monthly revenue figures will provide further clues for investors. 'July is expected to be another above-trend month,' Jefferies Financial Group analyst Anne Ling wrote in a note earlier this month. US, China to resume tariff talks in effort to extend truce

[STOCKHOLM] Senior US and Chinese negotiators meet in Stockholm on Monday to tackle longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world's top two economies, aiming to extend a truce keeping sharply higher tariffs at bay. China is facing an Aug 12 deadline to reach a durable tariff agreement with President Donald Trump's administration, after Beijing and Washington reached a preliminary deal in June to end weeks of escalating tit-for-tat tariffs. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from duties exceeding 100 per cent. The Stockholm talks, led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng, come right on the heels of Trump's biggest trade deal yet, with the European Union accepting a 15 per cent tariff on its goods exports to the US and agreeing to make significant EU purchases of US energy and military equipment. That deal struck with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday in Scotland also calls for US$600 billion in investments in the US by the EU, Trump told reporters. No similar breakthrough is expected in the US-China talks, but trade analysts said that another 90-day extension of a tariff and export control truce struck in mid-May was likely. Sign Up Sign Up An extension of that length would prevent further escalation and help create conditions for a potential meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in late October or early November. Spokespersons for the White House and US Trade Representative's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on a South China Morning Post report quoting unnamed sources as saying the two sides would refrain from introducing new tariffs or take other steps that could escalate the trade war for another 90 days. Trump's administration is poised to impose new sectoral tariffs that will impact China, including on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, ship-to-shore cranes and other products. 'We're very close to a deal with China. We really sort of made a deal with China, but we'll see how that goes,' Trump told reporters before his meeting with von der Leyen, providing no further details. Deeper issues Previous US-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing US and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia's H20 AI chips and other goods halted by the United States. So far, the talks have not delved into broader economic issues. They include US complaints that China's state-led, export-driven model is flooding world markets with cheap goods, and Beijing's complaints that US national security export controls on tech goods seek to stunt Chinese growth. 'Stockholm will be the first meaningful round of US-China trade talks,' said Bo Zhengyuan, Shanghai-based partner at China consultancy firm Plenum. Trump has been successful in pressuring some other trading partners, including Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, into deals accepting higher US tariffs of 15 per cent to 20 per cent. Analysts say the US-China negotiations are far more complex and will require more time. China's grip on the global market for rare earth minerals and magnets, used in everything from military hardware to car windshield wiper motors, has proved to be an effective leverage point on US industries. Trump-Xi meeting? In the background of the talks is speculation about a possible meeting between Trump and Xi in late October. Trump has said he will decide soon whether to visit China in a landmark trip to address trade and security tensions. A new flare-up of tariffs and export controls would likely derail any plans for a meeting with Xi. 'The Stockholm meeting is an opportunity to start laying the groundwork for a Trump visit to China,' said Wendy Cutler, vice-president at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Bessent has already said he wants to work out an extension of the Aug 12 deadline to prevent tariffs snapping back to 145 per cent on the US side and 125 per cent on the Chinese side. Still, China will likely request a reduction of multi-layered US tariffs totaling 55 per cent on most goods and further easing of US high-tech export controls, analysts said. Beijing has argued that such purchases would help reduce the US trade deficit with China, which reached US$295.5 billion in 2024. China is currently facing a 20 per cent tariff related to the US fentanyl crisis, a 10 per cent reciprocal tariff, and 25 per cent duties on most industrial goods imposed during Trump's first term. Bessent has also said he would discuss with He the need for China to rebalance its economy away from exports toward domestic consumer demand. The shift would require China to put an end to a protracted property crisis and boost social safety nets to encourage household spending. Michael Froman, a former US trade representative during Barack Obama's administration, said such a shift has been a goal of US policymakers for two decades. 'Can we effectively use tariffs to get China to fundamentally change their economic strategy? That remains to be seen,' said Froman, now president of the Council on Foreign Relations think tank.
