Carney bends against Trump: In surprise shift, Canada drops Digital Tax to reignite trade talks with US

Time of India2 days ago
On June 29, 2025, Canada's government said it is removing the
Digital Services Tax
(DST) to help restart trade talks with the U.S, as per the Department of Finance Canada. This decision comes from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who wants to get the best economic and security deal for Canada with the U.S.
Carney and Trump agreed to restart trade talks and aim to finish a deal by July 21, 2025. The DST was first introduced in 2020 because big tech companies like Amazon were making money from Canadians but not paying fair taxes.
Canada wanted to tax big tech
Canada had hoped for a global agreement on taxing digital companies but made the DST in the meantime. The tax was supposed to be 3% on digital services revenue from Canadian users if the firm made over $20 million per year, with charges going back to 2022, as per the report by Reuters.

The first DST payment was supposed to be collected on June 30, 2025, but now that's been cancelled. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will now introduce a law to officially remove the Digital Services Tax Act, as stated by the Department of Finance Canada.

Carney said the government will only make deals that help Canadian workers and businesses, and this move helps negotiations move forward. Champagne added that the goal is to make Canada the strongest economy in the G7, and scrapping the tax will help with that, as quoted by PM Carney in Finance Canada.
Trump pushed back hard
On Friday, Trump had suddenly stopped trade talks, calling the digital tax a 'blatant attack' on U.S. tech companies. Trump warned he would put new tariffs on Canadian goods within a week if the tax stayed, according to the report by Reuters.
This trade fight came just weeks after a friendly G7 meeting, where both leaders said they wanted a new deal in 30 days. After the announcement to drop the tax, stock markets rose, and good vibes spread to Asian markets too, according to reports.
In 2024, the Biden administration had also complained about the tax, saying it broke trade rules in the USMCA deal. Canada is America's second trade partner, just behind Mexico, and one buyer of U.S. goods, so keeping trade calm is important. Canada had avoided Trump's big tariffs from April, but still faces 50% duties on steel and aluminum, as per the report by Reuters.
FAQs

‘Lower taxes, higher wages,' Trump hails passage of 'Big Beautiful Bill', says American people are the biggest winners

After the US Senate passed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'—with Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding vote—President Donald Trump hailed the legislation as a "major policy win," and noted that 'American people would be the biggest beneficiaries' Calling it 'a bill for everyone,' Trump pointed to its key promises - lower taxes, increased wages, stronger border security, and a more powerful military. "Almost all of our Great Republicans in the United States Senate have passed our 'ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL.' It is no longer a 'House Bill' or a 'Senate Bill'. It is everyone's Bill. There is so much to be proud of, and EVERYONE got a major Policy WIN -- But, the Biggest Winner of them all will be the American People, who will have Permanently Lower Taxes, Higher Wages and Take Home Pay, Secure Borders, and a Stronger and More Powerful Military. Additionally, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security Benefits are not being cut, but are being STRENGTHENED and PROTECTED from the Radical and Destructive Democrats by eliminating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse from those Programs," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. As the Bill is now set to be presented at the House of Representatives (lower chamber), Trump urged that the bill is presented to his desk before July 4 (Independence Day of the US) "We can have all of this right now, but only if the House GOP UNITES, ignores its occasional 'GRANDSTANDERS' (You know who you are!), and does the right thing, which is sending this Bill to my desk. We are on schedule -- Let's keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4th vacation. The American People need and deserve it. They sent us here to, GET IT DONE!" Trump said. He also predicted a wave of economic expansion following the bill's enactment. "Our Country is going to explode with Massive Growth, even more than it already has since I was Re-Elected. Between the Growth, this Bill, our Tariffs, and more, 'THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL' sets the United States down a fiscal path by greatly reducing our Federal Deficit, and setting us on course for enormous Prosperity in the new and wonderful Golden Age of America," he said. The bill cleared the Senate in a 51-50 vote after days of intense negotiations. Lawmakers worked through the weekend before launching a 27-hour marathon of amendment votes, during which Republican leaders worked to win over dissenting members.

'It'll only get worse': What Trump said in warning to Hamas after Israel agreed on ceasefire

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Iran-backed Hamas to accept what he described as a 'final proposal' for a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in Gaza. US President Donald Trump (L) with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the White House, in Washington, US. (File)(Reuters) Trump, posting on social media, mentioned that his team had held talks with Israeli officials regarding the ongoing conflict, ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington next week. While Trump did not name the representatives involved, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance were scheduled to meet with Ron Dermer, a close adviser to Netanyahu. The Gaza war began after Hamas-led militants launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Around 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with fewer than half believed to be alive. In response, Israel launched a military offensive that, according to Gaza's health ministry, has killed over 56,000 Palestinians. The offensive has also triggered a widespread hunger crisis, displaced the entire population of Gaza, and led to accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and war crimes at the International Criminal Court — charges that Israel strongly denies. What did Trump say about Israel-Hamas ceasefire? Trump said that Israel has accepted the key terms needed to establish a 60-day ceasefire, during which efforts will be made to reach a broader resolution to the conflict. He added that Qatar and Egypt will deliver 'this final proposal' to Hamas. 'My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War,' Trump wrote. Urging Hamas to accept the offer, he added, 'I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better -- IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.' What Trump said about Netanyahu's visit Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he would travel to the US next week to meet with Trump and senior American security officials, as international pressure grows to halt the conflict in Gaza and secure the release of the remaining hostages. During a visit to a migrant detention centre in Florida, Trump said Netanyahu 'wants to end it too.' When asked whether it was time to push Netanyahu toward a ceasefire deal, Trump responded that the Israeli leader was ready. 'I think we'll have a deal next week.' Hamas spokesperson Taher al-Nunu told AFP the group is 'ready to agree to any proposal if it will lead to an end to the war and a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of occupation forces.' He added, 'So far, there has been no breakthrough.' Hamas has said it is open to releasing all hostages still held in Gaza under a deal that brings the war to an end. However, Israel insists that the war can only end if Hamas is dismantled and disarmed — a condition the group refuses to accept. One of the main points of contention in the negotiations has been whether any ceasefire should include a definitive end to the war. Hamas demands a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and a permanent halt to the fighting, while Israel insists the war will only end if Hamas agrees to disarm, surrender, and go into exile — terms the group has firmly rejected.
