ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani inaugurated Mosul International Airport on Wednesday, on the anniversary of the city's liberation from the Islamic State (ISIS).
In a brief statement on X, Sudani's office confirmed the news, sharing pictures of the inauguration ceremony.
Mosul, the capital of Iraq's northern Nineveh province, was captured by ISIS in June 2014 during the group's rapid expansion across Iraq and Syria. The airport was heavily damaged during the occupation, and the city was declared the capital of ISIS' so-called caliphate.
Reconstruction of the airport began in August 2022 with a budget of around 200 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $142.8 million).
The reopening was initially set for June 10 to mark the anniversary of the airport's fall to ISIS - a symbolic gesture meant to 'send a message of defiance against terrorism,' said Mohammed Kakayi, head of Nineveh's provincial council security committee, in an interview with Rudaw in early June. He added that the ceremony was postponed due to the prime minister's crowded schedule.
Originally established in 1920, the airport spans roughly 1,600 dunams. It marked a key milestone in early June when a plane completed the first test landing in over a decade.
Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil, who was aboard the test flight, called it 'historic' and 'long awaited.'
Speaking to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA), he confirmed that 'preparations for the inauguration of Mosul International Airport have been completed.
'The airport will officially open soon,' Dakhil then said.
During its occupation of Mosul, ISIS imposed a harsh interpretation of Sharia law, carried out widespread human rights violations, and destroyed numerous religious and cultural sites.
A major operation to retake the city began in October 2016, led by Iraqi forces with critical support from the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Kurdish Peshmerga forces also played a vital role in the offensive, particularly in securing the eastern and northern flanks, clearing surrounding areas, and cutting off ISIS supply lines.
Mosul International Airport was recaptured in February 2017, and the city was officially declared liberated on July 10 of the same year.

When first imposing the ban, Turkish foreign ministry spokesperson said it was in response to an alleged 'intensification' of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) activity in Sulaimani province. Sulaimani authorities and an Iraqi security team, which visited the airport, have denied the claims. KRG officials, especially Talabani, has repeatedly called for the ban to be lifted. Sulaimani on Friday witnessed the historic disarmament of a first group of PKK fighters as part of the ongoing efforts to establish peace between Ankara and the PKK. "Regarding the peace process in Turkey, we considered the PKK's disarmament process a historic step and emphasized the Kurdistan Regional Government's readiness to provide any form of assistance to ensure the success of the process," Talabani said. Inan also visited Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil. The two discussed a range of topics, including "the importance of intensifying efforts to ensure the success of the peace process in Turkey," according to a KRG statement.

Iraq resumes oil exports through Turkey's Ceyhan
Baghdad ( – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government in Baghdad have reached a settlement that will enable the resumption of oil flows from Iraqi Kurdistan to global markets via the Turkish port of Ceyhan, following a suspension lasting nearly 28 months. The Iraqi cabinet approved several decisions on Thursday, facilitating the return of oil from Iraqi Kurdistan to the global market through the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO). This also includes the quotas allocated to the Kurdistan region of Iraq for domestic consumption. The Iraqi cabinet decided that the KRG should immediately start handing over all oil produced in Iraqi Kurdistan's oil fields to SOMO for export. According to the decisions, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance is required to pay $16 for each barrel of oil received from Iraqi Kurdistan in compliance with the budget legislation, given that the volume received does not fall below the existing 230,000 barrels per day. Iraqi Kurdistan is currently producing 280,000 barrels of oil per day. 50,000 barrels per day are set aside for domestic consumption in Iraqi Kurdistan, with the remaining 230,000 barrels per day handed over to SOMO. Crude oil shipments through the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline have been suspended since March 2023. This pipeline previously accounted for approximately 0.5 percent of the world's oil supply. After the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris ruled that Ankara had violated a 1973 treaty by permitting oil exports without the approval of the federal government in Baghdad, oil flows via the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline were stopped. The ruling obligated Turkey to pay Baghdad $1.5 billion in compensation for losses caused by the KRG's illegal oil exports between 2014 and 2018.

Iraqi authorities blame illegal construction for Kut fire tragedy
Shafaq News – Wasit Iraqi authorities confirmed Thursday that the Kut commercial center in Wasit province, where dozens died in a massive fire, had been erected without permits and in direct violation of safety regulations. Speaking at a press conference, Brig. Gen. Miqdad al-Miri, Head of the Ministry of Interior's Relations and Media Department, told reporters that Civil Defense had explicitly denied approval for the project due to serious safety breaches. 'The owner,' he clarified, 'had been fined and formally warned before construction began, yet went ahead and launched the center just two days into a 60-day compliance deadline.' Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, according to al-Miri, has ordered a seven-day investigation, instructing authorities to identify those responsible without leniency and to coordinate with the judiciary for urgent legal action.
