McKinley Elementary School in Davenport celebrated the different cultures and backgrounds of their students with a Multicultural Day. The school hosts this event every year.
There was a culture fair in the gym where students could sample different foods and learn about different countries. The fair had different stations that each represented a country with different items. Students also danced, made crafts, and viewed flags from around the world. The Davenport Public Library, common chord, and the Figge had stations for kids to engage with also. ESL teacher Mariah Jensen told Our Quad Cities News this event is something students look forward to every year.
'They're really excited this is a really anticipated day that they're ready for, they talk about it all year.'
She says the school has students from all different types of backgrounds and there are 17 different languages spoken there. The school hopes this event is something that encourages inclusivity and understanding among the students.

22,000 obtain exit permit as rule takes effect from July 1

KUWAIT: The decision to force expatriates working in the private sector to obtain an exit permit with the prior approval of their employers comes into effect on Tuesday, July 1. The measure has been introduced for the first time in Kuwait to join other Gulf states, barring the UAE. Previously, private sector employees could leave the country at any time without permits. Local media cited the Public Authority of Manpower as saying that so far, around 22,000 expats have obtained the permit through the authority's website or through the government's Sahel app. Employees need to apply through Sahel or the authority's website. The employer must then approve the request online before the authority issues the permit. The authority said the decision applies to private sector employees who have residency in accordance with article 18, adding those who have article 19 residency – self-sponsored – are not required to obtain the exit permit. Government employees or article 17 residents have long been required to obtain an exit permit from their employers.

Dubai Secures SIBOS 2029 as UAE Strengthens Global Financial Standing

Dubai has been selected to host SIBOS 2029, one of the world's premier financial services events, reaffirming the UAE's status as a global banking and payments hub. Organised annually by SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, SIBOS brings together over 10,000 leaders from banks, fintech firms, and financial institutions. Dubai's selection reflects international confidence in the UAE's digital transformation, innovation in payments, and leadership in financial infrastructure. The UAE Banks Federation (UBF), in coordination with key partners including Dubai International Financial Centre, Dubai World Trade Centre, and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, played a pivotal role in securing the bid, with the support of the Central Bank of the UAE. UBF Chairman Abdulaziz Al-Ghurair said the decision underscores the UAE's growing reputation as a centre for global dialogue on financial innovation, secure banking systems, and modern payment infrastructure. This will be the second time Dubai hosts the prestigious event, having previously done so in 2013—the first Middle East and Africa destination to do so. Since then, the UAE has deepened its role in global financial connectivity through initiatives such as the SWIFT User Training Centre and the region's first National SWIFT User Group, launched in 2021. Jamal Saleh, UBF Director-General, called the hosting a milestone reflecting the UAE's progress in digital payments and alignment with international standards, powered by the National Payment Systems Strategy initiated in 2019. SWIFT EMEA CEO Marianne Demarchi welcomed the return to Dubai, praising its strategic location and role in fostering industry-wide dialogue. News Source: Emirates News Agency

RTA Launches Al Safa Street Improvement Project to Boost Traffic Flow and Urban Connectivity

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the Al Safa Street Improvement Project, a major infrastructure initiative designed to double road capacity and cut travel time by 75% along a vital stretch of the city. The move aligns with Dubai's strategic push to keep pace with rapid urban growth and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. The project spans 1,500 metres, extending from Al Safa Street's junction with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Street. It includes the construction of two bridges and two tunnels, totalling over 3,100 metres in length, and will increase the road's capacity from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Travel time on the stretch is expected to drop from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes. The initiative is part of a broader RTA master plan to enhance the city's road network, which also covers Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl Streets. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, said the improvements will serve a key area home to landmarks such as City Walk and the Coca-Cola Arena, and strengthen links with Downtown Dubai. In addition to traffic upgrades, the project emphasises pedestrian-friendly infrastructure with dedicated walkways, cycling tracks, and landscaped urban spaces. The first bridge will serve traffic from Al Wasl Street to Sheikh Zayed Road, while the second will support movement from Al Satwa Road. Tunnels will direct flow from Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street towards Al Wasl Street and manage traffic at the Al Wasl–Al Safa intersection. Complementary enhancements include upgraded lighting, signage, rainwater drainage, and utility relocation. The Al Safa project is a key element in Dubai's long-term plan to expand arterial road connectivity, improve traffic safety, and reduce travel times across the city's rapidly evolving urban landscape.
