Thembi Simelane to visit Eastern Cape after deadly storm claims 90 lives

Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, is expected to embark on a three-day visit to storm-stricken Eastern Cape, as the death toll from last week's deadly rains has climbed to 90.
The department said nearly 3,000 households have been affected, with over 1,000 homes or structures destroyed and more than 600 partially destroyed.
Provincial Department of Health confirmed that post-mortems have been completed on more than 80 bodies, with families having positively identified their loved ones. Premier Oscar Mabuyane further announced that Mthatha, the area hardest hit, has been declared a disaster area.

Simelane is set to meet with provincial and municipal leadership to decide on the next course of action to assist flood victims.
Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa conducted an inspection on loco at the Efata Bridge in Mthata where a bus scholar transport was tragically swept away due to the flooding.
Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness at the loss of lives and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, affected communities and Eastern Cape residents at large.

Rescue teams race against time and freezing temperatures
MTHATHA - Search and rescue teams in Mthatha are searching for two missing children. But a cold front bringing freezing temperatures and strong winds will make rescue efforts tough. Operations will begin at the Cicira River all the way to the Mthatha River with the hopes of recovering the bodies of the missing children aged between 8 and 12. The children were swept away in Decoligny, one of the other affected areas in Mthatha Rescue teams, including the Gift of the Givers, say they will not give up. The death toll from the Eastern Cape floods stands at 101. To date, the province faces R5-billion in flooding damage. Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Zolile Williams will provide an update on relocations, infrastructure damage, and ongoing government support.

Gift of the Givers bring hope to Cape of storms
JOHANNESBURG - As extreme weather continues to put South Africans in desperate situations, the Gift of the Givers says it is inundated by calls for help from flood victims. The aid organisation has set up a full-scale humanitarian operation in Saldanha Bay. Areas affected by the floods include Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Macassar, Nyanga and the Cape Winelands. Relief efforts will include the distribution of hot meals, blankets, warm clothing, essential hygiene products and emergency supplies.
