Heavy Rains Lash Boston Area, Shutting Down Roads
Portions of Interstate 93, a 190-mile-long highway that connects Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, were closed because of flooding, the Massachusetts State Police said. Several vehicles were stranded on the highway because of floodwaters, local news media reported.
The southbound exit in Milton, a suburb south of Boston with a population of about 28,000 people, was closed, and a highway lane leading to Quincy, another suburb, was inaccessible because of flooding early on Thursday, the authorities said. Flash flood warnings, indicating that flooding is taking place or about to happen, were issued for parts of Norfolk, Suffolk and Plymouth counties.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency warned commuters to avoid flooded roads, where vehicles can be swept away in less than two feet of moving water, and to not drive around barriers set up to divert traffic.
By midmorning, between 2 and 4 inches of rain had fallen in the areas covered by the warning, and up to 2 more inches of rain were possible, it said.
Other cities and suburbs that are expected to experience flash flooding include Weymouth, Braintree, Randolph, Stoughton, Dedham, Hingham, Canton, Scituate, Winthrop, Holbrook, Hull, Cohasset and Avon.

Orange-level weather warnings were in place for parts of Ireland on Monday morning after a night of heavy rain across the island. There were reports of localised flooding across parts of the island following a series of weather alerts on Sunday, with the unseasonably high rainfall into the start of the week. Forecasters predict affected areas could see half a month's worth of rain in less than a day after a warning was put in place for Antrim, Armagh and Down for the 24 hours from 6pm on Sunday. A more intense amber-level warning temporarily put in place overnight has since been lifted. The Met Office warned there is a risk that homes and businesses could be flooded. The expected rainfall carries a risk of flooding, power cuts and dangerous driving conditions. Forecasters also warn there is a small chance that some communities could be cut off by flooded roads while fast-flowing or deep floodwater could pose a danger to life. Simon Partridge, a forecaster with the UK Met Office, said: 'It looks like Northern Ireland is the place where we could see the most rainfall and certainly the most impactful rainfall. 'They could see 50 to 75mm of rain within 12 to 18 hours.' The region records an average of 89mm of rain in July, meaning more than half a month's rainfall could hit Northern Ireland in less than a day. A yellow-level thunderstorm warning was in place for the western half of Northern Ireland between midday and 8pm on Sunday. Flooding was already affecting routes in Fermanagh on Sunday evening, with the Marble Arch Road, Florencecourt, and Sligo Road, Enniskillen, both described as impassable by police. A PSNI spokeswoman said: 'Please take care when travelling, slow down, and exercise caution on affected roads.'

Powerful storm knocks down trees and damages homes in Massachusetts
After a strong thunderstorm moved across Massachusetts Sunday afternoon and evening, utility companies and tree crews were out that night surveying all the damage left behind. In Beverly, tree crews were out on Lakeshore Drive clearing streets of branches and leaves and chopping up the large trees brought down by the heavy rains and gusty winds. At least one large tree was ripped out of the ground and toppled over onto a home's driveway, crushing a car. Beverly Police said fallen trees have blocked off multiple roads. Late Sunday night, a little more than 250 customers were without power in the town. Police said they haven't received any reports of injuries from the storm. The Commuter Rail was also experiencing delays on the Newburyport/Rockport line due to downed trees on the tracks. For the latest on the delays, riders are asked to check the MBTA's website. Elsewhere, some communities like Framingham dealt with minor flooding from the heavy downpours. Late Sunday night, there was a little more than 1,000 customers without power across Massachusetts, according to MEMA. Boston and Belchertown have the most customers without power. The storm has since moved out and WBZ-TV meteorologists said the start of the week should be pleasant weather with low humidity and lots of sunshine. But there's potential for another heat wave later in the week, as temperatures climb into the 90s by the end of the week.

Maryland county fields more than 100 rescue calls in two-hour period
A Maryland county reported more than 100 rescue calls Saturday in a two-hour period during intense rainfall and flash floods — numbers normally seen in a 24-hour period. Significant rainfall from storms caused flash flooding in parts of Montgomery County, Maryland, located north of Washington, D.C., on Saturday, trapping many in buildings and cars. Across the D.C. region, areas like Silver Spring, Md. and Great Falls, Va., were hit with intense flooding following heavy rain on Saturday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood emergency for Silver Spring and surrounding areas. The alert, shared on Saturday night, has never before been used in the D.C. area since flash flood emergencies started being issued by the National Weather Service in 2003, and is the most critical flood warning, according to The Washington Post. Along Sligo Creek, Montgomery County flood sensors indicated that waters rose 10 feet in just 30 minutes. According to the National Weather Forecast, rainfall amounts varied across the region — Tacoma Park received between 2.5-3.5 inches, Silver Spring reported 3.5-4.5 inches, and the Chevy Chase area saw as much as 2.5 inches while Great Falls received up to 3.5 inches. "As far as the rain amount, you know, [it] might not sound all that substantial, but it had … happened in like an hour, hour and a half. So it's a very intense rain rate," said Cody Ledbetter of the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington. While no injuries were initially reported, dozens of water rescues were conducted throughout the evening. At 8:30 p.m., Montgomery County Park Police responded to a report of 20 people trapped inside a Chevy Chase building, carrying out water rescues of those stranded within. "Approximately 20 park patrons stayed inside the building with officers, for a couple of hours, until they were able to drive out a back road without incident," Tracy Lieberman of Montgomery County Park Police said. Montgomery County resident John Angel told CBS Washington affiliate WUSA-9 about a harrowing situation in which his wife and daughter were trapped inside their SUV on Sligo Creek Parkway. "We're on the phone, we're talking and then she was like, 'There's a lot of water.' And then she just hung up," Angel said. His family was successfully evacuated from their vehicle with the help of neighbors, who quickly moved to help. "When I came outside, I saw this car and it was basically just stuck in the flood," Angel said. "The next thing I heard was people yelling, trying to get her out of the car – it happened quick. They got her out — people in the neighborhood. Thank God." Residents were shocked by how fast the waters rose. Angel, who has lived in the area for 20 years, said he had never witnessed such intense flooding before. As of Sunday morning, Sligo Creek Parkway remained closed because of the floods. Other areas also reported road closures throughout Saturday evening. The flash flood emergency was valid through 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Looking ahead, forecasts predict some light showers Sunday and throughout next week, but it isn't until late next week when the possibility of more notable thunderstorms increases.
