Champion jockey Blake Shinn all but sealed the Melbourne premiership with a double at Sandown.
Shinn improved to a seven-win buffer on Craig Williams with victories aboard Cinematic Star and Betwitchery on Wednesday.
'It was a good to ride a double,' Shinn said.
'Definitely not out of the woods yet.
'We'll get over Saturday and see where we sit but seven is a nice buffer to have into Saturday.
'We've got the utmost respect for Craig and the jockey he is … we've both got strong books.'

Shinn and Williams boast full books of nine evenly-matched rides apiece on Saturday at Caulfield.
The metropolitan season rounds out at Sandown next Wednesday with an eight-race card.
Shinn missed a potential third winner on Wednesday, elected to ride eventual third-placed Shinjina for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman instead of Tiz Worthy, co-trained by partner Lucy Yeomans.
'I did offer him the ride on my horse and he didn't want it!' Yeomans laughed.
'They're working very hard, him and his manager (Liam Prior), it's good for the sport.'
Williams, a nine-time premiership winner, was denied by the barest margin in the first at Sandown.
Four scratchings on the card blunted any potential Williams charge on Wednesday.
• 'Little angel' could be spring Worthy after surprise win
Shinn missed six weeks with a foot injury but returned two weeks ago to defend the premiership – his second Melbourne title potentially in three seasons and third overall.
The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey also won the Sydney metropolitan title in 2007/08.
Shinn nailed the brief on Ciaron Maher-trained Cinematic Star on Wednesday, stalked the speed and scraped the rail to win without going around a horse.
'Good to see Blake get the win,' assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said.
'Push the boat out a bit further on Craig.'
Shinn dictated the 1400m Fillies Benchmark 64 aboard Betwitchery and survived a late charge and lunge from Chocolate Box on the post.
The result vindicated Shinn, who lobbied hard trainers Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin for the ride and race placement.
• 'We're going to improve': Baraqiel vulnerable in Bletchingly
'Well done to my agent Liam Prior, thanks to Troy and Will and Leon for entrusting us,' Shinn said.
'It's nice when a plan comes together … (Corstens-Larkin) been one of my biggest supporters when relocating back to Melbourne and nice to repay them with a winner here today.
'She looked well placed coming back to Saturday grade.'
Shinn is riding Apache Song in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) on Saturday at Caulfield while Williams has James Cummings-trained Kin in the feature sprint.

Angela Jones suspended at Doomben but still in box seat to claim Brisbane jockeys' premiership

Angela Jones copped a 13-day suspension and a severe reprimand from stewards on a dramatic Saturday at a wet Doomben but she's still in prime position to take out the Brisbane metro jockeys' premiership. Jones extended her lead to two victories over apprentice Emily Lang (64 wins) in the premiership race before a lightning storm brought a delay to proceedings after four races. At that stage Jones had already steered home a winner, gelding Space Age in a Benchmark 85 over 1615m, to inch closer to becoming the first woman to secure a Brisbane metro jockeys' crown. However, it wasn't all plain sailing for Jones, who copped a pair of riding suspensions and a severe reprimand from stewards from incidents in the opening race. Jones drew the ire of stewards for her ride on Tony Gollan's $2.20 favourite Boomshanka, being charged twice for careless riding. But her 13-day suspension won't impact her prospects of scoring the riding premiership, given she has deferred the ban to start after next Saturday's Eagle Farm meeting, which forms part of the new racing season from August 1. Chief steward Josh Adams told Jones: 'We don't want to sour what should be an exciting time for you. 'But out of one race, we have suspended you twice and also reprimanded you.' Space Age for Ange! She gets back out to a two win lead over Emily Lang in the Brisbane Jockeys Premiership, will she hold on? 😅😅 @cmaherracing â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025 Lang and Jones playfully donned boxing gloves for a photo shoot during the storm delay, but the gloves will be off when the premiership title goes on the line at Doomben on Wednesday. It will be a fitting end to a thrilling battle between the close mates, who both work for Brisbane's top trainer Gollan. Whoever wins the premiership, Lang said she will always be indebted to Jones for being a shoulder to lean on in the early days of her apprenticeship. 'I looked up to Ange for a long time, she was already race riding before I had even started riding trials,' Lang said. 'She went through the grades really quickly and I looked at her and I thought that's what I aspire to be. 'Ange put the writing on the wall in her first year in town as an apprentice and, as a female jockey myself, I really looked up to her.' Racing Queensland officials opted to reschedule the final race on the card, a 3YO Handicap over 1350m, to Wednesday at Doomben, as the light faded and the track deteriorated to a Heavy 9. In that postponed race, Jones was booked to ride Estrondo for trainer Rob Heathcote and Lang was due to pilot Fireforce for Kelly Schweida. Lang was denied a chance to narrow the gap in race seven when her ride Set To Shine was a late scratching at the barriers, with Jones finishing runner-up on Castillian ($3.40) to roughie Super Duck ($21).

Muswellbrook preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 27, 2025

Trainer Cameron Crockett is launching a double pronged attack on the Bengalla Cup with two horses that are the complete opposite. Crockett has Florino and Hulu in the $35,000 Cup (1280m) and admits the former has all the talent but isn't that mentally strong whereas the latter thrives when the going gets tough. Florino, a horse formally trained by Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich, is yet to break through for Crockett but can do so here if he gets some things to go his way. The son of Mikki Isle comes into the race having not gone a yard in heavy conditions at Mudgee but Crockett reports the gelding pulled up fine from the race. 'He's fine but it's just when the chips are down, he throws them away and that's what he did that day,' Crockett said. Hulu comes all the way from last to win at Muswellbrook! ðŸ' â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 2, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'Obviously, he's got all the ability but he just lacks that mental fortitude sometimes. 'But he pulled up well and I'd expect him to run better than what he did the other day.' Hulu comes out of the same last start race as her stablemate and she thrived in the heavy conditions, only going down narrowly despite a tough run in transit. Crockett isn't worried about the conditions with her and also thinks a return to Muswellbrook will suit where she's recorded three wins from four starts. 'She's just the complete opposite to Florino,' Crockett said. 'She just guts it out no matter what the conditions are and you saw her do that the other day. 'But she's not the easiest at home and I think if she knew we wanted her to win, she just wouldn't do it out of spite.' Bookmakers can't split the two with both opening at $7 with talented mare Chidiac the $2.25 favourite. A race later in the Scone Rural Supplies Handicap (1500m) will see Taipan Legend look to bounce back off a disappointing last start run. Crockett believes he's got a bit of Florino about him with the way he failed to fire in the conditions. 'He needs a lot to go his way in races and when it doesn't, he throws the toys out of the cot,' Crockett. 'He's a bit like the other horse actually with anything that goes against him, he just doesn't want to go on.' Lightning Speed leads the journey to win the 6th at Tamworth for @camcrockettrace! âš¡ @_TJC â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 23, 2024 The final race on the card, the Power FM Handicap (1280m), has drawn a capacity field and Crockett is hoping for some scratchings so Lightning Speed can come in a few barriers. The Scone-based conditioner thought Lightning Speed was his best winning chance prior to the barrier draw so he's just hoping for a bit of luck and for the rain to stay away. 'I was really disappointed with the barrier she drew because I actually thought she was my best winning chance on the day,' Crockett said. 'She does have the speed to overcome it so I'm not concerned about the barrier in that sense, but if she were to have a tough run on a slow track it might be tough for her. 'If it was a fast track I wouldn't have any worries so I'm just hoping the rain stays away. 'But she gets here off a throat operation and I thought she trialled really well. 'Ash (Morgan) won on her and he was pretty keen to stick with her so hopefully he can get the job done.' Meanwhile, Crockett was unable to get a run at Randwick on Saturday with Durova but he suggests punters follow her wherever she goes. 'I think she's one to follow,' Crockett said. 'I've been really impressed with her since I got her and I think she'll be winning a few races.' JETT HATTON'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 2 No. 1: LEADING IMPACT Debuted in a strong race on the Kensington when fourth to Grand Prarie. Can break through second-up. NEXT BEST Race 4 No. 1: BEYOND MY KEN He's going well and enjoyed stepping back in trip last start. Should be in the finish again. VALUE BET Race 6 No. 1: SURREAL I AM Forgive her last start run when not getting any clear room. She's going super and has come up over the odds. QUADDIE Race 4: 1, 2, 5, 6 Race 5: 2, 4, 7, 8 Race 6: 1, 9, 3, 10 Race 7: 2, 3, 4, 8 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW As is normally the case, AARON BULLOCK has a stellar book of rides and should get at least two winners. INSIDE MAIL - MUSWELLBROOK RACE 1: Country Boosted Mdn Hcp 1280m SNAP DECISION (1) was narrowly denied for a maiden win on debut when Justice Warrior couldn't be caught. Aaron Bullock was aboard that day and he sticks for the latest assignment. The way he hit the line would suggest the rise in trip, while only minor, will suit. DUNSTALLL THE GUN (2) ran on well in a race that lacked much tempo. Can position closer to the speed after drawing barrier four. MAGURTZ (6) looks to have a promising future, judging by what he's produced at the trials ahead of his debut run. Bet: Snap Decision to win â– â– â– â– â– RACE 2: Muswellbrook Motors Mdn Hcp 1000m LEADING IMPACT (1) led in a strong race on debut and faded to finish fourth. Can break through here in easier company. Gary Portelli has given Premium one trial ahead of her debut. Drawn well and think she'll run much better than the price would suggest. SALVATO (5) has trialled OK leading into her debut run. Gets Aaron Bullock in the saddle but might just need a touch of luck from barrier eight. WOOTTON PLEASE (12) debuted in a strong race at Warwick Farm that featured multiple stakes horses. Will be fit and ready to go for this with four trials preparation her for the first-up run. Bet: Leading Impact to win â– â– â– â– â– RACE 3: Pirtek Muswellbrook Mdn Plate 1750m NAVY PIER (4) was a beaten favourite at Taree last time out. Missed the start a length and as a result, he had to settle at the tail. It's normally hard to make ground at Taree and he couldn't. Getting to Muswellbrook suits and he'll have a fitness benefit being second-up into this run. JU TWO (3) comes out of a decent Gosford maiden and he did it tough that day when covering a stack of ground. Drawn wide here so needs luck. PIERRO'S GIRL (12) is trained by Chris Waller. She's been battling at her last few but gets her chance coming out to country level. Bet: Navy Pier to win â– â– â– â– â– RACE 4: Acorp Country Boosted Hcp (C1) 1000m BEYOND MY KEN (1) has steadily improved at each run this preparation. Just touched off by Star Amibition at his last start when back to 1000m. The short trip seems his go and he's drawn favourably. NOVA CENTAURI (6) was a strong winner at Scone first-up from a break. Got all the way back to last before getting to the centre of the track and ripping home for a big win. TOUGH GUY (5) is a former Victorian and won by four on his stable debut. The strength of the race has to be questioned though. Bet: Beyond My Ken to win â– â– â– â– â– RACE 5: Bengalla Cup 1280m HULU (8) has won twice this preparation from four starts and went very close to another last time out in a good race at Mudgee. Had to make the long run on that occasion too when only beaten a head by Zulfiqar. CHIDIAC (7) is a four-time winner from five starts with her only defeat coming in Highway grade. Won by a furlong when returning at Scone and she drops 4kg on that effort. CONTRIBUTINGFACTOR (1) has been running well at the provincial level. The form out of his races has stood up reasonably well. â– â– â– â– â– SURREAL I AM (1) was narrowly denied two starts back at Gosford before not getting a clear shot at Newcastle at his latest start. Drawn to get the run of the race from barrier one with Andrew Gibbons in the saddle. BUSH TELEGRAPH (2) didn't appreciate the heavy going last time out when carrying 60kg. Can improve here. DALE (3) is the horse owned by Matt Damon. Judging by his trials, and they're just trials, I don't think he's come back as good as last prep. Still has the talent to be in the mix here though. TAIPAN LEGEND (10) next best. â– â– â– â– â– LIGHTNING SPEED (4) is drawn a tricky barrier but she's come back in hot form and has the speed to overcome it. Just hope the track isn't chopped up by this stage of the card. ALL TOO WILD (8) looks to have a promising future. Hasn't been beaten far at all at her two starts this time in and she should be peaking third-up into the prep. CAPICELLA (3) and VIERVILLE (2) are worth considering too.

Sapphire Coast preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 27, 2025

A win on their home track would be the perfect end to a career best season for trainers Barbara Joseph and her sons Paul and Matt Jones. The stable set themselves a target of 52 winners for the year and enter the meeting on 51 winners with a strong hand to held them reach their goal. 'I like to set a target of 52 winners, that's a winner a week across the season,' said Paul Jones. 'This is clearly the best season we have had as a partnership but it would be great if we can get that last winner to reach our target.' Jones was extremely happy with the run of Graceful Ellen when a neck second at Narrandera two weeks ago and gives her a great chance to go one better in the Class 2 Handicap (1200m) with stable apprentice Claire Ramsbotham aboard. Nagadec gets there late on the outside to win the Sapphire Coast opener! ðŸ'¥ â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) February 13, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'She is a little filly who isn't overly robust but she is really well and I'm very happy with her,' he said. 'Claire rode her very aggressive the other day to suit how Narrandera was playing. 'The two speed horses around her dropped out and she was still fighting out the finish. It was a really good effort. 'She goes into this meeting as one of our best chances.' Although finishing down the track at both runs back from a spell, Jones feels Zouwase can figure prominently when he steps up to a suitable distance in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1600m). 'He has just been a bit immature in his action and changes stride two or three times in the straight,' he said. 'I just have to try and convince the jockeys to ride through it and he will hit the line. 'At home he is working very well. Billy (Owen) has ridden him once this week to get a feel for him. 'Walk The Pier is coming off a good win for a new stable and out of stronger races prior to that. He will be hard to beat but stepping up to the mile with the blinkers back on will help Zouwase.' Jones was pleasantly surprised by the debut performance of Texas Star when third behind Sir Franklin and The Main Event at Moruya and expects him to run well again in the Super Maiden Handicap (1200m) despite a wide draw. We're off and racing at the Sapphire Coast and it's She's High Society who goes home best in the opener! @JJRacing_ACT â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 2, 2024 'He was giving away a lot of experience but I was very happy with his run behind two pretty nice horses,' Jones said. 'Unfortunately, he has draw out wide so we might have to be a little negative early and try and get across to the rail and sneak some runs. 'I feel when the track is wet there, it's better to be closer to the rail as you turn into the straight.' Jones was pleased to see Kneel Down draw a good gate in the opening event, the Maiden Plate (1000m) after wide draws impacted on his two runs at Moruya. 'He drew well at his first start and was beaten a head but he drew wide at his next two starts where he had to be ridden backwards,' he said. We have freshened him up and blinkers on and his work on Tuesday was excellent.' Jones said She's High Society is ready to run a big race first-up in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m) despite not having a barrier trial or jumpout. 'With a lack of barrier trials jumpouts, we have given her eight or nine gallops to get her ready and she is working the house down,' he said. 'She drawn well and if she can hang on the back of Sir Franklin, I think she can run in the top three.' ADAM SHERRY'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Debuted for a new stable with a big win last start. The one to beat again. NEXT BEST Race 5 No.6: LONDON STAR Came from a long way back when runner-up to Walk The Pier. Can go one better. Visors on and can go one better. KNEEL DOWN (1) is better than his last two starts after drawing wide gates. Was a head second on debut over 1100m at Nowra. Blinkers go on and drawn to get an ideal run. SMOLENSKI (8) is a first starter by Farnan. Was good after sitting wide when third to Exiled Prince and sixth to Duke Of Bronte in his two Goulburn trials. Bet: Your Magic to win â– â– â– â– â– DENI GAL (2) has had a long campaign but continues to race well. Appreciated a drop in grade to storm home and win at Moruya last Monday. In the same grade is a winner at this track and distance. SIR FRANKLIN (1) finished runner-up in his first four starts including on debut here over 1000m behind Southern Deel. Rewarded for his form with an all-the-way win from The Main Event at Moruya on July 11. SHE'S HIGH SOCIETY (9) scored a nice win from Zoutemus over 1000m here back in December. Only two runs last prep after some bad luck. Will make her presence felt. Bet: Deni Gal to win â– â– â– â– â– GRACEFUL ELLEN (4) kicked off her campaign with a narrow win at Bathurst after being taken wider on the turn. Raced up on speed and kept fight when a neck second to Sundrop who had the sit on her at Barrandera last start. ALOTTOSAY (2) ran three consecutive placings to start her career including a long neck second to Throw One In here before breaking through with a nice win at Nowra on Apr 20. Resumed with a barn storming win from Winnie Fortune at Moruya on July 11. TIMELESS GRACE (5) won well on debut at Wagga but disappointed at Moruya last start. Blinkers go on. â– â– â– â– â– WALK THE PIER (3) had some handy provincial form including a debut second to Correon at Kembla before changing stable and scoring a three length win from London Star at Moruya. Drawn well and can go back-to-back. ZOUWASE (4) was beaten as favourite first-up over 1435m at Moruya then raced-wide without cover over 1400m at Narrandera. Will appreciate the step up to 1600m. Stepped up to 1600m third-up here last campaign and scored a big win from Ideelic. Blinkers back on and can bounce back. PLAYFUL PUZZLE (8) won nicely at Queanbeyan two runs back before getting second on protest at Moruya. Bet: Walk The Pier to win â– â– â– â– â– LONDON STAR (6) sat second chasing Badhatharry and kept fighting to a length second at Wagga. Was bumped at the start and settled near last before running on strongly along the rails to finish second behind Walk The Pier. SABLONNEUSE (11) was a handy third in his Kembla trial and debuted with a fourth to Gooloo Bucky at Moruya. Will take improvement from the run. CLOSETHEDOORDARCY (4) has finished runner-up in three of her last five starts including a nose second to Chebici at Queanbeyan. Her two recent failures have been on heavy tracks. Bet: London Star to win â– â– â– â– â– MISS STALWART (7) ran home strongly to beat Tom Cruising here on June 8 then got a long way back and made up some ground when ninth to Donwon at Moruya. Came from a clear last when fifth to all-the-way winner Pretty Vegas and Tonkatsu Goddess at Goulburn last start. CAPITAL HEART (3) was a length-and-a-half third to Donwon at Moruya two starts back but was disappointing in beating just one home behind Your Not The Boss there last start. Drops back in grade. EPAULLO CREED (2) has placed two of his last three. Up in grade but drops 4kg on his last start nose second to East Harlem. â– â– â– â– â– BROOKLYN LIGHTS (1) rolled along in front and just faded in the straight but wasn't disgraced when fifth behind Fleeting Spirit on debut on the Kensington on March 26. Returns from a spell after two nice trials behind Bandi's Boy and Cambar. THE MAIN EVENT (3) returned from a long spell with a string closing run from last of 12 on the corner to finish a three-quarter length second to Sir Franklin over 1010m at Moruya on July 11. Step up to 1200m suits and drawn to settle closer. TEXAN STAR (3) was on debut when coming from the send half of the field to finish third to Sir Franklin. Will be prominent again.
