
Wimbledon's top strawberry faces juicy competition
It may be the top seed at Wimbledon but even the reigning king of strawberries knows the crown sits lightly.
The Malling Centenary berry has reigned supreme since being introduced at The Championships in 2016, sweetening summer rituals and picnics alike at the All England Club.
Yet in the fields and labs, a new crop of challengers is ripening. In the high-stakes world of soft fruit supremacy, flavour, firmness and fame are all up for grabs.
The Malling Centenary variety is known for its sweetness, "heart-shaped" size, and quality of taste, according to Joe Furber, Food and Drinks Operations Manager at Wimbledon.
Weeks of sunshine and a "bumper crop" in the UK have helped produce an excess of strawberries, meaning Furber expects around 2.5 million of them, or 5,000 tonnes, alongside 13,000 litres of cream to be consumed during the Wimbledon fortnight.
This year, a portion of 10 Malling Centenary strawberries with cream costs two pounds and seventy pence after the first price increase (20 pence) since 2010.
The strawberries are grown in polytunnels by Hugh Lowe Farms, a family-owned business in Kent, just 31 miles from the All England Club, picked and delivered each morning at 8.30am.
"Their best time aligns perfectly with the championships, which is quite fortuitous, which is a big part of why they were chosen," Furber said.
But like every champion, it cannot afford to rest on its laurels as contenders lurk to seize the strawberry crown.
The Summer Berry Company, based at Groves Farm near Chichester, told Reuters the variety landscape is becoming increasingly competitive and that it has reduced its production of Malling Centenary over the years.
"I love Malling Centenary, I'm in no way saying it's a bad variety. I'm just saying that there's a new generation of varieties we're bringing to the market," commercial director Jack Darnes said.
Summer Berry, which uses robotics and artificial intelligence technology to help with the harvesting process, grows varieties including Fandango, Karima and Florice, which Darnes said are larger and sweeter.
"With Malling Centenary three or four days later they're still okay, with the new varieties you can survive even longer — six to seven days. So it's reducing waste, it's a better product for the end consumer," he said.
"We hope one day there's going to be a new summer berry variety that people at Wimbledon are going to be consuming even better than Malling Centenary."
The UK produces 120,000 tonnes of strawberries each year, generating retail sales of up to 700 million pounds, said Darnes.

The US dollar edged lower as uncertainty over the Senate's push to pass President Donald Trump's fiscal and spending plan weighed on sentiment, driving investors to diversify amid internal party splits. Trump's recent criticism of the Federal Reserve and its chief, Jerome Powell, added pressure on the dollar, fuelling worries about the US central bank's independence and credibility. Dollar weakness lifted Asian currencies, with the Malaysian ringgit up 0.5% at its highest level since October 2. The Philippine peso inched up 0.1%, while the Indonesian rupiah added 0.3%. Meanwhile, the Singapore dollar was hovering near its highest level since October 2014. With the July 9 US tariff deadline approaching, investors are bracing for fallout as trade talks with its partners yield little progress. 'Overall, Asian currencies could continue to climb in the backdrop of Fed cuts, benign oil prices, USD, and a stable China (improving June PMIs),' Lim added. Oil rises on signs of strong demand
NEW YORK: Oil prices edged higher on Tuesday as investors took stock of positive demand indicators, while also treading cautiously ahead of an OPEC+ meeting to decide the group's August output policy. Brent crude was up 18 cents, or 0.3%, to $66.92 a barrel at 11:36 a.m. ET (1536 GMT), while US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 27 cents, or around 0.4%, to $65.38 a barrel. The gains were likely due to supportive data from a private-sector survey in China, which showed factory activity returned to expansion in June, said Randall Rothenberg, risk intelligence expert at US oil brokerage Liquidity Energy. Expectations that Saudi Arabia will raise its August crude oil prices for buyers in Asia to a four-month high, and firm premiums for Russian ESPO Blend crude oil, were also supporting the notion of robust demand, Rothenberg said. Meanwhile, oil's gains were kept in check by expectations that the OPEC+ group will raise its August crude oil output by an amount similar to the outsized hikes agreed in May, June, and July. Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week that the group plans to raise output by 411,000 bpd next month when it meets on July 6. 'All eyes will be on OPEC+'s decision over the weekend, when the group is expected to add another 411,000 bpd of production in an effort to gain more market share, primarily over the US shale producers,' StoneX energy analyst Alex Hodes wrote to clients. Besides gaining market share from US shale producers, which pumped oil at a record pace in April according to official data released on Monday, the group has also been trying to punish overproducing members. OPEC+ member Kazakhstan, one of world's 10 largest oil producers, raised oil production last month to match an all-time high, a source familiar with the data told Reuters on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia, the de facto leader of the OPEC+ group, raised its June crude oil exports to the fastest rate in a year, data from Kpler showed. 'These exports are flooding out even faster than the OPEC+ deal implies during the summer when peak domestic demand typically keeps oil supplies closer to home,' Hodes said. Investors are also watching trade negotiations ahead of US President Donald Trump's tariff deadline of July 9. Adani Enterprises to sell 2-5 year debt at public bond sale next week
MUMBAI: Indian billionaire Gautam Adani's flagship firm plans to raise up to 10 billion rupees ($116.77 million) through a retail bond issue opening for public subscription next week, two sources aware of the development told Reuters on Tuesday. Adani Enterprises will sell two-year, three-year and five-year bonds through the issue, which will remain open for subscription from July 9 to July 22, the sources added. The company will pay an annual coupon of 8.95% on its two-year bonds, 9.15% on three-year bonds and 9.30% on five-year bonds, and will also have an option to defer interest payment to maturity, the sources said. For investors opting for quarterly payouts, the coupon will be 8.85% on three-year and 9.00% on five-year notes, they added. Adani Enterprises did not reply to a Reuters request for comment. This marks Adani Enterprises' second retail bond sale within a year. In September 2024, it raised 8 billion rupees via its debut public issue, offering two, three, and five-year bonds at coupons of 9.25%, 9.65%, and 9.90% respectively, indicating a 30–60 basis point drop in rates across tenors this time. The proposed issue, rated AA- by Icra and Care Ratings, includes a greenshoe option of 5 billion rupees. Nuvama Wealth Management, Trust Investment Advisors and Tip Sons Consultancy Services will be the lead managers for the bond sale, the company said.
