Elderly man loses RM1.47m to online trading scam
The man, 75, who is a company director, lodged a police report in Ipoh on May 25 about the scam that began on April 15, when he received a phone call from an unidentified woman offering him to be a partner of a company trading with another company abroad, he said.
The victim agreed to become a partner after he checked the company's status and found it was operating since 1989, and was then asked to download an app called SHV Shop.
'If a customer wished to purchase an item, the victim only had to pay the selected price and would get a commission of 30 per cent,' he said in a statement last night.
The victim then paid a deposit of RM22,122 via a cash deposit machine to a Maybank account of a company.
'Thinking about his would-be profits, the victim deposited a total of RM1,470,734 from April 17 to May 16 into six different bank accounts through online transfers and bank counters,' he said, adding that the victim did not receive any returns and felt that he was scammed.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Burglar nabbed after returning to crime scene to retrieve belongings
BALIK PULAU: A man who broke into a house in Batu Maung was caught after he returned to the scene to retrieve items he had left behind. The matter came to light in a viral video posted on the Facebook account "Amigos Media Viral" this afternoon. Southwest police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said initial investigations revealed that the suspect had entered the home through the back door while the domestic helper was outside disposing of rubbish. "Upon realising the presence of the complainant, the suspect fled the scene. "However, he later returned to the house to collect belongings he had left behind. "The complainant and several friends managed to apprehend the suspect and handed him over to members of a patrol unit on duty in Batu Maung," he said in a statement. Sazalee said the suspect had been detained and would be brought to the Balik Pulau magistrate's court tomorrow for a remand application. Baby boy found abandoned at Pasir Puteh bus stop
KOTA BARU: A baby boy was found abandoned, wrapped in a sarong at a bus stop located on Jalan Lama Kulim heading towards the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority in Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, at about 1pm on Monday (Aug 4). Pasir Puteh police chief Supt Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said the baby was placed on the ground at the bus stop.
