Property tax hike row: Tiruchendur traders close down shops; threaten to repeat the agitation during temple consecration day

The Hindu17-06-2025

Protesting the steep hike in property tax, the traders downed shutters of their business establishments in this coastal town and hoisted black flags on Tuesday even as the Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru was here to inspect the ongoing preparations for the consecration of Lord Subramaniya Swami Temple to be held on July 7.
After their talks with the Tiruchendur municipality on reducing the property tax failed, the traders' associations and other organisations decided to lay siege to the urban civic body after closing down their shops on Tuesday (June 17). Barring the pharmacies, all the shops, including the shops on the temple premises, had been closed as part of the protest. The protesting traders also hoisted black flags at several places of Tiruchendur.
When the traders, as decided earlier, took-out the procession to lay siege to the Tiruchendur municipality office, they were invited to meet Mr. Nehru to air their grievance. Led by president of the struggle committee Durai Singh, the protestors held talks with the minister, who told them that the property tax had been increased as per Government Order 52.
'If the tax has been hiked in violation of this order, you can represent your case with the municipality officials and get it rectified,' Mr. Nehru said. As the protestors were dissatisfied with the minister's response, they were asked to hold talks with Regional Director of Municipal Administration Vijayalakshmi, who was also there.
When she told the traders that she would forward the traders' demand to the State Government, the protestors asked her to put on hold the property tax hike until the final decision on their demand was taken. However, Ms. Vijayalakshmi replied that the tax hike could not be suspended.
Upset over this, the traders informed the officials that they would close down their shops on July 7 when several lakhs of devotees converge at Tiruchendur for the temple consecration.
Following the traders' protest, the devotees suffered a lot on Tuesday with the hotels and the shops remain closed.
In protest against the property tax hike, th efishermen of Amali Nagar and Alanthalai struck work on Tuesday.

"Negligence, mismanagement...are inexcusable": Cong chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Jagannath Rath Yatra stampede

New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the Odisha government, following the stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra, claiming three lives on Sunday, with several injured. He said that the negligence and mismanagement that led to this tragedy are inexcusable. Sharing an X post, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote, 'I am deeply pained by the stampede during the Mahaprabhu Jagannath Rath Yatra, which claimed three lives and injured at least 50 people. This tragedy follows reports of 500 devotees being injured on Friday during the yatra. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. I wish a speedy recovery to all the injured devotees. The negligence and mismanagement that led to this tragedy are inexcusable.' He requested that the state government conduct a thorough investigation into the security lapses. He wrote, 'The State Government and authorities must conduct a thorough investigation into the grave lapses that caused this incident. Ensuring public safety and effective crowd management is paramount, especially during pre-planned festivities. Those responsible for this tragedy must be held accountable under the law.' The Congress chief added that the party is committed to providing relief and medical assistance to the affected families. 'The Congress Party stands in solidarity with the devotees and commits to supporting all efforts to provide relief, medical assistance, and aid to the affected families,' Kharge wrote on X. Earlier on Sunday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik apologised to the devotees and directed the authorities to initiate action against those responsible for the incident. Sharing an X post, CM Majhi expressed condolences and wrote, 'Due to the intense eagerness among devotees to have a glimpse of Mahaprabhu at Sharadhabali, an unfortunate incident occurred because of the resulting jostling and chaos. Personally, I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were extinguished at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to grant them the strength to bear this profound sorrow.' He added that an investigation will be conducted into the security lapse and an action will be taken against those responsible. 'This negligence is unforgivable. An immediate investigation into the security lapse will be conducted, and I have directed that necessary steps be taken to initiate exemplary action against those responsible,' the X post read. The mishap occurred early this morning near the Gundicha Temple in Puri. During the annual Rath Yatra, a massive crowd of devotees pull the holy chariots of the three deities - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra, which are taken to the Gundicha Temple, a short distance from the Jagannath Temple. The three deities spend a week at the Gundicha Temple before returning to Jagannath Temple. This year, the Rath Yatra commenced on Friday. (ANI)

Opposition boycotts high tea event on eve of Monsoon Session; calls Maharashtra Govt dishonest

The opposition parties in Maharashtra on Sunday (June 29, 2025) announced a boycott of the traditional high tea event of the State Government on the eve of the legislature's Monsoon Session citing rampant corruption, unpopular policies and misuse of funds. Confirming the development, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve of the Shiv Sena (UBT) said the boycott is a mark of protest against a "dishonest Government". "From the forced implementation of the Shaktipeeth Expressway to the failure to provide buses to MSRTC, non-payment of dues to private contractors, and injustice in the Vaishali Hagawane [dowry harassment-suicide] case in Pune, this Government has lost the moral right to seek cooperation. Why should we meet the government that is imposing a third language [Hindi] on Standard I," he said. His colleague and former Minister Aaditya Thackeray attacked the Mahayuti government of Devendra Fadnavis for corruption in school admissions. "The first list for 11th standard admissions appears to be tainted with corruption. There is reason to believe that school education minister Dada Bhuse may be involved," he alleged. Mr. Thackeray also slammed the State Government for "tacitly backing" the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which he claimed was imposing "unjust" fines to the tune of ₹12.50 crore on motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The driver of Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena Lok Sabha MP Sandipan Bhumre has received a huge parcel of land from the descendants of the erstwhile royal Salar Jung family of Hyderabad, which raises suspicion of irregular land deals, Mr. Thackeray further alleged. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar pointed out to former BJP Minister Babanrao Lonikar's objectionable statements at a gathering. Mr. Lonikar had slammed critics of the BJP-led government by claiming the clothes they were wearing and other amenities they were enjoying in life have been handed down to them by the ruling party. "This government is indifferent to people's problems. The three constituents of the Mahayuti are fighting among themselves for funds and to expand their influence. They are more concerned with siphoning off public resources," Mr. Wadettiwar alleged. The Mahayuti comprises the BJP, Mr. Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party. The Congress leader also pointed out to the "inflated cost" of infrastructure projects in the State, citing the cancellation of tenders for a tunnel and road project in Thane-Ghodbunder-Bhayander route after the matter reached the Supreme Court. The MMRDA, which is helming the project, also announced a reduction in the cost of the project subsequently. "Why was the cost inflated in the first place? The intention was to misuse the money to possibly buy MLAs or for other nefarious purposes," he alleged.
