In a step that could bolster the U.S.'s hypersonic weapons push, the Pentagon on Monday confirmed the second successful test of a reusable hypersonic vehicle in March, just three months after the first trial.
The test marked the country's first return to reusable hypersonic flight testing since the end of the manned X-15 program in 1968.
The revelation comes just days after the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced it had successfully demonstrated an end-to-end hypersonic flight test using a sea-based cold-gas launch system from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on April 25.
Milestone tests
The Stratolaunch Talon-A hypersonic vehicle was launched mid-air from the Roc carrier aircraft, flew over the Pacific Ocean, and exceeded speeds of Mach 5 before safely landing at Vandenberg Space Force Base.
These milestone tests were conducted under the Test Resource Management Center's (TRMC) Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed (MACH-TB) initiative.
Stratolaunch, a California-based aerospace firm, developed the Talon-A test vehicle. Its first successful flight in December 2024 was not publicly disclosed until now. Roc—the world's largest aircraft with a twin fuselage—served as the launch platform for the Talon-A hypersonic vehicle.
"Demonstrating the reuse of fully recoverable hypersonic test vehicles is an important milestone for MACH-TB. Lessons learned from this test campaign will help us reduce vehicle turnaround time from months down to weeks," said George Rumford, Director of the TRMC.
Reusable design saves costs
Unlike conventional single-use rockets, the reusable craft can be quickly redeployed at a lower cost, accelerating the development of next-generation weapons that fly at several times the speed of sound, reducing adversaries' response time, and bypassing traditional defenses.
MACH-TB aims to accelerate the delivery of advanced hypersonic capabilities by enabling the Department of Defense (DoD), other federal agencies, industry, and academia to conduct affordable and rapid hypersonic experiments and test system components.
NSWC Crane awarded the MACH-TB contract to Leidos on behalf of the TRMC. Leidos, as the prime contractor, then awarded a competitive contract to Stratolaunch to provide flight test services for the program.
'With the data collected from this second flight, we are able to apply lessons learned to enhance the strength and performance of the Talon-A vehicles. While the team needs to complete its data review of flight two, the first flight review confirmed the robustness of the Talon-A design while demonstrating the ability to meet the full range of performance capabilities desired by our customers,' said Dr. Zachary Krevor, President and CEO of Stratolaunch said in a release.
'We've now demonstrated hypersonic speed, added the complexity of a full runway landing with prompt payload recovery, and proven reusability. Both flights were great achievements for our country, our company, and our partners,' he added.
The Talon-A test vehicle will help develop hypersonic weapons by allowing engineers to test engines, sensors, and communication systems aboard its reusable platform.
The vehicle is powered by a Hadley liquid rocket engine built by startup Ursa Major.
Hypersonic weapons fly in the upper atmosphere at speeds above Mach 5, or over 6,200 km (3,850 miles) per hour.
U.S. defense giants like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and RTX are all advancing their hypersonic programs. Contractors are also investing in systems to detect and defend against these fast-moving threats.
The test comes as the United States intensifies its efforts to build hypersonic capabilities, joining Russia and China in a growing global race to master the technology.
Russia has reportedly used hypersonic missiles in Ukraine, while China has denied testing such weapons, despite U.S. military claims.

Home Depot Stock (NYSE:HD) Gains on New Advertiser Partnerships

The trend of retailers like home improvement giant Home Depot (HD) starting their own media network is on the rise, and not without reason. After all, shoppers in a store are a captive audience looking for a certain kind of product, so advertising that product in-store is a great way to narrow the gap between ad contact and purchase. Home Depot, meanwhile, is stepping up its own media network operations with a new partnership, and investors were reasonably pleased with this comparatively simple move. Shares were up modestly in Friday afternoon's trading. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Home Depot got together with Yahoo, now mostly owned by Apollo Global Management (APO), to help bolster the range of advertisers that can get in on the Orange Apron Media network, Home Depot's own media network. Home Depot has had a media network since 2018, reports noted, but it has only been Orange Apron since March 2024. In fact, current reports suggest that Orange Apron is the largest home improvement operation of its class. Recently, Home Depot branched out its media operations, looking to get products that do not necessarily sell within the retailer itself, but are adjacent. So instead of looking only at advertisers that sell tools or patio furniture, Home Depot is also taking ads from home security services or insurance providers. And the partnership with Yahoo opens up access to Yahoo ConnectID, a Demand Side Platform (DSP) that allows for better matching between users and potential products. Still a Leader Word from the Numerator Home Improvement Tracker report, which we have heard from previously, says that Home Depot is still a powerhouse in the market. In fact, Home Depot has 28% of the market to itself. The next highest portion of that market is Lowe's (LOW), which comes in at 18%. As for what shoppers at Home Depot are most in the market for, the leader is home improvement power tools, followed closely by outdoor power equipment like lawn mowers. Despite the sheer number of options in this field, the fact that Home Depot has as much of the market as it does suggests that it offers a unique experience that keeps shoppers coming back. Is Home Depot a Good Long-Term Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on HD stock based on 18 Buys and six Holds assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 3.4% rally in its share price over the past year, the average HD price target of $428.12 per share implies 15% upside potential.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro: Revised Leak Reveals Unprecedented Design Secret

The next iPhones are less than a month away. A recent report that seemed to relate to the iPhone 17 Air has now been updated to indicate that no, it's about the iPhone 17 Pro, after all. But there's something much more interesting hiding in the shadows of the new story. You can read my original story here, but the new update includes something that no iPhone has ever had before: different battery sizes for the iPhone based on where it will be sold. The news came from prolific leaker Majin Bu, who perhaps spoke too soon with their latest leak, which claimed to show the battery for the upcoming slim phone, nicknamed the iPhone 17 Air. They've now had to correct what they said. 'Due to a miscommunication with my source, the information I reported yesterday is incorrect,' Majin Bu has now admitted on X. Instead, they're directing readers to their latest post. In a scorched-earth policy, the original post now links instead to one headlined 'iPhone 17 Pro: Unveiling the New Battery with Steel Case,' which reveals that the information was referring to quite a different phone, the iPhone 17 Pro. The new post does not mention the mistake and indeed the word Air never appears in the story. Some of the new story is similar to the original except there's no longer any reference to the capacity of the new battery. Instead, there's an arguably much more interesting: that the L-shaped battery will come in two different versions. As you will know, U.S. iPhones no longer have physical SIM card trays. Until now, that extra real estate has been filled by a spacer. According to this updated report, for the very first time, Apple will make two different iPhone batteries: one for the U.S. market and a smaller one for international territories (which Majin Bu refers to as the Chinese version, though it's not thought that the eSIM only option for U.S. iPhones is about to be replicated anywhere else. 'The version for the U.S. market is wider, designed without the need to accommodate a physical SIM. This layout maximizes internal space, with a battery extended in width for optimized capacity without compromises,' the new report says. Which means, you've got it, U.S. iPhones could have longer battery life than other countries' models. By how much, we don't know, but every extra bit of battery size is to be welcomed.

According to analyst Omar Dessouky of BofA Securities, the RBLX stock has nearly doubled in value since the debut of GAG. The analyst states that GAG's performance shows that the Roblox platform can yield industry-leading KPIs for developers and generate several hits. Additionally, according to BofA Securities, the majority of investors they interviewed had been Roblox enthusiasts for at least two years, indicating that speculative newcomers were not the main force behind the most recent stock boom. Roblox Corporation (NYSE:RBLX) is a video game developer based in California. With 2.9 million developers, 6 million active experiences, and 88.9 million active users per day, Roblox Corporation (NYSE:RBLX) extends beyond the traditional definition of a video game by combining its digital currency and offering an extensive range of unique virtual experiences.
