Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid tariff deadline concerns

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by cautious optimism ahead of the looming Aug 1 tariff deadline. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is likely to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 today as markets remain wary of potential tariff impacts. 'Investors are adopting a guarded stance, waiting for clearer signals on trade policies,' he noted. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes attributed the ringgit's early gains to shifting macroeconomic conditions. 'The US dollar is under pressure from falling Treasury yields and domestic political concerns, which is benefiting emerging market currencies like the ringgit,' he said. Innes added that the ringgit's rebound reflects more than just a temporary bounce. 'A softer dollar, renewed trade talks, and hopes for tariff relief are creating a favourable environment for the ringgit,' he told Bernama. He also highlighted ongoing negotiations between Malaysia and the US, where Malaysian officials are reportedly seeking a reduced tariff rate of 15–20 per cent, compared to the proposed 25 per cent. Against other major currencies, the ringgit showed mixed performance. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8767/8891 from 2.8690/8739 and dipped versus the euro to 4.9528/9740 from 4.9512/9594. However, it edged higher against the British pound, rising to 5.7052/7295 from 5.7088/7183. Regionally, the ringgit strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.3001/3144 from 3.3011/3071 and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.7 from 259.1/259.7. It also gained slightly against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.43 from 7.41/7.43. Kuching-Pontianak Direct Route Provides Flexibility, Convenience For Travellers
KUCHING, July 26 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the Kuching-Pontianak route, scheduled to commence on Sept 12 and operate twice daily, would provide greater flexibility and convenience for travellers from both sides of the border. 'I wish to first extend my sincere apologies for not being able to attend today's very special event. 'Nonetheless, I am truly delighted and would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Sarawak Tourism Board for the successful organisation of the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak,' he said in the message. Air Asia Malaysia announced the launch of the two new direct routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, to become the only airline operating international flights to the West Kalimantan capital city. In a statement today, the airline said the new routes were unveiled during the Sarawak Travel Fair, organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board in Pontianak, and officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan.

Sara recipients can shop at over 470 premises in Sabah

RANAU: A total of 470 supermarket and grocery premises in Sabah are now part of the 4,152 nationwide outlets where Sara recipients can use their MyKad to purchase basic necessities. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said his Ministry is also exploring ways for the Sara aid to be used at Rahmah Madani Sales programmes (PJRM), especially in remote areas. As of July this year, RM410 million has been channelled to 830,000 STR recipients in Sabah, while RM500 million has reached 506,000 Sara recipients. Armizan, who is also Papar MP, announced this during the KPDN Carnival Tour and Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign 2025 for the Sabah Zone, held here from July 25 to 27. KPDN Proposes Broader Access To Essential Items For SARA Aid Recipients
RANAU, July 26 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will collaborate with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to expand access to essential items for recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said KPDN had proposed that recipients be allowed to use their SARA aid at mobile Jualan Rahmah MADANI Programme (PJRM) locations, in addition to existing participating retailers. He said, at present, recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid could only purchase basic items at 4,152 participating supermarkets and retail outlets across the country, including 470 in Sabah. 'This initiative enables SARA recipients, particularly in rural and interior areas, to use the aid credited to their MyKad to make purchases at mobile PJRM locations,' he told reporters after launching the Sabah Zone KPDN Carnival 2025 here tonight. Armizan said the additional RM300 million allocation for PJRM would enable KPDN to increase its frequency nationwide, with a target of 20,000 series throughout this year. 'For Sabah, KPDN is targeting 2,276 PJRM series throughout this year, and as of July 26, a total of 1,089 have already been implemented. We will adopt several approaches to ensure the target is achieved by year-end,' he said. He said the approaches included increasing the range of items offered and enhancing cooperation with strategic retail partners. 'Through these improvements, the people will have more choices. The ministry can no longer act alone as it did in the past. For example, today's PJRM is carried out in collaboration with retail partners,' he explained. Commenting on today's programme, this was the second year KPDN had implemented the programme, adding that six carnival tours would be held across the country this year.
