Arsenal signs Swedish international Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal on Saturday announced the signing of Swedish international striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. The 27-year-old, who fired Sporting to the Portuguese title last season with 39 goals and netted a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, is reported to have signed a five-year deal in a transfer worth £55 million (62.9m euros). This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyökeres is a Gunner ✊ Narrated by Kojey Radical 🎙️ — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 26, 2025 Gyokeres' transfer, which could end up costing the north London club as much as £64m with performance-related add-ons, takes Arsenal's close-season spending to the region of £200m. He becomes Mikel Arteta's sixth summer signing and follows defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10m) and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in moving to the Emirates. Arsenal confirmed the news with a brief post on X which read: 'This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyokeres is a Gunner.' Gyokeres will be expected to meet up with his new team-mates in Arsenal's ongoing pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong. The Gunners face Newcastle in the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday ahead of the concluding game of their tour, against Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31. Gyokeres moved to Brighton from Swedish side Brommapojkarna in January 2018, but spent time on loan at St Pauli and then Swansea and Coventry, before making a permanent move to the Sky Blues in July 2021. After Coventry were beaten on penalties by Luton in the 2023 Championship final at Wembley, Gyokeres completed a £20.5m switch to Sporting. He scored a remarkable 97 goals in 102 matches for the Portuguese side. Arsenal spent the concluding months of last season without a recognised striker following long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. Even before then, Arsenal were in desperate need of a reliable scorer, and Arteta will hope his new signing can fire him to his first silverware since he won the FA Cup in 2020, and end the club's two-decade wait for a Premier League title. Arsenal's new sporting director, Andrea Berta has wasted little time in strengthening a squad which has finished runners-up in the league for the past three seasons. Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also put pen to paper on new contracts in the off-season, with a long-term extension for teenager Ethan Nwaneri believed to be all but completed. FC Barcelona likely to make decision on Marc-Andre ter Stegen's captaincy after Joan Gamper Trophy

The ongoing saga surrounding Marc-Andre ter Stegen's captaincy at FC Barcelona has captured the attention of fans. As the club prepares for the 2025-26 La Liga season, tensions between the German goalkeeper and the Barcelona hierarchy have escalated, putting his role as captain under intense scrutiny. The crucial decision is set to be made after the Joan Gamper Trophy. The rift between Marc-Andre ter Stegen and FC Barcelona stemmed from a series of events that have challenged the goalkeeper's standing within the club. The 33-year-old, who has been an important part of Barcelona's defense since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, announced he would undergo back surgery, sidelining him for an estimated three months. This timeline, however, has caused friction, as La Liga regulations require a minimum four-month absence to classify an injury as long-term, allowing the club to use 80% of ter Stegen's salary to register new signing Joan Garcia. The club's medical staff countered, estimating a recovery period of four to five months, highlighting a discrepancy that has fueled internal discord. Marc-Andre ter Stegen's public statement about his injury and recovery timeline has been perceived by some within the club as prioritizing personal interests over the team's needs. This sentiment has led to growing calls to strip him of the captaincy. Barcelona's captaincy is traditionally decided through a squad vote following the Joan Gamper Trophy, a pre-season match that marks the symbolic start of the season. However, speculation is that head coach Hansi Flick may face pressure from club officials to intervene and remove the armband from ter Stegen directly, bypassing the usual democratic process. Several factors contribute to this debate. Firstly, ter Stegen's absence at the start of the season due to his surgery means he will likely miss the Joan Gamper Trophy, where the captain traditionally addresses the fans. Second captain Ronald Araujo is expected to take on this role, potentially signaling a shift in leadership dynamics. Moreover, with Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny ahead of him in the pecking order, ter Stegen faces the prospect of being the third-choice goalkeeper, a position deemed incompatible with the captaincy by some board members. Since joining Barcelona, ter Stegen has won 19 trophies, including six La Liga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League. Named captain in August 2024 following Sergi Roberto's departure, his leadership was tested last season when a severe knee injury sidelined him from September to May. Despite retaining the armband during his recovery, his return was marred by public frustration with the club and a refusal to accept a reduced role, creating tension with Flick.

English Premier League clubs splurge £1.63bn in current transfer window; Liverpool biggest spenders, Arsenal third, Manchester United fourth

From the start of June — when the transfer window opened — until now, English Premier League clubs have collectively spent £1.63 billion on players, a BBC report revealed. Citing data from Transfermarkt, the report added that the last season's top four teams are five of the biggest spenders heading into the new season. Manchester United, who finished a lowly 15th, are the only team from the bottom half who are in the top five, ahead of their bitter rivals Manchester City. Out of the £1.63 billion, a little more than £1 billion was spent by just six teams — Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, in that order. After winning the league last season by 10 points, Liverpool haven't wasted time on bolstering their squad. They are comfortably ahead in the spending spree and have shelled out £269 million so far in the current transfer window. That isn't surprising after they signed German international Florian Wirtz for a staggering £116 million and France forward Hugo Ekitike for £69 million, which could rise to £79 million, as per the report. They have also spent £40.8 million on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and £35 million on Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Fresh from the Club World Cup title, Chelsea — who finished fourth in the league last season — have spent £212 million so far. Their biggest spending has been on forward Joao Pedro, who was signed for £60 million from Brighton, and Jamie Gittens, the Borussia Dortmund left-winger, for £56 million. After finishing second in each of the last three seasons, Arsenal have shored up their attack with the signing of striker Victor Gyokeres for £63.5 million. Their other major buys have been Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million and former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke for £48.5 million. Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, is leaving no stone unturned after Manchester United suffered their worst campaign in the Premier League era last season and have spent more than City. United have splurged £133.5 million so far, of which £65 million was spent on Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Brazilian Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million. Manchester City, meanwhile, have spent about £127 million. Most of it has been on Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki.
