Raúl Jiménez honored late ex-teammate Diogo Jota after his goal in the first half of the Gold Cup final on Sunday.
After Mexico fell behind to the U.S. early courtesy of Chris Richards' goal from a free kick in the fourth minute, El Tri dominated possession.
With some nice buildup on the left side of the pitch, Marcel Ruiz was able to find the Fulham striker, who delivered a quick, powerful shot to tie the match in the 27th minute.
Shortly after the goal, Jiménez displayed a customized Mexico jersey with Jota's name on the back, along with doing his signature video game celebration.
Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, were both killed in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.
Jiménez and Jota were teammates together at Wolves for two seasons.
After the news of Jota's death, Jiménez posted a tribute to the Portugal international on Instagram.
"It's hard to receive this kind of news and I still can't believe it," he said. "An excellent teammate, friend, and above all, a great father. Thank you for everything, my friend — we'll always remember you. A hug to heaven. R.I.P."

Gold Cup Final: Why Is Christian Pulisic Not Playing For the USMNT Vs. Mexico?

Gold Cup Final: Why Is Christian Pulisic Not Playing For the USMNT Vs. Mexico? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the USMNT will play Mexico in the 2025 Gold Cup final, one name is noticeably missing from the squad sheet: Christian Pulisic. The team's longtime captain and attacking engine is not only absent from the starting XI — he hasn't featured in the tournament at all. Advertisement Pulisic's absence has fueled plenty of discussion online, especially given the rise of young stars like Diego Luna - who's wearing the number 10 in Pulisic's absence. While the U.S. has performed well without him, maintaining the unbeaten status through the group phase and playoffs, many fans expected Pulisic to be present for a title-deciding match against their biggest rival. Pulisic voluntarily opted out of the tournament — he wasn't injured or overlooked by the coaching staff. According to U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker, it was a joint decision driven by workload concerns after a grueling club season. 'Christian and his team approached the Federation … given the amount of matches he has played in the past two years with very little break … we made the collective decision that this is the right moment for him to get the rest he needs.' - Cooker explained. Pulisic played 49 matches for AC Milan this season and also dealt with a chronic hip-flexor issue. The decision was made to ensure he's fully refreshed ahead of the World Cup qualifiers and the 2026 tournament. Advertisement Pulisic has also addressed public criticism, calling some of it 'way out of line.' He noted that he actually requested to play in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, but head coach Mauricio Pochettino preferred to keep the same group that would feature in the tournament. Pochettino later reinforced that players 'can't dictate the plan' and that roster management decisions are based on the full season and long-term goals. Sergiño Dest is also out of the tournament Sergiño Dest was expected to be a key figure for the U.S. Men's National Team heading into the 2025 Gold Cup—only for his name to be left off the final 26-man roster. Advertisement Dest had only recently returned to action in March after recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in April 2024. He managed seven appearances for PSV leading up to the tournament, but none of them were full 90-minute performances. According to USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the decision to leave Dest off the Gold Cup roster was made after consultation with the team's medical and performance staff. 'The technical, medical and high performance staffs … determined the best decision is for [Dest] to have an individualized training program for the summer so he can focus on being fully recovered and ready to perform next season.' - Pochettino explained. Handball Controversy: Why Didn't the Referee Award a Penalty For The USMNT Vs Mexico?

Handball Controversy: Why Didn't the Referee Award a Penalty For The USMNT Vs Mexico? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USMNT suffered a 2-1 loss to Mexico in the 2025 Gold Cup Final, but some fans believe the team lost unfairly. A controversial play in the second half has USMNT fans puzzled and angry that the referee did not call. Advertisement In the 66th minute, Mexico's Jorge Sanchez tackled Max Arfsten in the box and then touched the ball with his hand onto the ground. The referee did not award the USMNT a penalty for a handball, and many call it a controversial play that could've changed the outcome of the match. The referee, Mario Alberto Escobar Toca, was not called by VAR to check a replay of the controversial play. Despite many USMNT fans complaining about the handball, a former referee justifies why Mario Escobar did not call a penalty. Former Referee Agrees with No Penalty Decision Former FIFA referee Fernando Guerrero Ramírez gave his opinion on the handball in the Gold Cup final and believes the referee made a great judgment in not calling a penalty for Team USA. Fernando Guerrero Ramírez: "Great judgment by Mario Escobar in not calling a penalty for Sanchez's handball from the Mexican national team. He plays the ball and then, while falling, touches the ball with his hand unintentionally." What makes it hard for USMNT fans is that the play occurred when the game was tied 1-1. Just ten minutes later, Mexico scored the winner to win the Gold Cup. Advertisement The USMNT lost their first competitive match against Mexico since 2019, in the 2019 Gold Cup Final, which finished in a 1-0 win for the Mexicans. USA 1-2 Mexico (Mexico Gold Cup Champions) The USMNT had a dream start to the Gold Cup final as they scored in the first four minutes of the game. From a set piece, Sebastian Berhalter sent a perfect cross in the box. Chris Richards headed the ball over Mexico's Luis Malagon to score the opener. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced past the line, and goal-line technology helped the referee confirm the goal. After the opener, Mexico pressured the USMNT with great chances in front of the goal. Advertisement Mexico's pressure finally prevailed as Marcel Ruiz delivered a great through ball for Raul Jimenez, who smashed the ball past Matt Freese. USA and Mexico were drawing 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, Mexico continued to pile on the pressure with more chances. The USMNT had chances as well, but couldn't convert. Mexico's second goal arrived from a set piece as Edson Alvarez headed the ball into the net. At first, the goal was ruled offside, but VAR checked Alvarez's position and found that the West Ham United midfielder was onside. The goal was given, and Mexico took the lead. The goal ended up being the winner for Mexico, and they won back-to-back Gold Cups.
