Jimenez honors late ex-teammate Jota after Gold Cup final goal
After Mexico fell behind to the U.S. early courtesy of Chris Richards' goal from a free kick in the fourth minute, El Tri dominated possession.
With some nice buildup on the left side of the pitch, Marcel Ruiz was able to find the Fulham striker, who delivered a quick, powerful shot to tie the match in the 27th minute.
Shortly after the goal, Jiménez displayed a customized Mexico jersey with Jota's name on the back, along with doing his signature video game celebration.
Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, were both killed in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.
Jiménez and Jota were teammates together at Wolves for two seasons.
After the news of Jota's death, Jiménez posted a tribute to the Portugal international on Instagram.
"It's hard to receive this kind of news and I still can't believe it," he said. "An excellent teammate, friend, and above all, a great father. Thank you for everything, my friend — we'll always remember you. A hug to heaven. R.I.P."
