Shamal reveal plans for "Urban Oasis" at historic Dubai Zoo site

Time Out Dubai18-06-2025

The site of the historic Dubai Zoo is being converted into a low-rise development that honours its legacy.
The Dubai Zoo shut its doors in 2017, with all the animals moving to Dubai Safari Park, and was considered something of a landmark in the emirate.
Located in Jumeirah, the Dubai Zoo was originally built in 1967 and was home to more than 100 species of animals.
And now, investment firm Shamal is building a residential and lifestyle destination which has been inspired by the organic clusters and greenery that was once the Dubai Zoo.
The new development will prioritise walkability and open green space, including shared courtyards, a large central park and preserved mature trees.
The new space will respect the legacy of the old landmark through organic architecture, sustainable landscaping and community-led design.
Plans include an array of amenities for the eventual residents, including courtyards and a club house, a wellness area, a dedicated children's play area, a family pool, lounge and gym.

The 'Urban Oasis' will be made up of 90 meticulously designed residential units that blend in with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Executive Officer at Shamal, explained the plans to honour the site of the old zoo.
He said: 'This is more than a redevelopment; it is a profound reimagining of a beloved landmark that holds deep connections for countless individuals and the wider community.
'At Shamal, we aspire to deliver the extraordinary – not through scale alone, but through intention, care, and design that speaks to the soul of the city.
'Our vision is to respectfully honour the site's rich past and curate a progressive space for modern living.
'It is designed for people to live, connect, and thrive, fostering a personal, calm, and grounded lifestyle that blends heritage with the present.'

DXB Lab will partner with Shamal on the architecture of the site. Khalid Al Najjar of DXB Lab explained the design process of the old landmark.
He said: 'Our design process began with a deep exploration of the site's history and natural character.
'We were inspired by the organic clusters and greenery that once defined the Dubai Zoo, and we translated those elements into a geometric architectural language that feels both rooted and forward-looking.
'This project is a tribute to Jumeirah's legacy – an environment where memory and modernity coexist.'

Steaks could cost more on weekend if dynamic pricing becomes normal practice, Ivy restaurant chief says

Steaks could cost more expensive on weekends if dynamic pricing becomes normal practice, the chief of the Ivy restaurant chain has warned. Jeremy King, who runs the dozens of Ivy restaurants across the country, said that while he was personally 'really uncomfortable' with the practice, he admitted it was 'fair' for restaurants to sell tables to customers willing to spend a certain amount of money. Dynamic pricing is the practice of changing the cost of a product or service depending on demand. It came under fire after Oasis tickets were sold under the practice, leading to a slew of complaints from customers who felt they were overcharged. King, 71, told the Go To Food podcast: 'I don't begrudge the restaurants, for instance, which are using the apps to sell tables in advance because they've got fed up with people who book months in advance and then spend the entire meal taking photographs of themselves and of the food, ordering the absolute minimum they can just so they can put it on social media. 'So hold the tables back and those restaurants that say if you're willing to pay £200 we have a table for you on a Saturday, I think that's fair. 'I don't like the encroaching dynamic pricing whereby your steak is going to cost more on a Saturday night than it is on a Monday night, that makes me really uncomfortable but that's coming through. We've already seen it in the theatre.' Earlier this year, King gave diners who went to two of his restaurants, Arlington and The Park, a 25% discount if they ate after 9pm in order to encourage later dining times. In February, Disney came under fire after it said that tickets to its American theme parks would jump with demand under a new dynamic pricing plan. Currently, entry to Walt Disney World in Orlando and Disneyland near LA is priced based on pre-set peak and off-peak dates. Under the expected plan—already rolled out at Disneyland Paris—ticket prices at the US parks will fluctuate in real-time based on demand. The new scheme —which would cause huge variations in price —could be introduced by the the end of March, Richard Greenfield of closely-watched Wall Street researchers Lightshed Partners said on Friday. Disney fan Jasmin Guevara, who lives in LA and regularly visits Disneyland in nearby Anaheim, said: 'Does Disney have no shame? 'It has jacked up prices time and time again in the past few years. This will just be another way to squeeze even more money out of me and my family.' Greenfield, respected investor and analyst, explained the timing. He wrote: 'Given the early success of Disneyland Paris' pricing strategy shift, we expect Disney to announce it is moving to a similar airline-style, dynamic pricing plan in the US later in Q1 2025.'

Definitely Tradies? Gallagher Brothers' reprising former careers

In the early days, the famous pair were set to follow in their father's footsteps and become tradespeople before their band took off. Now, new pictures released today by leading home improvement platform, Checkatrade, seem to show 'Liam and Noel' rolling back the years to do a spot of plastering, painting and decorating. Many have been left wondering 'is it really them?' - but it is in fact two of the UK's leading Liam and Noel lookalikes offering a tongue-in-cheek glimpse into what life might have looked like if the band hadn't taken off and the front men had instead carried on as concrete finishers. With all their unique swagger and style intact, of course. Brits across the nation have been left wonder(wall)ing why the Gallagher brothers appear to have stepped away from the limelight of their upcoming tour to reprise their former jobs as tradespeople. (Image: Andrew Hasson/ MI /Content Cover) As the UK's most popular platform for trusted tradespeople, Checkatrade is shining a spotlight on the earning potential for skilled trades. While the Gallagher brothers famously swapped steel-toed boots for stadiums, many who stick with trade skills are now enjoying strong job security and the flexibility to work on their own terms. New figures from Checkatrade show that the average UK tradesperson now earns over £45,000 a year, putting them in the top 25% of earners in the country. Meanwhile, 13% of tradespeople now take home more than £100,000 - a true rock star salary! Decorators were found to be the highest earners, on average pocketing £61,000 a year. What's more, Checkatrade's recent 'Trade Skills Index' found that the home improvement and repair sector is set to grow 40% over the next ten years, contributing 2.4% to the UK's GDP, meaning there's ample opportunities for aspiring tradies. In the images, 'Noel' can be seen wielding a paint roller instead of his famous guitar - paint-rollering with it, some might say. Brother 'Liam' can be seen looking smug about his freshly painted wonder(ful) wall - perhaps recreating the original inspiration for the smash hit. In another shot, the brothers are seen enjoying a well-deserved break - with their customers no doubt hoping it will be shorter than the 16-year break they took from the band. But rather than cigarettes and alcohol, 'Liam' enjoys a cuppa and a biscuit, after a hard morning of work on a Lion and Leinster home improvement job site. To further mark the occasion, Checkatrade has revealed the top ten songs Oasis could have instead created if they took more artistic inspiration from their early careers: Whether you're looking for your next trusted professional — or considering a career that rocks — head to to find out more. A Checkatrade Spokesperson said: 'While we had fun with this tongue-in-cheek shoot showing what their lives might have looked like, it comes with a very real message: a career in the trades can be incredibly rewarding. With strong earning potential, flexibility, and long-term job security, tradespeople across the UK are building rock-solid futures doing work they're proud of.'
