Kate Nash says she would love to collaborate with Kneecap

BreakingNews.ie2 days ago
Singer Kate Nash has said she would love to collaborate with Kneecap and added that it 'is really important' the band are using their platform for a political purpose.
It came after police said on Saturday that they are assessing videos of comments made by the Belfast rap trio, as well as punk duo Bob Vylan, during their performances at the Glastonbury Festival.

The group are known for their provocative lyrics and merchandise, as well as their championing of the Irish language and support for Palestine.
'I love Kneecap. I'd love to collaborate. I love collaboration, actually,' Nash told the PA news agency.
'I really, really think collaboration is such an amazing and important part of being an artist, because you just learn every time you collaborate with someone different.
'So I just did a duet with Sprints, because they covered Foundations, and that was really fun.'

Nash, 37, added: 'Kneecap would be amazing to collaborate with. My mum's from Dublin and I think that the way they use their political platform is really important.'
She continued: 'I don't think English people really understand their (Ireland's) history at all, they just don't know it.
'So I think there's an opportunity to educate people about England and Ireland's history, and sort of being half-English, half-Irish myself I have quite a good understanding of that, but I didn't learn it at school.

'There's so many amazing musicians to collaborate with. I love Amyl And The Sniffers.'

Before their performance on the West Holts Stage, several British politicians called for Kneecap to be removed from the line-up and UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said their performance would not be 'appropriate'.
During their set, member Naoise O Caireallain said: 'The Prime Minister of your country, not mine, said he didn't want us to play, so f*** Keir Starmer.'
In reference to his bandmate's upcoming court date the rapper, who performs under the name Moglai Bap, said they would 'start a riot outside the courts', before clarifying: 'No riots, just love and support, and support for Palestine.'
Bobby Vylan, of rap duo Bob Vylan, had earlier led crowds in chants of 'Free, free Palestine' and 'Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)'.

According to reports, Bobby Vylan is called Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, from Ipswich. Robinson-Foster is listed on Companies House as being the director of Ghost Theatre Records, which is operated by Bob Vylan.
Mr Starmer said the latter chant was 'appalling hate speech' and urged the BBC to explain how the scenes were broadcast.
Speaking on the politics of Glastonbury, Nash said: 'What's the history of Glastonbury? It's about anti-corporation, Greenpeace.
'It is ultimately a political festival, and people come here to find togetherness, community, a sense of hope and to watch people play amazing shows, and to have their lives changed, to be inspired.

'I think that we're seeing a lot of really scary things in the world right now, and people want to feel like they can see what they feel on stage being voiced, and I think that politicians need to get a grip.'
Asked about artists who say they do not want to be political, she said: 'Certain people, you can't escape the politics of existing in the world.
'If you are a woman and you're like, 'I'm not political', I'm like, 'You are, you are. Everything about your life is political, whether you want it to be or not'.
'I think if you're a very privileged, white, rich man, sure you don't want to be political, or you don't have to be.
'But also, do you even have to comment that you don't want to be? I'm not really sure it helps.
'I think just don't be, then, in a way, if you just want to be a pop band, just be a pop band.
'That's not how I was raised. So it's really difficult for me to understand somebody saying, 'I don't want to be political'.'
It came after The 1975 frontman Matty Healy said the band did not want their legacy to be 'one of politics' during their Friday night headline slot.
'I think we don't need more politics, we need more love and friendship,' he said.
Nash headlined Glastonbury's Left Field stage on Saturday evening and performed a secret set on the BBC Introducing stage on Sunday.
She has released several studio albums and is known for songs including Mouthwash and Foundations, the latter of which peaked at number two in the UK singles chart.

Committee asks BBC boss for view on ‘what went wrong' with Glastonbury coverage

A Government committee has written to BBC director-general Tim Davie asking him for a 'personal assessment of what went wrong' with the broadcaster's Glastonbury coverage. The BBC has faced strong criticism for continuing to livestream the performance of punk rap duo Bob Vylan, which is now the subject of a criminal police investigation, at the festival on iPlayer. They led chants of 'Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their set on the West Holts Stage on Saturday, with the broadcaster providing on-screen warnings about discriminatory language on its platform. It later apologised on Monday and said the chants held 'antisemitic sentiments' that were 'unacceptable'. Irish rap trio Kneecap, who are also facing an Avon and Somerset Police investigation, appeared on the same stage directly after Bob Vylan and led the Glastonbury audience in 'Free Palestine' chants. It has since been revealed that Tim Davie was at Glastonbury when the pro-Palestine chants were broadcast. In a letter sent to Mr Davie by the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Tuesday, chairwoman Dame Caroline Dinenage asked the BBC boss 12 questions after saying its coverage had caused 'widespread concern'. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy previously said that 'several' editorial failures 'becomes a problem of leadership' during a statement on the BBC's coverage to the Commons. Among the questions, Dame Caroline said: 'Before the festival started, did the BBC consider streaming all or part of its Glastonbury coverage with a short time delay, to allow room to respond to events if necessary?' The Conservative MP went on to ask how many BBC staff and contractors were working at Glastonbury or on its coverage, if staff with the authority to cut Bob Vylan's live stream were present during their performance and whether ending the live stream was discussed mid-performance. Dame Caroline then asked: 'At what level were the decisions made to not stream Kneecap live and to stream Bob Vylan live, but with a warning on screen?' The letter asked if the BBC had a contingency plan for the event and who was responsible for forming and actioning the plan, before asking if the broadcaster would review its Editorial Guidelines and guidance for live output 'to ensure they are fit for live streaming'. The Tory MP added: 'In summary, what is your personal assessment of what went wrong and what (are the) key lessons that the BBC will take away from the experience of live streaming Glastonbury 2025?' Dame Caroline said she hoped for Mr Davie's response to the questions within two weeks. Avon and Somerset Police said it had launched a probe into both the Bob Vylan and Kneecap performances after reviewing video footage and audio recordings, with a senior detective appointed to lead the investigation. A force spokesman said: 'This has been recorded as a public order incident at this time while our inquiries are at an early stage. 'The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes.' In response to criticism of their performance on Tuesday, Bob Vylan said in a statement posted on Instagram that they were being 'targeted for speaking up' and that 'a good many people would have you believe a punk band is the number one threat to world peace.' The statement said: 'We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people. 'We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine. A machine whose own soldiers were told to use 'unnecessary lethal force' against innocent civilians waiting for aid. 'A machine that has destroyed much of Gaza.'

Louise Brealey: ‘More Sherlock? I don't think Benedict Cumberbatch is averse'

I t is hard to think of a more dysfunctional television mother than Deb in Such Brave Girls, Kat Sadler's Bafta-winning sitcom, which returns this week for a second series. Sure, we can empathise with her plight as a single mother of two rather challenging daughters but if the character played by Louise Brealey were real, social services would probably have been called many years ago. The daughters in question are Josie, played by Sadler, and Billie, played by Sadler's real-life sister, Lizzie Davidson. Deb is flagrant in her favouritism towards Billie — whose loud-mouthed monomania clearly matches her own — and in series two actually kidnaps the clinically depressed older sister Josie as part of a weird plan to get her ghastly boyfriend to marry her and move her and her daughters into his big house.
