Stirling dad completes cross-country cycle ride for cancer charities
A Stirling dad who cycled more than 1,000 miles across the length of the UK for a special charity effort has said reaching the finish line was a 'life-changing' experience.
Ross Lang was part of a team of eight cyclists who have raised almost £50,000 for a pair of good causes after completing the 12-day trek from Land's End to John o'Groats.
They crossed the finish line last week, cheered on by family and friends - as well as the skirl of the pipes from the Wick RBLS Pipe Band.
After crossing the line, Ross admitted there were times where he wasn't sure about completing the gruelling pedal, but remembering the connection to the cause pushed him back into the saddle.
Ross said: 'It has been one of the best experiences of my life doing this ride.
'Cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats has always been an ambition, while raising so much money for Maggie's and Young Lives vs Cancer is just fantastic.
'It was tough going. Early on, I had a problem with my back, which I thought might stop me in my tracks, but the team's support and remembering why we were riding kept me going.'
Each rider had a deeply personal reason for taking on the challenge, having lost a wife, a parent or supported a loved one through cancer.
For Ross, 57, he was thinking about several people in his own life who have battled with cancer - including friends and partners - and in 2023, his stepfather passed away following a long battle with throat and lung cancer.
The Saltcoats-born dad was roared to the line by wife Jane and kids Ishbel and Dugald, as well as dog Jett.
Donations are still continuing to flood in above the £50,000 already raised - with the commitments set to be split equally between Maggie's, which offers practical and emotional support to people with cancer, and Young Lives vs Cancer which helps children and young people find strength as they fight the disease.
Ride Against Cancer organiser Jim Webster, co-founder of the architecture studio HAUS Collective, whose wife survived breast cancer, said: 'We took on this challenge to do something together that was positive after each of us had a loved one go through cancer and it's been both incredible and humbling.
'So many Scottish businesses stepped up to support us with logistics, supplies and donations and we've had an incredible team of helpers, including colleagues, friends and family.
'We know that cancer affects almost everyone at some point, but it really hit home during the ride as so many people stopped us after spotting our Ride Against Cancer jerseys to share their own stories.
'We're hugely grateful to everyone who's donated to help Maggie's and Young Lives vs Cancer be there for families when they need it most.'

Quarter of a million NHS Scotland patient falls in 5 years
Labour's call comes as there were at least 266,573 patient falls between 2019 and 2024, according to Freedom of Information data obtained by the party. When incidents in 2025 were included, this number rose to 282,385. With nine out of 14 health boards reporting an increase, the figures show that patients are becoming more likely to fall. Patient falls rose 75 per cent in NHS Orkney - from 114 incidents in 2019 to 200 in 2024 - and in hospitals overseen by NHS Dumfries they rose by a third. The highest amount of falls took place in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde with 71,870 incidents recorded between 2019 and 2025. The least amount of falls were recorded in NHS Shetland where 466 incidents took place over the same period of time. Standard hospital guidance recommends avoiding clutter, individual risk assessments and ensuring patients at risk of falling should have a clear route to a toilet. Just under a quarter of the [[NHS Scotland]] estate was built in the 1960s and 1970s and last year the SNP froze plans to build new hospitals, treatment centres and surgeries, citing budgetary pressures. It is estimated it would cost around £8.5bn to replace these buildings. The figures also come amidst a backdrop of long waits for care in Scotland as one in six Scots are currently on an NHS waiting list. "With long queues at A&E and out-of-date hospitals, hard-working NHS staff are already stretched to breaking point. "The SNP must act now to ensure that patients don't come to unnecessary harm because of the condition of the estate or overcrowding. "Our NHS needs a new direction — a Scottish Labour government will modernise our hospitals and ensure they are fit for the future." Scottish Ministers expect NHS Boards to be open with patients about what happened and to learn lessons to prevent it happening again when incidents like falls occur. The Scottish Government has said they are committed to patient safety. A spokesperson said: 'Patient safety is paramount and Scottish Ministers are committed to ensuring all health and care is safe, effective and patient-centred. 'In 2025-26, NHS Boards received increased investment in their baseline funding, bringing total investment to over £16.2 billion. 'And the Scottish Government's Budget is providing more than £1 billion in capital investment, with £140 million additional funding targeted at high risk areas of maintenance and repair of the existing estate, equipment and digital replacement."

In NHS Borders, the number of recorded falls jumped by 29% and by 75% in Orkney. Other boards witnessing a rise over a five year period were Dumfries and Galloway, Fife, Forth Valley and Highland. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde recorded a 7% increase while the figure in Lanarkshire was 6%. Labour say an NHS staffing crisis and hospital over-crowding have made facilities more unsafe. The SNP Government has also frozen plans to build new hospitals due to funding pressures. SNP Ministers must be held to account for the state of the NHS as thousands suffer

Health service staff are there for us from the cradle to the grave. But the NHS is in a bad way and SNP Ministers need to be held to account. GP services are at breaking point and accident and emergency services are also in crisis. The hundreds of thousands of people who are waiting for treatment are also suffering. Some facilities, such as the Monklands hospital, urgently need to be replaced. So it was worrying when Health Secretary Neil Gray last year put new NHS building projects on hold. We do not under-estimate the funding challenges governments across the UK are experiencing. But almost every part of the NHS is struggling and the buck stops with the Scottish Government. Senior SNP figures, including the First Minister, have made speeches extolling the virtues of the health service. They have also made promises that the service will improve. But the reality is different for patients who are waiting for an operation, or who may be getting treated in an unsafe hospital. Tangible improvement is long overdue and patient safety must be a priority for Neil Gray. Gaza death toll UN charity Unicef estimates that more than 50,000 children have been killed or injured since the war in Gaza began in October 2023. The scenes of horror that we see on our screens every night are almost unimaginable. Children in Gaza are also starving as the war between Israel and Hamas shows no sign of abating. The news that seriously ill or injured children from Gaza will be brought to the UK for medical treatment is to be welcomed. It is understood the UK Government will allow up to 300 young people to enter the UK to receive free medical care. This is a compassionate move, but it must also be followed by an immediate ceasefire by Israel. The loss of life in this horrible conflict has been heartbreaking and an internationally-brokered peace deal must be the goal.
