North Carolina mountain paradise becomes surprising boomtown
Boone offers 70 to 80 degree summer days and a lifestyle for everyone from antique lovers to outdoor enthusiasts. The town, considered a hidden gem, is repeatedly listed as one of the best summer getaways in the South. 'In general, we're having a warm week this week and we're only touching low to mid-80s,' local realtor Brandon Freyer told the Daily Mail.
'When it's 90 down [in Charlotte] and it's 77 up here, it's enough for people to say, 'I'll head up for the weekend,' Freyer explained. The mountaintop haven is a vibrant college town home to Appalachian State University, where over 20,000 undergraduates bring young energy and diversity to the region.
'We got a variety of different folk,' Freyer said. 'We have a bunch of locals that live here. We get a lot of people who have gone to school at App and now they're settled maybe somewhere else in the Carolina region. 'They still have fond memories of the place and dream of having a second home.'
Many people have enjoyed Boone so much that they have purchased a second home either as a weekend retreat or an investment property to rent out. 'It's probably... maybe two-thirds to 75 percent of our homes are second homes up here,' Freyer said.
He added that Boone's population surges in the summer as out-of-staters – particularly from South Florida and other sweltering regions – seek out the area's milder climate and high-altitude adventures. 'We have a bunch of locals that live here. We get a lot of people who have gone to school at App and now they're settled maybe somewhere else in the Carolina region.
'They still have fond memories of the place and dream of having a second home.' There's plenty of hiking, fly fishing, golf, or ziplining in Boone and its neighboring towns like Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, and West Jefferson. Boone is also the main hub for nearby towns.
'We've got a bunch of small mountain towns... Boone's kind of the main hub,' Freyer said. 'You get a lot of folks that come up here to play tennis, play pickleball, golf, lots of great hiking, water sports as well.' For those in the know, Boone also remains a four-season destination.
'We're also kind of as far south as you can ski more or less,' he added. 'So we do get a lot of folks again from the Carolina region that'll come to ski in the winter time.' Food, festivals, and lawn chair concerts also add to Boone's appeal.
From summer concert series at the base of Beech Mountain's ski slopes to Friday night food truck rallies in Valle Crucis, Boone has no shortage of entertainment. 'There's a whole lot of great dining in the area,' Freyer said. 'The town has something going on pretty much every weekend.
'People are sitting out in their lawn chairs along the slopes for the concerts, it's very family friendly. People bring their kid and hang out.' Art shows, farmer's markets, and community events make it easy to see why so many visitors flock there for summer. Boone's popularity has raised the median home price slightly.
'As far as single-family [homes] go, you're definitely getting over $500,000,' Freyer said. 'We're pushing kind of into that $600,000 range now.' Still, for many, it's worth the break from scorching summer heat.
There is such an influx of visitors that Boone was awarded an $850,000 grant to revitalize Howard Street, the 'largest downtown Boone street revitalization effort in modern history,' according to the Town of Boone. The grant will support several Howard Street updates: relocating electrical utilities underground, improving water, sewer, and stormwater systems and converting part of Howard Street into pedestrian and bicycle only.

Southern town sheds 'dirty' image to become fastest-growing hotspot for retirees
The South Carolina town once known as 'Dirty Myrtle' after its infamous strip clubs and boozy bars has transformed into a retirement haven. Myrtle Beach, situated along a 60-mile string of beaches, is home to the fastest growing population of retirees in the US. The number of over 65s living in the seaside town rose 6.3 percent last year alone, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. The senior population has grown by more than 22 percent since 2020, the fastest rate for a US town this decade. While the vacation hotspot is still visited by more than 18 million tourists every year the senior population now makes up more than a quarter of the roughly 413,000 year-round residents. The beachfront town is known for its mile-long boardwalk and iconic 200-foot Ferris wheel. The town used to bring in biker rallies, but the noise, traffic and ensuing rowdiness led the city to take measures to end the events in the late 2000s. Now the streets are more likely to be lined with seniors playing pickleball and quiet outdoor diners. The pandemic accelerated the town's senior boom, as many longtime visitors from Ohio and New York decided to take the opportunity to relocate. Many chose to retire early, while others freed by homeworking decided to relocate their families. 'Many people converted that thought into action,' longtime resident Mark Kruea told the Associated Press. 'The climate's great, taxes are low, there's a wealth of opportunities for recreation, dining and shopping,' Kruea, who is running to be mayor, explained. Myrtle Beach is roughly half-way between New York City and Miami, which appeals to seniors who want to retire at the beach but do not want to go all the way down to Florida or other Southern states. The small Myrtle Beach International Airport also has direct flights to many locations across the US. The weather in Myrtle Beach is also ideal for retirees as there are seasons, but they are not extreme. July tends to be the hottest month, with an average temperature of 87.6 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest month, meanwhile, is January, when temperatures drop down to around 55.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Myrtle Beach also has all the attractions and amenities of vacation destination, which means there is plenty for retirees to do. There is the 60-mile stretch of beaches, known as the Grand Strand, as well as world-class golf courses, restaurants and shops. While Myrtle Beach has become a retirement boomtown, an aging population has meant the entire over 65 population in the US shot up by 3.1 percent last year. In the past two decades, seniors have increased from 12.4 percent to 18 percent of the US population. The share of children, meanwhile, has dropped from 25 percent to 21.5 percent, according to population estimates reported by AP. Maine, Vermont, and Florida were the only three states where older adults outnumbered children as recently as 2020. But four years later, those states were joined by Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

I live on a cruise ship, rent and food are free even though I'm not crew – but there are 3 things I cannot do
IMAGINE if you could travel the world without having to worry about finding and covering accommodation and food. This is exactly what one woman, only known as the American Girl on TikTok, gets to experience thanks to her hubby who's a crew member. 2 2 As her husband works on the epic cruise ship as a ''staff chief engineer'', the woman gets to sail for free ''as wife on board''. This, she recently listed, comes with a number of perks, such as free accommodation, food and drinks. However, whilst she lives there both as ''crew'' and a ''guest'' at the same time, there are a few things that are off-limit for the TikToker. One of these, she said in the video, is gambling. ''I am not allowed to sit by a slot machine and play my heart out until I win. ''Because it would look a little weird if I as a wife of the staff chief engineer won a big jackpot.'' While she is allowed to enter the crew and the guest areas, the lucky woman is forced to wear a name badge in staff areas. ''So that they know that I am one of them and I am allowed down there because we don't want any guests down in the crew area.'' There are also a couple of other things she needs to abide by, such as leaving the ship after the guests have disembarked - this is usually an hour afterwards. As a guest, the TikToker - who posts under the username @ dutchworld_americangirl - also gets access to the pool, the lavish spa area and gym. I 'live' on a cruise ship with my son & fiancé - the food's amazing, there's childcare & our laundry's done for free too ''I can use all those guest amenities. But I always play it with the rule of thumb. ''If the pool is packed then I make sure to get up and give the guests the seat - it's just the right thing to do. ''I used to be a cruise director, so I totally understand how to give the guests the best time they possibly can - and I don't think a crew member taking up their seat is the right thing to do.'' When travelling on the cruise with her partner, the woman also needs to have her international travel insurance ''at all times'' in case something was to happen. Pros and cons of going on a cruise ship Whether you're considering a long holiday, working remotely or even living on board a cruise ship for a few months or years, here are the pros and cons from a former cruise shipper. Pros Travel the world, learn and experience new cultures Meet new people Don't have to think or worry about room cleaning, or food Cons Internet connection can be painfully slow and expensive Limited luggage allowance so have to wear the same clothes on rotation Having no control of where the ship would go next and the possibility of visiting the same ports Having the same onboard entertainment, on-demand movies, and little choice of TV channels No fresh newspapers or new books unless someone adds them to the library Relatively the same food week after week unless major menu changes occur seasonally. Occasional rough seas, bad weather and viral outbreaks while inboard. 'Soooo....I'm not seeing any negatives' The informative clip, which has racked up more than 5million views, has clearly sparked interest in this lifestyle for many. One singleton chuckled: ''Note to self: marry someone who works on a cruise ship.'' Another begged: ''please refer me to a man on board.'' Someone else chimed in: ''I see no negatives here! ''Soooo....I'm not seeing any negatives,'' a fourth agreed.
