Rishabh Pant ‘pissed me off a bit': What Jofra Archer told India wicketkeeper in aggressive send off - ‘I just said…'

Jofra Archer made a memorable return to Test cricket after a lengthy period of absence due to injury. Archer made his comeback in the third Test between India and England, at Lord's, where the hosts won by 22 runs in a nail-biting thriller. Archer had an instant impact, as he removed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal early in both innings. He also got Washington Sundar in the first innings. In the second, Archer also got the crucial wicket of Rishabh Pant, and also of Sundar once again. England's Jofra Archer celebrates the wicket of India's Rishabh Pant.(PTI) Archer's dismissal of Pant was a turning point on Day 5, as India looked for a rescue act from Pant, who just joined KL Rahul as the new batter after India lost four wickets on Day 4. India finished Day 4 at 58/4 with Rahul still unbeaten. Pant joined Rahul as the new batter in the first session on Day 5, but ended up facing only 12 balls and managed nine runs. Receiving a length delivery from Archer, the ball went past Pant's outside edge and smashed the top of off stump. It was England's opening breakthrough on Day 5 and it came early, and they didn't look back. Jofra Archer on that Rishabh Pant send-off As he removed Pant, Archer had a special send-off for the wicketkeeper-batter and also said some words. Opening up on his send-off to Pant, Archer said on Sky Sports Cricket, 'It wasn't a proud moment. I just told him to 'charge that'. Honestly, this morning, I was struggling a little bit, the ball just kept coming out full. One of the full ones, he just charged, and it pissed me off a bit. When the [wicket] ball nipped down the slope, honestly I was so grateful for that.' On his return, he said, 'Hectic one for first back. Bowled a few more overs than I thought I would. Only played one Test at Lord's and the last one was just as special as this one. It's been a long time coming, but moments like this make it worth it. You never know if you're ready until you're ready.' The fourth Test is scheduled to begin on July 23 and will take place in Manchester. Trailing 1-2, India will look to level the series and set up a thrilling finale.

‘He pissed me off a bit… I just told him to charge that': Jofra Archer on his send-off to Rishabh Pant during Lord's Test

A charged-up Jofra Archer bowled in full rhythm in his comeback Test, helping England beat India by 22 runs for a famous win at Lord's on Monday. The English pacer was quick in the air, and his terrifying deliveries troubled and dismissed three Indian batters — opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar. Archer started Day 5 high on confidence and cleaned up India's biggest hope in the 193-run chase, Pant, after he played only 12 deliveries. From a delivery that moved ever so slightly, beating Pant's outside edge, Archer disturbed the woodwork. An overly aggressive Archer didn't hold back his emotions and charged up on Pant, giving a send-off and exchanging a few words. Just before his dismissal, Pant charged down the ground, hitting a full ball from Archer at long-off, which ignited Archer. 'I just told him to charge that!,' said Archer to Sky Sports. 'I was struggling a little bit and one of the full balls he charged pissed me off a little bit, so when the ball nipped down the slope I was so grateful. I think that gave everyone the energy to push for this win,' he said. After staging a monumental comeback led by Ravindra Jadeja's hard-fought fifty, India eventually lost the Test by 22 runs after getting all out for 170. With this win, England went up 2-1 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Test series with two Tests remaining. Archer then showed his athleticism and dived right on his follow-through to take a sharp one-handed catch, removing Washington Sundar for a duck. Archer, who bowled the fastest spell of his Test career, said he was a bit 'emotional' but the Lord's crowd gave him 'huge lift'. 'It was a long time coming, a lot of rehab, a lot of training but it's moments like this that makes it all worth it. It was a long journey and I was a bit emotional. I tried my best not to be but when I got the first wicket I think that all went out of the window. All the joy. The whole crowd gave me a huge lift,' said Archer. 'The hardest part has been playing cricket for the last year and a half and still having the training wheels on talking about workloads – bowl today, don't bowl tomorrow. Sometimes you think you are ready but you never know until you do it. The safer way is the best way so I am not too fussed and this is surely worth the wait,' he added.

Siraj's Bizarre Lord's Dismissal A Painful Reminder Of Srinath's 1999 Chennai Heartbreak Vs Pakistan

Mohammed Siraj's dismissal at Lord's has triggered the memories of another wicket that broke Indian hearts all the way back in 1999. It wasn't meant to be. How else do you explain Mohammed Siraj getting bowled despite middling the ball delivered by Shoaib Bashir – bowling with a broken finger? Of course, batting isn't Siraj's strongest suit but the manner in which he had survived the charging English bowlers on a fifth day pitch while giving company to Ravindra Jadeja, the attempt did reignite diminishing Indian hopes of an unlikely win in the third Test. Siraj offered a dead bat, the ball crashed against the blade but thanks to the bowler imparting overspin, it spun back and rolled to collide with the stumps with the impact strong enough to dislodge the bail. It was the wicket England needed to seal a thrilling 22-run win and the dismissal sparked wild celebrations. Siraj, as expected, was crestfallen. It was an agonising end to the contest for the Indian fans who may have lost their hopes early in the day's play when Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer combined to trigger a collapse from where it appeared there's no turning back. Jadeja kept the flag aloft and found some support from no. 10 Jasprit Bumrah and then Siraj to keep the scoreboard ticking and hopes alive. It ended in a heartbreak for the tourists. Shoaib Bashir bowling out Siraj today to seal the win felt eerily like Saqlain Mushtaq dismissing Srinath in that epic 1999 Chennai Test. History has a strange way of echoing. Who says Test cricket isn't thrilling? #ENGvIND #PAKvIND #TestCricket #Nostalgia — Maham Fazal (@MahamFazal_) July 14, 2025 The scenes were eerily similar to another Test match that India lost way back in 1999 to Pakistan in Chennai. Back then, chasing a target of 271, a Sachin Tendulkar century and Nayan Mongia's patient fifty kept India in the contest despite a batting collapse. While at Lord's, India had a quality batter in Jadeja to keep the ship from sinking, in Chennai, the task was left to two tailenders in Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad. The contest ended with an Indian defeat, by 12 runs with Srinath being the last man to fall. He, too, like Siraj, fell to an offspinner in Saqlain Mushtaq. Again, like Siraj, Srinath too offered a solid defensive shot, but the ball spun after landing on the pitch and skip through his gates to crash onto the stumps, breaking a million Indian hearts. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
