Biden's disastrous debate due to sleeping pills: son

Perth Nowa day ago
Former US president Joe Biden's son Hunter says his father's disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump was the result of him taking the sedative Ambien due to his travel.
"And I'll tell you what, I know exactly what happened in that debate. He (Joe Biden) flew around the world, basically the mileage he could have flown around the world three times," Hunter Biden said in an interview with YouTube creator Andrew Callaghan.
"He's 81 years old. He's tired as shit.
"They give him Ambien to be able to sleep. He gets up on the stage and he looks like he's a deer in the headlights," Hunter Biden added.
Ambien, also sold under the brand Stilnox, is a medication used for short-term treatment of sleeping problems. Joe Biden's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The former president prepared at Camp David with his aides for several days for the catastrophic June 24 debate.
Prior to being at Camp David, the Democrat took two European trips and was on the US west coast for a fundraiser.
Biden's debate performance against then-Republican presidential candidate Trump, in which the Democrat regularly struggled to finish his thoughts, triggered a backlash against his candidacy for the 2024 elections.
Less than a month later, Biden stepped aside as presidential candidate after having trailed Trump in the polls.
Former vice president Kamala Harris then became the candidate for the Democrats and went on to lose to Trump in the November elections.
In the days after the debate, the former president blamed his performance on jet lag after two overseas trips earlier that month.
In the interview released on Monday, Hunter Biden also expressed frustration with Democratic voices, strategists and lawmakers who abandoned his father's candidacy following the debate.

Trump rehashes years-old grievances about Obama

US President Donald Trump has rehashed longstanding grievances over the Russia investigation that shadowed much of his first term, lashing out following a new report from his intelligence director aimed at casting doubt on long-established findings about Moscow's interference in the 2016 election. "It's time to go after people," Trump said from the Oval Office on Tuesday as he repeated a baseless claim that former President Barack Obama and other officials had engaged in treason. Trump was not making his claims for the first time, but he delivered them when administration officials are harnessing the machinery of the federal government to investigate the targets of Trump's derision, including key officials responsible for scrutinising Russia's attempts to intervene on Trump's behalf in 2016. The backward-looking inquiries are taking place even as the Republican administration's national security agencies are confronting global threats. But they have served as a rallying cry for Trump, who is trying to unify a political base at odds over the Jeffrey Epstein case, with some allies pressing to disclose more information despite the president's push to turn the page. Trump's attack prompted a rare response from Obama's post-presidential office. "Our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response," said Patrick Rodenbush, an Obama spokesman. "But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction." Trump's tirade unfolded against the backdrop of a new report from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard that represented his administration's latest attempt to rewrite the history of the Russia investigation, which has infuriated him for years. The report, released on Friday, downplayed the extent of Russian interference in the 2016 election by highlighting Obama administration emails showing officials had concluded before and after the presidential race that Moscow had not hacked state election systems to manipulate votes in Trump's favour. But Obama's Democratic administration never suggested otherwise, even as it exposed other means by which Russia interfered in the election, including through a massive hack-and-leak operation of Democratic emails by intelligence operatives working with WikiLeaks, as well as a covert influence campaign aimed at swaying public opinion and sowing discord through fake social media posts. Trump accused Obama, without evidence, of being the "ringleader" of a conspiracy to get him.

Under the gun over Epstein, Trump tries to finger Obama for ‘treason'

Washington: There's something about the presence of a foreign leader in the Oval Office that spurs Donald Trump into territory that is, even for him, extreme. On Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), it was the Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos Jr who bore witness to a stunning display of temerity as the US president accused one of his predecessors, Barack Obama, of trying to engineer a coup and committing 'treason'. The allegation, spurious as it is, arises from a document compiled by Trump's director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, alleging a 'treasonous conspiracy' by senior Obama administration officials in 2016 to wrongly assert that Russia interfered in the presidential election of that year, which Trump won. In short, the dossier suggests intelligence officials changed their findings under political pressure from Obama and others, and embraced the narrative that Vladimir Putin's regime tried to swing the vote for Trump. The 11-page memo disingenuously conflates different findings. Officials never alleged a Russian operation to hack voting systems; they did, however, come to the view that Russia backed Trump over Democrat rival Hillary Clinton and attempted to influence the election outcome in surreptitious ways. That was also the conclusion of multiple investigations, including a lengthy Senate Intelligence Committee report signed in 2020 by Republicans, including now Secretary of State Marco Rubio. But Trump is now propagating the idea it was all invented at a December 2016 White House meeting, based on an email tasking intelligence chiefs to prepare an assessment 'per the President's request', referring to Obama. 'Obama's been caught directly. His orders are on the paper. The papers are signed,' Trump raged in the Oval Office. 'They have them stone-cold and it was President Obama. The leader of the gang was President Obama. Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him?'
