The CMO said that platelet deficiency is not the cause of death in dengue patients. According to international standards, a patient does not require a platelet transfusion unless their platelet count is below 10,000 and there is active bleeding. Platelet transfusion is not the primary treatment for dengue. He explained that dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by one of four types of dengue viruses, spread by the bite of an infected female Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito.
Common symptoms of dengue include high fever, runny nose, mild red rashes on the skin, cough, and pain behind the eyes and in the joints. Some individuals may develop red and white spotted rashes, followed by loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, etc. Patients with dengue should seek medical advice, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Paracetamol can be taken to reduce fever and joint pain, but aspirin or ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Prof Gopal Nath explained that only certain species of Anopheles mosquitoes spread malaria. When a female Anopheles mosquito feeds on the blood of a malaria patient, the malaria parasite enters its stomach. This mosquito then infects a person with malaria. Fever occurs within 14 to 21 days of the malaria parasite entering the human body. Information was provided on the symptoms, identification, and treatment of malaria patients.
State-level PATH-CHRI senior technical officer for Malaria, Dr Amrit Shukla, emphasised the need for immediate malaria testing of fever patients and prompt comprehensive treatment if found positive.

Mumbai: KEM Hospital has started its largest and most expensive BMC-funded trials with 7,000 women aimed as participants, which will potentially change how breast cancer is diagnosed at the hospital. The trial, which will last for 12 to 28 months, involves a small, portable device with a high-resolution thermal sensor powered by artificial intelligence. The hospital has also started a dedicated 15-bed ward for all breast-related ailments, 14 years after starting the city's first breast clinic at a civic hospital. Unlike traditional mammography, the machine in trial involves no physical contact or breast compression, eliminating the discomfort associated with X-ray-based screening. During the procedure, the patient is alone in a private room, seated at a fixed distance from the thermal imaging device with curtains for privacy. The exact costs were unavailable until press time, but hospital officials said this is the largest BMC-funded trial. Bhubaneswar: With over 190 active diarrhoea cases under treatment and strict vigilance on the rising dengue and malaria situation, the state govt on Thursday announced a special disinfection drive to curb the spread of water-borne and vector-borne diseases. The drive, a joint effort of the health and family welfare department and the panchayati raj and drinking water department, will be carried out in two phases on July 4 and July 11. A detailed action plan was finalised at a high-level meeting chaired by Health Secretary Aswathy S. "During the campaign, super chlorination of drinking water sources, and proper cleaning and disinfection of health facilities, educational institutions, marketplaces, and other public places will be undertaken," said the health and family welfare department in an official statement. Village and household-level awareness campaigns will be conducted through ASHA and ANM workers. They will demonstrate the use of halazone tablets, long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), handwashing, and other hygienic practices.
