Should you trust chatbots with health advice? Google study raises concerns
The study, titled What's Up, Doc? Analysing How Users Seek Health Information in Large-Scale Conversational AI Datasets, published on arXiv, raises important concerns about the reliability and safety of using chatbots for health guidance.
Conducted by researchers from Google, along with UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University, and the University of Washington, the study analysed over 11,000 real-world health conversations with chatbots to understand what people are really asking, and how those questions may sometimes lead them astray.
According to the study, most people ask about treatments rather than symptoms or general information. The research also found that users often pose incomplete or leading questions, which result in inaccurate or biased chatbot responses.
Why are people turning to AI chatbots for health advice?
The study found that rising healthcare costs and limited access to doctors are pushing more people to seek quick, easy health answers from AI chatbots. It highlighted that around 31 per cent of US adults in 2024 had used generative AI for health-related questions.
What kind of questions? Mostly about treatments, symptoms, lifestyle changes, and diagnostic tests. Chatbots are becoming the go-to digital 'doctor's assistant' for many.
It is about how we ask health questions
The researchers built a special dataset called HealthChat-11K with 25,000 user messages across 21 health specialities.
They found that:
Most conversations are short and focused on quick information
Many users provide incomplete context, often leaving out critical details
Around 23 per cent of treatment-related queries included leading phrases such as 'Is this the best drug for me?' or 'This should work, right?'
These kinds of questions can trigger what researchers call the chatbot's 'sycophancy bias,' meaning the AI might simply agree with the user to sound helpful—even if the advice is incorrect.
In some cases, users asked about unsafe or inappropriate treatments, which the chatbot still partially validated.
Can chatbots handle complex health questions?
The study found that AI chatbots may struggle with vague or partial information. They often assume users know how to describe their conditions properly, which is not always the case. For instance, a person might ask about a medicine without mentioning key medical history, leading to potentially incorrect chatbot responses.
Can AI handle emotional conversations?
The study also found that people sometimes express frustration, confusion, or gratitude during health-related chats. While emotional exchanges were less common, they often marked key turning points—either ending the conversation or spiralling into repetitive loops where the user kept challenging the chatbot.
This highlights a need for AI models to better interpret emotional cues, not just facts.
What can improve health chats with AI?
The researchers suggested the following improvements:
Train chatbots to ask clarifying follow-up questions when context is missing
Design systems that recognise and handle leading or biased user questions
Build models that respond to emotional cues more sensitively
The study reinforces that in health chats with AI, how you ask matters just as much as what you ask. The way a question is framed can significantly influence the quality of the response. So next time you turn to AI for health advice, choose your words carefully—it could make all the difference. For more health updates, follow #HealthWithBS

Astronomers Discover "Water-Rich Super-Earth" Twice As Big As Our Planet
Scientists have discovered a new "super-Earth" that is located about 154 light-years away and is nearly twice as big and four times as massive as our planet. According to a paper published on the arXiv preprint server, the team of astronomers, led by Abderahmane Soubkiou of the Oukaimeden Observatory in Morocco, discovered the exoplanet using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). They stated the newly discovered alien world, designated TOI-1846 b, is likely a water-rich super-Earth and is estimated to be 7.2 billion years old. "We have validated TOI-1846 b using TESS and multicolour ground-based photometric data, high-resolution imaging, and spectroscopic observations," the researchers wrote in the paper, as per According to the study, the exoplanet has a radius of about 1.792 Earth radii and is about 4.4 times more massive than our planet. It orbits its host every 3.93 days, and the equilibrium temperature of the planet is estimated to be 568.1 K. Based on their research, scientists concluded that the new "super-Earth" is likely water-rich. But they noted that radial velocity (RV) observations of TOI-1846 b should be conducted in order to unveil its composition. "These findings make TOI-1846 b well-suited for mass determination via RV observations. This could be possible with the MAROON-X instrument. (...) We find a TSM [transmission spectroscopy metric] of 47 for TOI-1846 b, which is below the 90 benchmark for small sub-Neptunes," the authors of the paper wrote, according to the outlet. When it comes to the parent star TOI-1846, the researchers said that the exoplanet is about 0.4 times the size of the Sun, and its mass is approximately 0.42 solar masses. The star has an effective temperature of 3,568 K and is estimated to be 7.2 billion years old, study authors said. Meanwhile, earlier this year, researchers discovered another "super-Earth" located outside our solar system. The exoplanet, designated HD 20794 d, is six times the mass of Earth and could harbour liquid water on its surface. Located 20 light-years away, it orbits within the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun, according to findings from the University of Oxford. However, unlike Earth's circular orbit, HD 20794 d follows an elliptical path, making it uncertain whether the planet could support life, researchers said.

WHO says Gaza's Nasser hospital 'one massive trauma ward'
Geneva: Nasser hospital in Gaza is operating as "one massive trauma ward" due to an influx of patients wounded at non-United Nations food distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation , the World Health Organization said on Friday. The U.S.- and Israeli-backed GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of deliveries that the United Nations says is neither impartial nor neutral. It has repeatedly denied that incidents involving people killed or wounded at its sites have occurred. The GHF told Reuters on Friday that "the most deadly attacks on aid sites have been linked to U.N. convoys," and said the U.N. and humanitarian groups should work "collaboratively" with the GHF to "maximise the amount of aid being securely delivered into Gaza". The U.N. in Geneva was immediately available for comment. Referring to medical staff at the Nasser hospital, Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the West Bank and Gaza, told reporters in Geneva: "They've seen already for weeks, daily injuries ... (the) majority coming from the so-called safe non-UN food distribution sites. The hospital is now operating as one massive trauma ward." Israel lifted an 11-week aid blockade on Gaza on May 19. The United Nations human rights office said on Friday that it had recorded at least 613 killings both at aid points run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and near humanitarian convoys. "We have recorded 613 killings, both at GHF points and near humanitarian convoys - this is a figure as of June 27. Since then ... there have been further incidents," Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson for the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva. The OHCHR said 509 of the 613 were killed near GHF distribution points. The GHF dismissed these numbers as coming "directly from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry" and were being used to "falsely smear" its effort. The GHF has previously said it has delivered more than 60 million meals to hungry Palestinians in five weeks "safely and without interference", while other humanitarian groups had "nearly all of their aid looted." The U.N. office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that there have been some instances of violent looting and attacks on aid truck drivers, which it described as unacceptable. BULLET WOUNDS Hundreds of patients, mainly young boys, were being treated for traumatic injuries, including bullet wounds to the head, chest and knees, according to the WHO. Peeperkorn said health workers at Nasser hospital and testimonies from family members and friends of those wounded confirmed that the victims had been trying to access aid at sites run by the GHF. Peeperkorn recounted the cases of a 13-year-old boy shot in the head, as well as a 21-year-old with a bullet lodged in his neck which rendered him paraplegic. "There is no chance for any reversal or any proper treatment. Young lives are being destroyed forever," Peeperkorn said, urging for the fighting to stop and for more food aid to be allowed into Gaza. The war began when Hamas fighters stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent military assault has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry, while displacing most of the population of more than 2 million, triggering widespread hunger and leaving much of the territory in ruins.
