Major boost for Broncos and Queensland after big development around veteran playmaker
reports that Hunt will undergo a series of fitness tests on his troublesome hamstring and looks set to be named in coach Michael Maguire's 22-man squad on Tuesday if he comes through them unscathed. The Broncos coach confirmed to the publication that the veteran playmaker is progressing well, but insisted they would not take any risks with the 35-year-old if he is not right.
''Hunty' is doing well,' Maguire told The Courier Mail. 'We have just got to make sure the old boy is 100 per cent ready to go." The Broncos jumped to fifth on the ladder after their impressive come-from-behind win against Cronulla in round 16, and will come up against a fourth-placed Warriors side desperate to atone for their shock loss to a depleted Penrith.
If Hunt does prove his fitness, it could give Maguire his first look at what most believe to be Brisbane's first-choice spine. Fullback Reece Walsh is starting to hit form after returning from injury, while Ezra Mam has slotted back into the halves alongside Adam Reynolds after serving his nine-game ban. Hunt would be expected to complete the star-studded quartet by shifting to hooker.
It's a role the veteran has performed well at rep level for the Maroons and Kangaroos, and would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience. Billy Walters and Cory Paix have battled for the No.9 jersey at Brisbane this season but one of them will almost certainly drop out when Hunt returns.

Maguire is optimistic that Hunt will be fit enough to face the Warriors on Saturday, but could hold off on his return until the following Friday when they play the ladder-leading Bulldogs. But with Slater set to name his Maroons squad for the Origin decider after this weekend's games, Hunt will be desperate to feature against the Warriors and press his claims for a Queensland recall.
Hunt has been Slater's preferred No.9 in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 victory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker.
Grant was immense for the Maroons in Game 2 with a whopping 55 tackles and a try assist in Perth, where he showed that Slater might not need another hooker after playing the full 80 minutes. Kurt Mann also impressed in his 36-minute stint that included a try assist, 19 tackles and three tackle breaks from his 35 running metres.
Mann injected plenty of energy off the bench for Queensland but would seem the man most likely to make way if Hunt were to earn an Origin recall. And with the series on the line in enemy territory, Hunt's experience on the big stage could give Slater a major decision to make, if he makes a successful return for Brisbane this weekend.

Report: Warriors Could Look to Sign Sleeper Free Agent Guard
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. So far during the NBA offseason, the Golden State Warriors have been very quiet. For a team that clearly needed more help following their playoff series loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves after Stephen Curry's injury, the silence has grown deafening. Fans want to see the Warriors make some moves. Before a lot of the outside movement can be made, the team will need to figure out Jonathan Kuminga's future. Two names Golden State has been heavily connected to are Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton. Both players are viewed as likely to sign with the Warriors, but that isn't a done deal at this point in time. Read more: Report: Warriors Receive Major Al Horford Free Agency Update According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Warriors could be a potential suitor for veteran free agent guard Malcolm Brogdon. He hasn't been talked about a lot in free agency, but he's a quality player who would help Golden State's bench. "Another name worth mentioning that was connected to the Warriors in Las Vegas is Malcolm Brogdon," Siegel wrote on X. "The former Sixth Man of the Year has held out in free agency to this point despite multiple suitors contacting him in recent weeks." Brogdon played the 2024-25 season with the Washington Wizards. He missed most of the year and dealt with some injuries, but he would be well worth taking a flier on for a team like the Warriors to bring in depth behind Curry. During the 24 games and 13 starts Brogdon played in last year, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game. Back in the 2023-24 campaign with the Portland Trail Blazers, Brogdon played in 39 games and made 25 starts. He averaged 15.7 points per game to go along with 5.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds, while shooting 44 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from three-point range. One a one-year contract, Brogdon would be a valuable pickup for Golden State. He could be a scoring presence off of the bench and is a stable point guard for running an offense as well. Depending on the price he's looking to get, the Warriors should strongly consider signing him. For more on the Golden State Warriors and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Bulgarian nets brace in Wanderers win
Bulgarian international Bozhidar Kraev scored twice as Western Sydney Wanderers cruised into the Australia Cup round of 16 with a 3-0 win over NPL Queensland club Peninsula Power on Tuesday night. New Wanderers signing, veteran New Zealand international attacker Kosta Barbarouses, also found the back of the net at AJ Kelly Park as Peninsula's attempt to disrupt the visitors by narrowing the pitch proved to be fruitless. Kraev scored twice in the opening 23 minutes, with Barbarouses' goal nine minutes later putting the game to bed. It could have been worse for the Power, but goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell saved a 59th-minute penalty to deny Kraev a hat-trick. 'It was how we planned it, how we expected it and how we wished things to go,' Kraev told Paramount Plus in reflecting on his side's overall performance. The Wanderers starting side also included another of the club's off-season acquisitions in former Central Coast Mariners striker Alou Kuol, while ex-Melbourne City midfielder Steven Ugarkovic, who also recently signed with Western Sydney, was a second-half substitute. Joining the Wanderers in the round of 16 with wins on Tuesday night were Victorian clubs Avondale and Nunawading City. Avondale thrashed West Australian outfit Stirling Macedonia 5-1, while fourth-tier club Nunawading set a record Australia Cup scoreline with a 9-0 thumping of Darwin Olympic.

Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 19 - Jim Nolan (1949-50)
The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history. Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the second of 13 players who wore the No. 19 jersey for the Warriors. That player would be Golden State big man alum Jim Nolan. After ending his college career at Georgia Tech, Nolan was picked up with the 18th overall selection of the 1949 BAA Draft by the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors. The Macon, Georgia native would play the sole season of his BAA career with the Dubs, leaving the league as a player afterward. During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Nolan wore only jersey No. 19 and put up 1.6 points per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.
