Two men charged with historic sex offences at Welsh children's centre
Gwent Police said the two men have been charged with 45 alleged offences between them, relating to 16 victims.
The alleged sexual and physical offences took place predominantly at the Coed Glas Assessment Centre in Abergavenny, between the 1970s and 1990s.
Angus Riddell, 69, of Cwmbach, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has been charged with 38 offences, including three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 and one count of attempted indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16.
He is also charged with 14 counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 14 and 20 counts of assault, ill-treatment, neglect, abandoning a child, or causing a young person unnecessary suffering or injury.
Robin Griffiths, 65, from Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent, has been charged with seven counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 14.
Both men were arrested on Friday June 20 and have been now been bailed to appear before Newport Magistrates' Court on July 3.
The arrests come as part of Operation Spinney, which has been investigating reports made by men and women of sexual and physical abuse committed against them as children, predominantly at the former assessment centre.
The centre was the responsibility of the former Gwent County Council and has been closed since 1995.
Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Tuck of Gwent Police said: 'A team of detectives has been working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and local authorities as part of a long-running investigation into allegations of non-recent sexual offences relating to the former children's home in Abergavenny.
'This has resulted in us being able to charge two men for a number of sexual offences against children.
'We are committed to securing justice for the victims in this investigation and continue to support them alongside specialist agencies.
'We would ask for people to respect the judicial process and avoid online speculation on this case. This is to ensure the integrity of the investigation and court proceedings.
'We take all reports of child exploitation seriously and would urge anyone who has suffered abuse or has concerns about someone who may be suffering to come forward and speak to the police.
'We will listen to you and investigate all offences and also ensure you have access to any help or support you need.'
Hannah von Dadelszen, Chief Crown Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'The Crown Prosecution Service has received a full file of evidence from the Gwent Police and has authorised the investigation team to charge two defendants with multiple counts of child sexual offences.
'This charging decision was made by the Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, which has a team of specialist prosecutors to lead on these complex and sensitive cases.
'The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are now active and that they have a right to a fair trial.
'It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.'

Dashcam footage as banned driver reversed into police on M4
Christian Robjohn was jailed at Newport Crown Court for a series of driving offences in the early hours of November 7 last year. 'The utterly reckless and selfish driving which you displayed involved doing anything and everything to try to get away,' said Recorder Andrew Hammond as he jailed the defendant. Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir said a police officer in an unmarked car spotted a Skoda Octavia driving on Malpas Road in Newport at around 2.20am. The car's front and rear number plates didn't match, and the officer suspected the vehicle had been stolen. A stinger was deployed near Malpas Fire Station, and this punctured the car's front tyres. However, Robjohn continued up the slip road and on to the westbound M4. On the motorway, a number of police vehicles boxed Robjohn in against the central barrier and brought him to a stop. As one officer got out to arrest him, Robjohn revved his engine, reversed, and 'collided heavily' with the police car behind, Mr Gobir said. The officer arrested the defendant – who was on his phone. Checks revealed Robjohn was disqualified at the time, meaning he also had no insurance. Inside the car, officers found tools worth a total of £1,133.08 which had been stolen from B&Q in Cwmbran. Robjohn admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance, fraudulent use of registration plates, and handling stolen goods. (Image: Gwent Police) The defendant also admitted burglaries at three businesses in Cardiff on September 30, 2023, and breaching bail by failing to attend court. Mr Gobir said the managers of B&M and PureGym on Excelsior industrial estate in Cardiff and B&M in Pentwyn all received messages reporting break-ins at the stores. Robjohn and his co-defendant David Large used a Citroen Berlingo van to 'ram raid' the businesses, but they were both caught at the scene in Pentwyn. The court heard 43-year-old Large, of Ellwood Close in Trowbridge was sentenced to a community order for the burglaries. Mr Gobir said the defendant had 24 previous convictions for 50 offences, and that he had 'a very bad driving record'. Robjohn's defence counsel said his best mitigation for the driving offences was his guilty pleas. He said the 39-year-old defendant had viewed these proceedings as a wake-up call, and told him: 'I'm finished. I'm going to look after my family from now on and do the right thing'. The court heard that the defendant had already served the equivalent to a 21-month sentence in custody awaiting sentence and on licence. Robjohn, of Wakehurst Place in St Mellons, was jailed for a total of 21 months, meaning he will be released from prison imminently. He was banned from driving for three years, and must pass an extended retest.

Appeal bid over British teacher's extradition to Turkey dropped
Rebecca Richardson, 54, from Cradley in Herefordshire, was discharged from the extradition request at Westminster Magistrates' Court last month. Turkish authorities had sought her return over allegations she assaulted a young child while teaching at an international school in Istanbul in early 2019. Last month Judge Paul Goldspring gave the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) two weeks to consider whether to challenge the decision in the High Court. But at a brief hearing on Tuesday, the CPS confirmed it would not pursue an appeal. The court previously heard that Richardson left the UK in 2000 and spent nearly 20 years living abroad. She lived in Turkey between 2013 and 2019, but before that had lived in Mexico and Hong Kong, the extradition hearing was told.
