Dibrugarh: Security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from a border area near Namsai along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday. The operation was carried out based on information provided by recently arrested United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I) operational commander Rupam Asom.
The joint operation, executed by Assam Police, the 23 Assam Rifles and Military Intelligence (Kolkata), resulted in the seizure of one MQ rifle, three magazines and 120 rounds of ammunition. The weapons cache was concealed by a member of the proscribed militant outfit Ulfa-I.
The breakthrough came following the arrest of Rupam, a self-styled brigadier of Ulfa-I, who was apprehended by Tinsukia police on Saturday.
Rupam, an operational commander of the banned organisation, was captured from Lekhapani forest in Tinsukia district during a coordinated police operation.
"Based on information provided by Rupam, Assam Police, 23 Assam Rifles and Military Intelligence, Kolkata, questioned surrendered Ulfa-I cadre Biju Asom on May 24 and obtained details about the MQ rifle and ammunition," a police official said.
Security forces questioned Biju, a surrendered cadre of the militant outfit, who corroborated the information provided by Rupam.

The information provided by the arrested commander and the surrendered militant ultimately led the security forces to the concealed weapons cache.
According to police, Biju previously escaped from Rupam's group in Namsai on March 22, taking the MQ rifle with him. Following his escape, Biju subsequently surrendered before the SP in Sivasagar.
Rupam, who was nabbed on Saturday, has been implicated in multiple violent activities, including the 2018 killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the OC of Bordumsa Police Station.
His name had appeared in a chargesheet filed by the National Investigation Agency.
Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav said security forces are conducting extensive combing operations along the Assam-Arunachal border to apprehend other members of Rupam's group.
"The operation is still underway, and we are intensifying efforts to capture the other members of his group," the SP added.

Manipulated again: I-T busts fresh fraud in political donation tax deduction claims
In its continuing action against fraudulent tax deductions , the Income Tax (I-T) Department has found fresh cases of manipulation even after taxpayers were given the opportunity to correct their returns. According to officials, a number of individuals who had previously claimed deductions for political donations under Section 80GGC of the Income Tax Act have simply withdrawn those claims and shifted the same amounts to other deduction categories such as home loan interest and education loans. Earlier, the department had identified approximately 200 individuals whose high-value claims were suspected of being linked to tax evasion totalling ₹35 crore. Emails were sent to these individuals informing them that, during the verification of their income tax returns for the assessment years 2022–23 and 2023–24, deductions under Section 80GGC were found to be suspicious. Many of these claims, some running into lakhs of rupees, mentioned donations to both registered political parties and registered unrecognised political parties. After the Mumbai zone, the Telangana-Karnataka zone recorded the second-highest value of declared deductions under Section 80GGC. Of the ₹7,124 crore in deductions declared across the country, ₹1,641 crore came from this region. Within this zone, 15,223 employees in Telangana were suspected of having falsely claimed deductions for political donations. Despite the department offering a voluntary compliance window that encouraged taxpayers to withdraw incorrect claims and file updated returns within seven days, many individuals failed to respond to the notices. Among those who did respond, officials discovered that several had manipulated their updated returns. Meanwhile, many taxpayers who claimed deductions under Section 80GGC of the Income Tax Act, 1961, have received notices from the I-T Department. In response, the department has introduced a new facility on its portal. This feature provides guidance for taxpayers who have received notices under Section 158BC of the Income Tax Act, 1961, on how to respond. Live Events Section 80GGC of the Income Tax Act, 1961, allows individual taxpayers to claim deductions for contributions made to political parties or electoral trusts. These deductions are intended to promote transparency in political funding and are subject to specific eligibility rules, documentation requirements, and deduction limits. However, due to the increasing number of false claims being made under this provision, the tax department has initiated fresh measures to tackle the misuse of the deduction. Earlier this week, on Monday, the Income Tax Department launched large-scale search operations across the country targeting individuals and entities accused of facilitating fake tax deductions. Officials raided over 200 premises linked to people who were allegedly helping taxpayers to falsely claim deductions under various heads, including political donations, tuition fees, and medical expenses. A major focus of these operations was on deductions claimed under Section 80GGC, which allows contributions to registered political parties to be deducted from taxable income.

Cybercriminals used Haveri bank accounts for online fraud
Haveri: Cybercriminals across India have exploited bank accounts belonging to Bankapur residents in Haveri district for conducting online fraud. Several account holders received police notices from different states, leading them to register complaints with the CEN police. The operation involved multiple parties, including SIM card users, account holders and middlemen. Bankapur local Arifkhan Mukhashi lodged a complaint regarding these notices. A Kerala-based father-son duo are the primary orchestrators behind collecting bank account details in Bankapur. The suspects, Mohammad Abu and Mohammad Sahil, visited Bankapur under the pretext of selling halwa. Abu told some Bankapur residents that his son, Sahil, was involved in Bitcoin trading, generating substantial profits. He claimed they needed multiple bank accounts for Bitcoin money transfers as using a single account was problematic. They promised monthly payments to anyone willing to share their bank account details. More than 12 people trusted Abu and provided their account passbooks, SIM cards and ATM cards. More than 10 of these accounts received fraudulent transfers. The suspects operated these accounts and withdrew money. Subsequently, police from various states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala and Telangana, issued notices to the account holders regarding suspicious money transfers," Mukhashi said. He said after receiving the notices, they filed a complaint at Haveri CEN police station, where authorities assured them not to worry and promised to investigate. "In recent days, incidents of misusing bank accounts have been increasing, with account holders allowing money transfers for small benefits. The incident is under investigation, and we will track the suspects soon," said SR Ganachari, CPI, CEN police station of Haveri.
