Maharashtra: Ajit Pawar presents supplementary demands worth Rs 57,509 crore in assembly
Interestingly, a huge chunk of the funds, running to Rs 17, 465 crore, has been allocated to urban development department to improve infrastructure in urban local bodies. This gains significance in view of the upcoming elections to 29 civic bodies.
The supplementary demand for grants is a request made to the legislative assembly for funds beyond what was originally allocated in the annual budget.
During the last budget as well, finance minister Ajit Pawar had tabled the supplementary demands worth Rs 6,480.20 crore despite objections from the opposition.
The demands include Rs 19,183 crore for mandatory expenses while Rs 34,661 crore for state government schemes and programs and Rs 36,664 crore for central government sponsored schemes and programs. Rs 11,042.76 crore has been earmarked for various grants as per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission.
Next to urban development, public works department (PWD) has been allocated Rs 9068 crore to foot the bill of road contractors and execute various projects. The social justice department has been allocated Rs 3798 crore. The cooperative, marketing and textile department has been allotted Rs 2835 crore and the woman and child development department, Rs 2363 crore.

Citco to tie up with online platform to boost hotel bookings
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Industrial Tourism and Development Corporation (Citco) will tie up with a private online platform to increase the occupancy of three hotels — Mountview, Shivalikview, and Parkview. This will also help Citco generate more revenue. The decision was taken in the Citco board meeting held here Tuesday. A UT official said, "Citco will soon sign an MoU with the private entity, and thereafter, the hotels will be listed on the site. It will help the hotels become more competitive in the open market." The board also approved the renovation of Hotel Parkview – both the rooms and the parking space at a cost of Rs 98 lakh. The renovation will be taken up in phases. The board also decided to supply bulk diesel to the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking for its buses. Apart from IOCL and BPCL, which provide bulk diesel to CTU at its depots, CTU was also procuring fuel from private petrol pumps. Air India is fighting two battles in the wake of the AI-171 crash: one with grief, and another with fraud. As it tries to help families of the 260 people who lost their lives lost in the June 12 tragedy, Air India reported a series of fake handles cropping up on X (formerly Twitter), masquerading as official support accounts offering "help" to the families of victims. "We have flagged multiple handles that pretended to offer assistance. We don't want anyone to fall prey to fraudsters at such a vulnerable time," said a source familiar with the matter. On Day 1 alone, the helplines received more than 10,000 calls, many from inconsolable family members. "The volume was overwhelming, but it wasn't just that. The emotional trauma of listening to the raw grief of callers broke down many of our call centre staff. Some fainted, others needed counselling or medical help," the source said. Cheema defends Punjab's Rs 8,500cr loan plan, cites legacy debt & RBI limits
1 2 Chandigarh: Reacting to criticism of the AAP govt by the opposition for its plans to raise a loan of Rs 8,500 crore in the second quarter from July to September, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday said that the state govt planned to borrow funds to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt. He added that the loan was within the borrowing limits sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the projections made in the state budget 2025-26. "The opposition party leaders don't understand economics. Even their household budgets are made by their wives. From the US to our neighbouring Haryana, state economies borrow funds. However, it is being done within the prescribed limits and continuous attempts are being made to bring down the outstanding debt. The RBI has now allowed us to raise loans over the next three months," said Cheema, on the sidelines of a press conference on growth in goods and sales tax (GST) collections. "I had given the quarterly projections of the state's borrowings in the budget presented in March. The entire details were shared in the vidhan sabha. The cash-strapped govt would raise a loan of Rs 2,000 crore in July, Rs 3,000 crore in Aug, and Rs 3,500 crore in Sept. Replying to a media query, Cheema said that the state has to make interest payments of Rs 25,000 crore and principal payments of Rs 18,200 crore on legacy debt availed by the previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes in FY 2025-26, while planning to borrow Rs 49,900 crore, despite Rs 13,000 crore in deductions by the Centre. He added that the state govt planned to borrow Rs 8,500 crore to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt in the second quarter of the current financial year alone. "Punjab's fiscal management is on a strong footing, with the state govt taking proactive steps to manage its debt obligations.
