
CCS technologies gaining ground, but policy and cost barriers remain
Taher noted that several CCS technologies are currently being deployed, including post-combustion capture, pre-combustion capture suited for gasification, and emerging approaches like Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).
'Post-combustion capture uses amine-based solvents to strip CO2 from flue gases - ideal for retrofitting existing facilities,' explained Taher. 'Pre-combustion capture technology is also promising, converting fuel into hydrogen and CO2 before combustion, making it particularly effective in gasification plants.
DAC, which captures CO2 directly from the atmosphere, presents significant opportunities for negative emissions, while BECCS) combines biomass energy production with CO2 capture, offering a dual benefit of clean energy generation and carbon sequestration.
'These technologies are not just theoretical but are already laying the groundwork for a lower-carbon future,' Taher said.
According to the BCG executive, several large-scale CCS projects demonstrate the feasibility and impact of carbon capture technologies on a global scale. The Sleipner project in Norway, which has been operational since 1996, is a pioneer, storing approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually beneath the North Sea.
In Australia, the Gorgon Project stands out for its ambitious target of capturing 4 million tonnes of CO2 per year, showcasing how CCS can be integrated into natural gas processing. In the Middle East, the first commercial CCS initiative in the UAE captures 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from steel production.
'These projects provide a blueprint for future deployments, demonstrating how strong policy support, industry expertise, and innovative technologies can come together to achieve significant emissions reductions,' he said.
He acknowledged that while carbon capture methods are advancing, high costs, infrastructure gaps, and policy uncertainty continue to hinder large-scale deployment.

Why has CCS been slow to scale despite the increasing need for emissions reductions?
Despite the need for emissions reductions, CCS technologies face implementation hurdles such as high costs, infrastructure limitations, and policy uncertainties. High CAPEX and OPEX costs, along with efficiency losses, pose financial challenges, making CCS a less immediately viable approach when compared to other decarbonisation options.
Infrastructure gaps in CO2 transport and storage further limit scalability, while policy uncertainties and inadequate pricing mechanisms challenge project viability, highlighting the need for stronger and more consistent measures to support CCS investment.
Do you believe government incentives and policies are sufficient to drive CCS adoption at scale? What role do you see for private investment in CCS?
Current incentives are not yet sufficient to support the large-scale adoption of CCS. While there is growing political and regulatory commitment to decarbonisation, carbon pricing and tax credits are strengthening to create a stable and attractive market for CCS projects.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) play a key role in bridging this gap, enabling governments to de-risk investments while the private sector drives innovation. Emerging revenue models, such as CO2 utilisation in fuels, chemicals, and building materials, offer new opportunities for business case improvement.
Some studies suggest that CCS technologies may not effectively reduce CO2 emissions and could even increase energy consumption. How do you respond to these concerns?
Concerns about the energy penalty associated with CCS technologies are justified, but ongoing technological advancements are steadily improving efficiency and reducing energy demands. While CCS processes do require additional energy, continuous improvements in capture technologies are bridging this gap.
As a result, high capture rates are already achievable. Both post-combustion and pre-combustion methods can remove over 90 percent of CO2, demonstrating the effectiveness of CCS in real-world applications. This is particularly important in hard-to-abate sectors such as cement & steel, where electrification is difficult or not viable.
Rather than viewing CCS as a perfect solution, it should be seen as a critical component of a broader decarbonisation strategy, complementing renewable energy and other low-carbon technologies to achieve net-zero goals, particularly in industries where carbon emissions are otherwise challenging to mitigate.
With MENA holding 10 percent of global operational CCS facilities, how should it capitalise on its early-mover advantage?
The MENA region has a unique opportunity to build on its early-mover advantage by expanding CO2 infrastructure through the development of regional transport and storage hubs. Utilising the region's deep oil and gas expertise to repurpose depleted reservoirs for CO2 storage can reduce costs and increase storage capacity.
To strengthen its leadership in CCS, the region should also focus on boosting policy support by introducing more substantial carbon pricing and incentives that encourage investment and innovation. Integrating CCS with low-carbon hydrogen production could help the region set a global benchmark, blending economic growth with climate action.
What is the one misconception about CCS that you believe needs to be corrected?
There are several. A persistent misconception is that "CCS is a distraction from renewables." In reality, CCS complements clean energy by targeting hard-to-abate sectors where electrification is not feasible.
Another misconception is that "CO2 storage is unsafe." However, decades of geological storage projects have demonstrated the safety and stability of this approach.
Additionally, the belief that "CCS is too expensive" is inaccurate. Costs are declining as the technology scales, making CCS a more viable option for industries striving to achieve net-zero emissions.

A Landmark Global Trial Led from Lebanon: Mitapivat in NTDT Published in The Lancet
In a major advancement for global thalassemia care, the results of a landmark global phase 3 clinical trial of mitapivat in non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) led by the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Chronic Care Center, the thalassemia center in Lebanon, have been published in The Lancet, one of the world's leading medical journals. The study, titled 'Phase 3 trial of mitapivat in non-transfusion-dependent alpha- or beta-thalassemia,' led by Dr. Ali Taher, professor of medicine at the Division of Hematology and Oncology, director of the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute, and consultant at the Chronic Care Center served as both global principal investigator and first and corresponding author. It is the first to demonstrate the efficacy of an oral, disease-modifying therapy for both beta and alpha forms of NTDT, positioning mitapivat as a potential game changer in the treatment of this lifelong blood disorder. 'This publication is more than a scientific milestone,' said Dr. Taher. 'It's proof that Lebanon, even in its hardest times, can lead groundbreaking medical advances that change global standards of care. I'm proud this trial was conceived, led, and delivered from AUB and the Chronic Care Center.' NTDT is a lifelong inherited blood disorder that results in chronic anemia. Patients with NTDT do not require blood transfusions, but still suffer from chronic anemia and associated complications, including iron overload and reduced quality of life. Until now, therapeutic options for these patients have been limited. Mitapivat is currently under review by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for potential marketing authorization. If approved, it would become the first FDA-authorized oral disease-modifying treatment for NTDT, offering a transformative option for thousands of patients worldwide. The phase 3 trial met all of its primary and secondary endpoints, demonstrating statistically and clinically significant improvements in hemoglobin levels, alongside favorable safety and tolerability profiles. This work represents the culmination of over a decade of research, beginning with redefining the disease and understanding the morbidity and mortality risks of untreated anemia and iron overload. It builds on prior global efforts led from AUB that resulted in the approval of key therapies, including iron chelation through the THALASSA trial and luspatercept through the BEYOND trial. Both studies were led by Dr. Ali Taher, whose vision and leadership have been instrumental in transforming the global approach to thalassemia care. Widely recognized as one of the foremost experts in the field, Dr. Taher has played a central role in advancing treatment standards and improving outcomes for patients worldwide. His long-standing commitment to thalassemia research has not only shaped the current therapeutic landscape, but has also positioned Lebanon and AUB at the forefront of international medical innovation. This achievement serves as a powerful affirmation of AUB's role as a beacon of academic and clinical excellence, firmly committed to advancing health through research, education, and patient-centered innovation. UAE approves robo-advisory services for licensed portfolio management firms
The UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) on Tuesday allowed licensed portfolio management firms to offer robo-advisory services, marking a strategic step toward establishing a secure digital investment environment in the country. The regulator said it approved the regulation of the robo-advisor service, allowing firms to provide services through digital platforms that utilise artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and advanced algorithms to deliver automated investment recommendations. To ensure investor protection, the SCA's regulatory framework sets mandatory independent IT audits, rigorous cybersecurity standards, regular reviews of algorithms and systems, and full disclosure of the service's costs and risks. Portfolio management services are typically provided by large banks and financial firms to their high-net-worth clients and private companies, enabling them to grow their wealth and achieve their financial goals. These firms provide tailored investment strategies, asset allocation and ongoing management of investment portfolios. According to Boston Consulting Group's Global Wealth Report 2024, the UAE's net wealth reached $2.9 trillion in 2023 as financial wealth grew by 10 per cent from 2022 to 2023. These services uphold high standards of governance, transparency, and investor protection within the approved portfolio management frameworks, whether discretionary or non-discretionary and in accordance with client agreements. Waleed Saeed Al Awadhi, CEO of the SCA, said this project reinforces the UAE's position as a world-class financial centre by advancing continuous innovation and implementing dynamic regulatory frameworks designed to address future market challenges. India Leads World in Generative AI Take‑Up
Over ninety per cent of employees in India use generative artificial intelligence tools at work, with 92 per cent logging daily use, according to a recent report by the Boston Consulting Group. This figure places India well above the global average of about 72 per cent. The BCG study, based on a survey of 10,600 workers across 11 countries, highlights India's prominence in integrating generative AI. Alongside this, some 17 per cent of workers report that their organisations have embedded AI agents into daily workflows, ranking India among the top three nations globally for such integration. High adoption has come with heightened concern. Nearly half of Indian employees—48 per cent—believe their roles are at risk of disappearing within the next decade due to AI, outpacing global levels at 41 per cent. Anxiety is compounded by low levels of understanding and guidance: only 33 per cent say they comprehend how AI agents function, while just 36 per cent feel they have received adequate training. ADVERTISEMENT Despite these concerns, AI is delivering tangible productivity benefits. Almost half of Indian users report saving more than an hour per day through AI assistance, yet only one‑third receive support in leveraging that time for strategic tasks. Workflow redesign is emergent as a key differentiator: companies that pivot beyond tool deployment to reengineer tasks, offer structured training, and secure leadership backing are achieving stronger outcomes. Experts cite several critical enablers for successful AI adoption. In‑person upskilling, access to approved AI platforms, and visible executive endorsement dramatically enhance uptake. In fact, where frontline workers report robust leadership support, regular usage jumps from 41 per cent to 82 per cent. Security and governance issues remain pressing. About 46 per cent of workers worry that AI decisions lack sufficient human oversight, 35 per cent fear bias or unfairness, and 32 per cent question accountability for errors. Parallel research highlights that 92 per cent of executives flag security vulnerabilities—ranging from cyber‑attacks to data privacy—as major hurdles in AI implementation. India's trajectory is supported by robust public and private investment. The UN Trade and Development's 2025 Technology and Innovation Report names India tenth globally in private‑sector AI investment. Infrastructure initiatives, such as the IndiaAI Mission's goal to build one of the world's largest AI compute networks by 2027, are bolstered by efforts from academia and industry. Centres of excellence at institutions like IIT Delhi and IIIT Hyderabad, alongside corporate alliances, are driving innovation and applied AI solutions. AI's impact is felt across sectors. In public services, digital infrastructure and chatbots are enhancing citizen access. In agriculture, finance and healthcare, predictive analytics and generative AI are reshaping service delivery. Private‑sector growth projections suggest India's AI services market could reach up to US $17 billion by 2027. Nonetheless, workforce readiness remains uneven. While 74 per cent of participants in a Microsoft‑sponsored skills programme hailed from smaller towns—and 65 per cent were women—skilling delivery is uneven, with many employees still left to self‑learn or rely on unauthorised tools. For companies seeking competitive edge, the insight is clear: widespread tool usage alone does not guarantee impact. Only by pairing AI with thoughtful workflow redesign, ethical governance and targeted training can businesses capture the full value of generative intelligence.
