Alliance Bank launches Sarawak SME ESG Report

The Sun18-06-2025
KUCHING: Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd recently launched its inaugural report titled Navigating ESG In Sarawak: Insights From SMEs (Sarawak SME ESG Report), a landmark initiative aimed at advancing the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak.
The Sarawak SME ESG Report was developed through a comprehensive study conducted with the support of the Sarawak government, InvestSarawak, Monash University and United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB).
The report was officially launched by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, at the Hydrogen Economy Forum (H2EF) held in Kuching.
The launch was also attended Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni and MINTRED Sarawak Deputy Minister Malcolm Mussen Lamoh.
Also present were the report key strategic partners InvestSarawak, Monash University, and UNGCMYB.
The Sarawak SME ESG Report offers valuable insights into the current levels of ESG awareness, adoption, and the challenges faced by SMEs across Sarawak, providing practical recommendations to guide businesses on their sustainability journey.
In the foreword of the report, Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak's commitment to embedding sustainability at the core of its economic development, in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030
(PCDS 2030).
'This comprehensive report not only underscores the progress made by Sarawakian businesses but also highlights areas where support and intervention are necessary. By aligning their practices with ESG principles, SMEs can bolster their resilience, competitiveness, and contribute significantly to Sarawak's sustainable future.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah, in the foreword, said, 'Our companies are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of ESG principles and are actively seeking pathways to implement them.'
Invest Sarawak, a key partner in this report is committed to supporting SMEs in overcoming challenges related to ESG adoption, including providing clarity, financial support, and facilitating capacity-building opportunities.
InvestSarawak CEO Timothy Ong said: 'ESG practices are increasingly vital for businesses to remain competitive, attract investment, and ensure long-term viability. The findings presented in this report clearly demonstrate that Sarawak's SMEs recognise the importance of sustainability, with a significant number already taking tangible steps to embed ESG into their business strategies.'
The Sarawak SME ESG Report reveals promising momentum among SMEs, showing that six in ten SMEs in Sarawak are aware of sustainability issues, and 66% have already begun implementing ESG practices including a portion who are unconscious adopters. Among non-adopters, 98% indicated a strong intention to adopt ESG measures, with 59% planning to act within the next two years.
The leading motivators for SMEs to adopt ESG practices include meeting the evolving expectations of consumers, suppliers, and investors. Despite these positive trends, challenges such as limited resources, staffing constraints, and navigating various ESG frameworks were cited as key barriers to wider adoption.
Alliance Bank group CEO Kellee Kam (pic) said: 'Delivering a Sarawak focused report is not just timely, it is essential. The state-specific ESG report provides a deeper understanding of the realities faced by local businesses. This enables us to identify both the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead. The data gathered will empower businesses to make informed decisions while also serving as a benchmark that encourages the adoption of best practices across industries.'
He added: 'We recognise the challenges that stand in the way. Many businesses face limitations in terms of resources, staffing, and clarity – especially when confronted with numerous frameworks and fragmented information.
'Access to financing remains another hurdle. These are real issues that we must address collectively. We hope that the report is able to provide critical guidance to SMEs, helping them build capacity and access useful tools and resources as they navigate their ESG journey.'
Speaking on the research component of the report, Monash University Malaysia CEO and pro vice-chancellor and president Professor Datuk Adeeba Kamarulzaman said: 'This initiative brings together government, academia, industry, and civil society, underscoring the collective effort needed to advance sustainability.
'The research component of this collaboration involves a state-wide study that offers critical insights into ESG practices among SMEs.
'The findings support the development of policies and strategies that help SMEs integrate ESG principles, enhancing their resilience and competitiveness while contributing meaningfully to Sarawak's sustainable and inclusive growth'.

SSM North Zone InfoSession Enhances Governance, Compliance Literacy

GENERAL BUTTERWORTH, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) organised the 2025 SSM North Zone InfoSession Programme today to strengthen governance, enhance compliance literacy and support the development of a more transparent and sustainable business ecosystem. It said that the programme, attended by over 200 participants from various government agencies, local authorities, the corporate sector and individuals involved in business data management and regulation compliance, was also used as a platform to introduce SSM's three latest products. 'They are the Electronic Beneficial Ownership System (e-BOS) - a system for updating beneficial ownership information as required under the Companies Act 2016 and the Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP) Act 2012 - as well as e-Advertisement, which is the official platform for advertising statutory information for companies and LLPs, including notices of appointment, dismissal, changes in information or company closure. 'These services enhance transparency, speed up processes and reduce costs. The third product is the Company Secretary Information Data (CSID) - a comprehensive search tool for information on the credentials, Practising Certificate and professional status of registered company secretaries,' it said in a statement today. The SSM said that in addition to a briefing session related to the provision of corporate information and interest schemes, participants were also introduced to various SSM digital services, such as MyData-SSM, SSM Search, SafeData SSM and SSM e-info, which are aimed at helping users access valid and up-to-date business data. It also said that based on SSM statistics up to June 30, a total of 1,619,700 companies have been incorporated, 9,520,598 businesses and 43,301 LLPs have been registered nationwide, and from the total, 693,619 companies, 1,692,266 businesses and 38,567 LLPs are active. 'As for Penang, 105,225 companies have been incorporated and 686,739 businesses and 2,621 LLPs have been registered with SSM for the same period. Of the total, 48,151 companies, 123,493 businesses and 2,277 LLPs are active,' it said. Meanwhile, SSM chief executive officer Datuk Nor Azimah Abdul Aziz said at the closing ceremony that corporate information provided by SSM is not merely data, but a strategic asset that forms the basis for important decisions by investors, business owners, financial institutions and the public. 'Programmes like the SSM InfoSession are crucial for showing that the provision and use of corporate information is no longer a choice, but a necessity. It is the backbone of transparency, market confidence and the integrity of the country's economy,' she said in the same statement.

Bintai Kinden's FY2025 financial statements deemed 'true and fair' by external auditor

KUALA LUMPUR: Bintai Kinden Corp Bhd says its audited financial statements for the financial year ended March 31, 2025 (FY25) have been deemed true and fair by its external auditors HLB Ler Lum Chew PLT. In a statement today, Bintai Kinden said the assessment was made despite a technical qualification concerning figures from the previous year. Bintai Kinden said the technical qualification stems from the auditors' inability to obtain sufficient evidence regarding opening balances for liabilities, trade receivables and contract assets from FY24. As a result, the auditors could not determine whether adjustments were necessary to FY2025's profit or loss and retained earnings. Crucially, the qualification does not relate to FY25 transactions, and the auditors confirmed the financial statements otherwise present a true and fair view of the group's current financial position. Bintai Kinden reiterated that the issue raised pertains only to legacy balances and does not reflect any material misstatements relating to FY25's accounts. The company has since undertaken corrective measures to enhance financial transparency and accountability. Bintai Kinden managing director cum chief executive officer Datuk Tay Chor Han said while the audit qualification reflects a technical issue relating to past records, it does not take away from the progress the company made this year. "Our focus remains on restoring profitability, strengthening governance, and regaining investor confidence," he added. Bintai Kinden said it has already begun seeing the fruits of its restructuring. As of June 30, 2025, the group's unbilled construction order book stood at RM128.61 million, providing strong earnings visibility. The mechanical and electrical (M&E) division is also expected to contribute positively in the current year, following the resolution of a dispute with Tenaga Nasional Bhd. With the regularisation plan fully implemented on May 21, 2025, and a clearer financial footing in FY25, the company is optimistic about being uplifted from PN17 status in the current financial year.
