Property wars break out on lavish island after man 'cuts down his neighbor's tree to give himself an ocean view'

Daily Mail19 hours ago
A property feud has erupted on a wealthy Massachusetts island after a brazen neighbor allegedly chopped down someone's 50-year-old trees to carve out an 'ocean view' for himself.
Patricia Belford, 80, has accused Jonathan Jacoby, 55, of breaking onto her Nantucket property and cutting down 16 trees without her permission in February.
According to a $1.4 million lawsuit, Jacoby removed decades-old cherry, cedar and Leyland Cypress trees from the home 'with the specific purpose of improving the ocean view from his own property' - which he is trying to sell.
Belford and Jacoby are next-door neighbors sharing a property line, but most of the trees taken down were far from that border, Belford says.
Jacoby has been accused of doing the unauthorized landscaping to make his stunning 4,491-square-foot beach compound at 3 Tautemo Way more appealing to potential buyers.
In its Zillow description, the contemporary home, listed at just under $10 million, has 'sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean' and Hummock Pond.
Hummock Pond, a salt-water pond on the southwestern part of Nantucket, and Cisco Beach are just fractions of a mile away from Tautemo Way.
And the only things inhibiting those 'sweeping views' of the nearby bodies of water were apparently the trees the Belfords planted in the 1970s.
When the trees were slashed, Matt Erisman, the property manager of Belford's $4.2 million home, notified the Nantucket Police Department (NPD), prompting an investigation.
Belford herself does not live at the property, located at 1 Tautemo Way, but in an assisted living facility, according to the Nantucket Current.
Jacoby's former landscaper, Krasimir Kirilov, voluntarily told investigators Jacoby was responsible.
In a police statement submitted as lawsuit evidence, Kirilov said Jacoby reached out to him for help cleaning up landscaping work he was going to do on his own.
Once he realized the work was not on Jacoby's property, Kirilov refused the offer.
'The NPD concluded that Jacoby entered the property knowingly and willfully and cut the trees for his own personal benefit,' the lawsuit reads about the ongoing investigation.
Nantucket Police Lieutenant Angus MacVicar told the Nantucket Current there are pending charges against Jacoby.
Belford, who is suing on behalf of her family's trust, argued the trees added not only privacy, but value to her home - with a nursey estimating they each could cost thousands of dollars.
'Based on the number of trees removed, the replacement cost alone exceeds $486,000,' the document, filed on June 23, states.
'This does not account for the historic value, loss of screening, increased noise, reduction in overall property value.
'Jacoby's actions were not only economically damaging but also emotionally devastating for Belford.'
Nantucket has become a hot spot for wealthy vacationers looking for a beach getaway.
The average home price on the ritzy Massachusetts island was roughly $4.5 million as of May 2025, according to Realtor.com.
Only about 14,200 people live on Nantucket year-round - compared to the more than 80,000 that swarm the island for the summer, according to US Census data.
It is unclear if Jacoby lives in Nantucket fulltime, and his lawyer did respond to the Current's request for comment.
'The way I feel is that I am confident once all of the facts and evidence have been presented, that justice will be served,' Erisman told the outlet.
'However, much of what has been taken from the Belfords is irreplaceable, and it's sickening.'

BREAKING NEWS Angelina Jolie's neighborhood sees trespasser… after ex Brad Pitt had home broken into

Cops arrested a trespasser in a Los Angeles neighborhood that's home to A-listers including Angelina Jolie. On Sunday law enforcement detained an individual who entered the Los Feliz enclave by slipping through a gate. The unwelcome visitor had made it onto the street where Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard live when police caught up with him, according to TMZ. It was noted that the actress and actor were not home at the time. Insiders said that both security and residents called the police on the 'known' suspect, who tried to make a run for it before he was arrested. Footage shared on the public safety app Citizen showed officers on the scene, with the male trespasser briefly seen. The accused person reportedly did not break into any of the neighborhood's mansions, one of which belongs to actress Brie Larson. It comes shortly after Jolie's ex-husband Brad Pitt's home was broken into while he was in Tokyo. His neighbors have suggested security at the mansion may have been compromised in the days leading up to the dramatic break-in. They claim they had not seen an unmarked private patrol car normally stationed right outside the actor's driveway for several days before the raid. Pitt's home in Los Feliz was ransacked during a late-night burglary on June 25 while the 61-year-old star was overseas promoting his new film, F1: The Movie. It was the latest in a string of burglaries plaguing upscale neighborhoods across LA and Southern California, where celebrities have increasingly been hit. Locals told the Daily Mail the 24-hour security car had been a constant presence since Pitt bought the 2,100 sq ft home from an oil heiress in March 2023 — just a ten-minute walk from ex-wife Angelina 's $25 million estate. An aerial view of Pitt's home in Los Angeles But in the days before the break-in, the neighbor said they could not see the vehicle — or the guard inside it — leading them to speculate about laxer security measures. 'Ever since Mr Pitt moved in two years ago there was always a security car in the street, day and night,' said one neighbor, whose home overlooks Pitt's. 'It suddenly disappeared a few days before the burglary but we have no idea why.' By June 30, the regular security detail had returned, with a male guard seen sitting in a small black car outside the property — though he declined to speak to the Daily Mail. It appeared security had been bolstered, with a second vehicle, a black Prius, also parked at the top of Pitt's steep driveway. Earlier that day, neighbors spotted workmen from a glass installation company arriving at the house, believed to be replacing a window smashed by the intruders during the break-in.

Moment Utah strip mall explodes in massive blast after vehicle crash

A witness video captured the dramatic moment when a large explosion tore through a strip mall in Utah on Saturday night, triggering evacuation alerts to residents in the area. Herriman police confirmed in a statement on social media that a vehicle crash caused an explosion and structure fire in the area. Following the incident, residents on Terra Cruz Lane and Parasol Lane were advised to evacuate over concerns of a gas leak, police said. There was no immediate report of injuries from the authorities
