FM asks NIIF to leverage its sovereign-backed design, explore diversified finance sources
on Monday asked the
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund
(NIIF) to leverage its
sovereign-backed design
to showcase its performance at the global stage.
Chairing the 6th meeting of the Governing Council (GC), Sitharaman exhorted the NIIF to have a proactive approach to fundraising and the need to explore diversified sources of financing, the finance ministry said in a statement.
The Rs 40,000-crore NIIF was set up in December 2015 as an institution to enhance
infrastructure financing
by investing in greenfield, brownfield and stalled projects.

The quasi-sovereign wealth fund's assets under management have increased to more than Rs 30,000 crore.
Recognising NIIF's growing role in mobilising capital into infrastructure and other key sectors of the
Indian economy
is in line with the national priorities, the GC appreciated NIIFs performance and took note of the expansion in AUM, it said.

The Governing Council appreciated NIIF's evolution as a sovereign-linked asset manager and acknowledged the efforts made over the years to build strong partnerships with marquee investors like Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, pension funds, multilateral development banks and strategic government counterparts like the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
The council also reviewed the performance and way forward across its four active funds -- Fund for Infrastructure (Master Fund), the Fund of Funds (Private Markets Fund), the Fund for Climate and Sustainability as well as India Japan Corridor (the India Japan Fund), and the fund with focus in growth equity (Strategic Opportunities Fund), the statement said.
It also appreciated that both Master Fund and Private Markets Fund are already 100 per cent committed and that a part of Master Fund investments have gone into the creation of greenfield assets in areas like ports and logistics, airports, and data centres.

Reviewing the progress of NIIF's upcoming
Private Markets Fund II
, which has a target corpus of USD 1 billion, the GC appreciated the fact that PMF II has successfully onboarded private investors in line with the earlier guidance and is set for its first closing shortly.
NIIF informed about the progress of the proposed bilateral fund currently under discussion with the US, the statement said.

But over two years on, justice has been served as a consumer commission has ruled in her favour, ordering the company to refund the amount with interest and pay compensation. Impressed by assurances of high-quality standards and delivery, she engaged its services and made an advance payment of Rs 5 lakh on March 20, 2023, through a demand draft — a payment the company acknowledged. Another revised estimate was sent on Sept 12. By then, Latha had already completed portions of the work with another vendor because of the unacceptable delay. She then requested the company to refund the advance paid, but the firm expressed its inability to do so. Instead, it offered to execute and deliver select furniture items — a foyer shoe rack, foyer seating, console, and crockery unit — and on Oct 18, 2023, sent an estimated bill of a little over Rs 9 lakh, which left her in shock. Latha alleged that the advance amount of Rs 5 lakh was not deducted from the new bill. When she questioned this, the company told her that the advance would be adjusted only if she entrusted it with the complete furniture contract. Latha expressed her willingness to pay the balance as per the latest invoice, but the company refused to proceed with any work, insisting on the full contract. It also declined to refund the advance. After repeated follow-ups for a refund yielded no results, Latha issued a legal demand notice on Aug 2, 2024. In its reply, the company claimed that the Rs 5 lakh wasn't an advance for furniture work, but rather a design fee for services, effectively denying her request for a refund. Aggrieved by the firm's conduct, on Jan 9, 2025, she filed a complaint with the IV additional district consumer disputes redressal commission, alleging unfair trade practices. Despite being served a notice, the firm was absent and was placed as ex parte. After going through all the evidence, the commission observed that the firm had failed to deliver the promised designs and furniture despite receiving an advance payment. It also noted that the company's claim that the Rs 5 lakh paid was not an advance but a design fee was untenable. In the absence of any defence from the company, the forum concluded that the complainant had successfully proved the allegations. Holding the firm guilty of careless and negligent service, the commission declared it was liable to refund the advance amount. The company has been ordered to refund Rs 5 lakh with 6% interest from the day of payment, aside from shelling out Rs 25,000 for service deficiency, Rs 10,000 for the complainant's pain and suffering, and Rs 10,000 as litigation costs.

Authorities expedite Angamaly-Kundannoor bypass land survey
Kochi: Expediting works of the proposed Angamaly-Kundannoor bypass on NH 544, revenue authorities decided to complete survey process of land acquisition by Aug 15. Authorities informed that, aiming to expedite the process, more officials would be assigned for survey duty. Currently, there are 14 survey officers and there was a demand to increase the number of surveyors as initial land acquisition procedures were delaying indefinitely. It is learned that revenue authorities are planning to increase the number from 14 to 40. Services of additional draftsmen will also be provided for the survey team. A recent review meeting led by district collector NSK Umesh decided to hold a meeting every Monday to evaluate progress of the survey. It was in Aug 2023 that ministry of road transport and highways issued a 3A notification for land acquisition for the bypass project. However, preliminary stage of acquisition is yet to be completed and landowners have launched protests against the delay. The road project was delayed indefinitely due to uncertainty over govt decision on royalty and GST. Central govt, which agreed to bear the entire cost of construction and land acquisition for the bypass project, demanded state govt to waive its share of GST and royalty on construction materials. State govt will have to forego Rs 424 crore due to exemption of GST and royalty. As per estimate submitted by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), GST share of state is Rs 254.4 crore and royalty on materials is Rs 169.6 crore. A total of 280 hectares from 17 villages in the district would be acquired for the road project. Alignment of the 44.7-km-long greenfield bypass road was approved by NHAI in Jan 2023. The road will begin from Karayamparambu on northern side of Angamaly town and will end at Kundannoor Junction on NH 66, which is going to be developed into a six-lane highway.

‘Blessed by Goddess Kali, Indian armed forces displayed valour in Op Sindoor'
1 2 Lucknow: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the Indian armed forces have the special blessings of Goddess Kali and during Operation Sindoor , they displayed amazing bravery in destroying terrorist camps on Pakistani soil. Speaking at the inauguration of a newly-built Badi Kali temple in Lucknow's Chowk area, the Lucknow MP said that women soldiers and pilots participated in the Operation Sindoor in large numbers and defeated the enemy. The defence minister said the 26th anniversary of the Kargil War is being celebrated this year. "We should remember all the heroes, including Captain Manoj Pandey (of Lucknow), who made the supreme sacrifice for Mother India. The Indian Army regiment in which Captain Pandey served is called the Gurkha Rifles. The slogan of the regiment is Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gurkhali. Mahakali is the inspiration for bravery in this country," he added. Singh expressed deep reverence for the Badi Kali temple, believed to be over 2,000 years old and established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. He cited the late Lalji Tandon's writings, which mention the temple's ancient origins and spiritual significance. Singh praised the community's active role in the temple's development and acknowledged the govt's support, especially the efforts of tourism minister Jaiveer Singh. He emphasised that the temple is not just a place of worship but a cornerstone of Lucknow's cultural and spiritual identity—standing tall even before the city itself took shape. Reflecting on his personal connection, Singh said he felt blessed to serve as Lucknow's representative, attributing his journey in public life to the grace of Badi Kali Maa. He fondly remembered literary icon Amrit Lal Nagar, who dedicated his life to the service of the Goddess. Singh also announced plans for a new satsang hall and a yoga centre within the temple complex, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for devotion and wellness. He highlighted the Modi govt's commitment to cultural preservation, citing projects like the Kashi Vishwanath and Mahakal Corridors, as well as the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Meanwhile, deputy CM Brajesh Pathak emphasised the spiritual importance of Goddess Kali in every auspicious household event. Tourism minister Jaiveer Singh credited the govt's efforts in reviving and promoting Sanatan culture and traditions, which, he said, have now reached new heights.
