T-Mobile Might Finally Switch to 36-Month Phone Payment Plans
If you're a T-Mobile customer, the next time you upgrade your phone you may be asked to keep it for an extra year. New leaks suggest T-Mobile is preparing to introduce 36-month payment plans for the first time.
According to The Mobile Report, an internal T-Mobile document shows multiple references to 36-month Equipment Installment Plans (EIP). The carrier currently doesn't have these plans, though rivals AT&T and Verizon moved to a 36-month structure in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Alongside the internal document, T-Mobile briefly changed its website for Galaxy Watch EIPs to show 36-month deals. The website read, 'Starting at $10.56/month for 36 months' on a listing for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 in its 44mm version. It's unclear if anyone managed to sign up.
These deals have since been removed, and T-Mobile has moved back to 24-month offers. It's now showing a price of $15.84 a month over a two-year period. Both of these offers come out to $380.16, which is as close as possible to the watch's $379.99 price.
If T-Mobile does move to 36-month EIPs, it's likely because the carrier wants to lock customers into services for longer periods rather than increase the amount made from the product loan. Other carriers that have moved to 36 months as the norm have said it's better for customers as the monthly repayment is lower.
For some customers, that may be true, but others will be frustrated by the fact they won't be able to upgrade as quickly, or that they won't be able to easily switch wireless providers.
We asked T-Mobile for comment, and we'll update this story when we hear more.
T-Mobile has stood out compared with AT&T and Verizon by not making this move over the last few years. It could continue that goodwill with customers if it chooses to offer both 24-month and 36-month options for EIPs at the same time.
T-Mobile's app was recently updated to record your phone's screen when you're navigating around its T-Life service. The feature was brought in to help the brand 'troubleshoot' issues, but it can be turned off within the settings of the app.

T-Mobile boots customers off yearslong offers without asking
Over the past few months, T-Mobile (TMUS) has been pushing customers to make a major change that has made a few uncomfortable. It started when T-Mobile hiked the prices of its older phone plans (One, Magenta, Simple Choice, and Go5G 55) by $2 or $5 per line in June last year, angering customers. Then, in April, it issued another price increase for some of its older phone plans, hiking monthly prices by $5. That suspicion became clearer that same month when T-Mobile introduced its Experience More and Experience Beyond phone plans, which are essentially upgraded versions of its Go5G Plus or Go5G Next plans with five-year price lock guarantees. The phone carrier announced that starting Aug. 13, it will boot select customers off of older phone plans and place them onto its Go5G Plus plan (which doesn't include taxes and fees in the price). According to some users on Reddit, who claim to be T-Mobile employees, this change will impact customers on Magenta Plus, MAX, Sprint Max, and ONE Plus plans. Also, customers on segmented plans such as 55+, First Responder, etc., will be moved to similar versions on Go5G Plus. T-Mobile says this will be a "free upgrade," and any free lines, discounts, and perks customers may have on their current plan will also migrate to Go5G Plus. Related: Verizon hopes a new tactic will fix fleeing customer problem "Beginning with your next bill cycle after August 13, we're upgrading your plan to Go5G Plus, which includes all the benefits you already have and more at no extra cost-like better deals on phone upgrades," said T-Mobile on its website. "You'll also get more high-speed data, like 50GB of hotspot data and 15GB of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico." Customers with price locks on their current plans won't be migrated to Go5G Plus; only those on older phone plans who were impacted by recent price increases will be moved. The change from T-Mobile comes after it officially retired its Go5G plans in June. This means that new customers were revoked the ability to sign up for those plans, while older customers could remain on them. T-Mobile's latest move also comes during a time when it is struggling to retain loyal customers. In its second-quarter earnings report for 2025, T-Mobile revealed that while it attracted 830,000 new postpaid phone customers, its postpaid phone churn (the number of customers who cut their phone service) increased by 10 basis points year-over-year. A recent report from MoffettNathanson found that Comcast, Spectrum and Altice USA gained 886,000 new phone customers during the first quarter of 2025, up from the 804,000 they added during the same quarter in 2024. During the third quarter, T-Mobile anticipates churn will either decrease year-over-year, remain flat, or slightly increase. I still love VLC, but this lightweight video player changed the game for me
Andy Walker / Android Authority VLC Player has been my go-to video app for years, dating back to the good ol' Windows XP days. That loyalty progressed to Android, and I still use it across desktop and mobile for my video content needs. While it remains a powerful product, VLC often feels cumbersome when I crave simplicity. Why opt for a piledriver when you need a chisel? I searched for a secondary player for more immediate video viewing tasks a few months ago and discovered Next Player. Although it's not as feature-rich as VLC, this is to its benefit. I believe the veteran player could learn a lot from this underdog. I'm never more than two screens away from the home screen, and since I've set up the environment to my liking, I rarely have to revisit these menus. Its clean design initially attracted me, but Next Player's strength is its straightforward functionality. The home screen's organizational options are somewhat customizable, but it displays only folders containing supported content by default. This makes it easy to jump into a directory and start watching content immediately. While VLC often hides important icons behind an overflow menu, Next offers immediate access to core controls on the player screen. VLC Player Next Player I have a habit of accidentally swiping or tapping on the screen or seek bar while watching content, leading me to lock content when it's on my display. Next Player's lock icon is conveniently located at the screen's bottom left corner, whereas VLC's is hidden in its overflow menu. I prefer not to tap multiple times to access this vital setting, so Next Player wins this battle. Overall, Next Player's controls are more relevant to my experience than those provided by VLC. I don't always need to select a subtitle track, but I often want to pop out my video player or adjust the playback speed. Yes, VLC has more options on tap, but the controls I use most aren't readily available. I wish both players allowed users to customize which icons are on screen, but Next Player suits my needs best for now. I find Next far smoother when accessing anything on the player screen. Single-tapping to bring up or hide icons is performed with a fluid, swift animation. It excels at streaming media and casting to supported devices. VLC also lets me browse audio files, create playlists for uninterrupted viewing or listening, or switch to its Android TV app on my Chromecast. These are features that Next Player doesn't have.
