Safe Haven: Silver Up 27% Since Start of 2025
Silver prices in the local market surged by 3% over the past week, supported by a global rally that saw the metal's spot price break above $38 per ounce, posting weekly gains of 4%, according to a report by the Safe Haven Hub center.
This strong performance was driven by growing investment and industrial demand amid a global supply shortage and escalating trade tensions, particularly following recent tariff measures announced by the U.S. administration.
The price of 800-purity silver rose by EGP 1.5 during the week, climbing from EGP 50.50 to EGP 52 per gram, while globally, the ounce price increased from $36.86 to $38.32.
According to the report, local silver prices have jumped by 27% since the beginning of 2025, gaining EGP 11 per gram (800 purity), having opened the year at EGP 41. Meanwhile, the global ounce price surged by 32%, rising from $29 to $38.32—its highest level in 13 years.
The global silver market is entering a new phase marked by rising borrowing costs, declining liquidity in markets such as London, and widening price spreads between major exchanges like COMEX and the London Bullion Market. These indicators reflect growing instability and imbalance in the precious metals sector.
In the U.S., increased silver premiums suggest tighter supply and stronger physical demand, helping drive prices to unprecedented highs.
At the same time, copper prices rose by 13% following Washington's decision to impose a 50% tariff on imports, widening the price gap between exchanges and pushing investors toward silver as an industrial alternative, given the strong correlation between the two metals.
Silver has surged by 34% since its April lows. Platinum, meanwhile, has risen by 66%, approaching $1,500 per ounce, while gold has stabilized around $3,355. This rapid rebound in silver prices indicates a strong comeback for the 'grey metal,' particularly with its recent outperformance relative to gold.
According to the Silver Institute, holdings in silver-backed financial products exceeded 1.13 billion ounces by the end of June 2025, with net inflows totaling 95 million ounces over six months—surpassing last year's full-year total.
Industrial demand is also expected to reach 677.4 million ounces this year, fueled by the growing green energy sector, particularly solar panels and photovoltaic technologies.
However, the market continues to face a persistent supply deficit for the fifth consecutive year, amid production disruptions in major mining countries like Mexico and Russia, declining reliance on primary silver mines, and a market that depends 70% on secondary silver extracted from other metals.
With silver crossing the $35 mark in June, several analysts now view the $50 target as within reach, especially given the historically low levels of free-flowing silver available for sale—estimated at just 155 million ounces.
Analysts at Citi Bank project further gains, predicting silver could reach $40 within 6 to 12 months, and possibly touch $46 by Q3 2025, driven by tight supply, strong demand, and continued investment momentum.
Straddling its dual identity as a safe haven during crises and a vital industrial input for the clean energy transition, silver is proving itself to be more than just a precious metal—it is a strategic asset reshaping its place in the global market landscape.
With trade tensions rising, supply shrinking, and industrial demand growing, silver is poised to be the standout performer in the second half of 2025—potentially even outshining gold.

Gold Prices Fluctuate Despite Rising Safe-Haven Demand
Waleed Farouk Gold prices, both locally and globally, experienced volatility during trading on Monday, despite the global ounce price climbing to a three-week high, supported by increased demand for gold as a safe-haven asset amid escalating trade tensions between the United States, the European Union, and Mexico. In the local market, gold prices gave up their early gains. The 21-karat gold lost the morning's upward momentum, settling at EGP 4,660 per gram, the same as last week's closing price. Globally, the ounce erased its initial gains, stabilizing at $3,355. Gold prices in the local market were as follows: 24-karat: EGP 5,326, 18-karat: EGP 3,994, 14-karat: EGP 3,107, Gold pound (8 grams of 21k): EGP 37,280 Last week, gold prices rose by EGP 20, starting at EGP 4,640 and closing at EGP 4,660. Globally, the ounce gained $18, moving from $3,337 to $3,355. The recent movements in gold prices have been driven by renewed trade fears, following Washington's announcement of plans to impose 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico starting in early August, after the failure of recent negotiations to reach a comprehensive agreement. These declarations triggered concern in global markets, prompting investors to hedge through gold, amid warnings of potential negative impacts on international trade flows. Brussels and Mexico described the proposed tariffs as 'unfair and destabilizing.' Meanwhile, the European Commission announced an extension of its suspension of retaliatory measures until early August, in hopes of reaching a diplomatic resolution. In another development, investors are awaiting the release of U.S. inflation data for June, scheduled for Tuesday. These figures are expected to offer insights into the Federal Reserve's interest rate direction over the coming months. Market expectations currently point toward a potential 50 basis-point rate cut before the end of the year. Such a move would likely enhance gold's appeal as a hedge asset that, while non-yielding, tends to outperform in low-interest environments. Data from the SPDR Gold Trust—the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund—showed that its holdings declined by 0.12% on Friday, dropping to 947.64 metric tons from 948.80 metric tons the previous day. Additionally, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported a decline in speculative positions on gold, with net long contracts falling by 1,855 in the week ending July 8, bringing the total to 134,842 net long positions. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream

Expert Predicts Gold Prices Could Surpass $3,800 per Ounce
Waleed Farouk Economic analyst Osama Zarei stated that gold has shown clear bullish technical signals this week, following a period of sideways movement. He expects prices to exceed $3,500 in the medium term, supported by a narrowing resistance zone around $3,430, which represents a key technical barrier. A breakout above this level could pave the way for further gains toward $3,700–$3,800 per ounce. Zarei noted that markets are currently focused on the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for July 30, as the results and any forward guidance on interest rate cuts are expected to have a significant impact on gold's trajectory. He added that expectations of lower interest rates typically support gold prices, as the metal becomes more attractive compared to fixed-income assets that lose appeal in low-rate environments. Zarei explained that short-term forecasts suggest gold could rise to test the $3,430 level. The price is expected to find key support at $3,350 and $3,335, which may serve as launch points for a potential rebound toward $3,400. However, if gold breaks below $3,300, the market may shift to a more cautious and uncertain stance. On a longer-term horizon, Zarei reaffirmed the strong possibility of gold rising to $3,700, with a potential to reach $3,800 or even $4,000. He expects these levels to materialize during the September to October period, reflecting confidence in the continuation of bullish macroeconomic drivers. According to the latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report, there have been no major shifts in large trader positions. The share of managed money long positions fell slightly to 45.4% of open interest, while short positions also declined to 16.3%. This indicates a balanced investor sentiment, with no abrupt moves toward buying or selling. At the same time, gold futures continue to break out of their previous sideways pattern — a technical sign of growing momentum — supported by an accumulation of long positions. A report by Apollo Global Management sheds light on a silent crisis tied to the resumption of U.S. federal student loan payments. Nearly 45 million borrowers are now facing repayment pressures, with a default rate of 24%, threatening to downgrade the credit scores of over 11 million Americans. This could severely restrict their ability to finance essential purchases like vehicles and home appliances, weakening consumer spending — the main driver of the U.S. economy. This situation draws alarming comparisons to the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, which led to a systemic collapse with a delinquency rate of less than 10%. Today, student loan delinquencies have surpassed 24%, raising questions about why the market hasn't yet collapsed. Student loans represent roughly 9% of total household liabilities, and disproportionately affect the 30–59 age group, which is vital to sustaining consumption. As credit conditions worsen, the economy faces a heightened risk of demand-side stagnation. It's worth noting that the subprime crisis erupted at just 8–10% delinquency, while the current 24% in student loans is staggering. The main reason the market hasn't collapsed is due to the gradual absorption of losses by the government. The student loan sector, along with the silent support for higher education as an industry, is effectively in decline. Policy Implications and Gold's Strategic Advantage Given these dynamics, the Federal Reserve may be compelled to implement interest rate cuts in the coming months, possibly alongside a new round of quantitative easing (QE). These measures could be necessary to avoid broader economic deterioration. In such scenarios, gold stands to benefit the most, being a traditional safe haven in times of financial uncertainty. A comprehensive analysis of gold's behavior in relation to broader macroeconomic forces reveals a strong connection between monetary policy, credit conditions, and financial asset performance. Gold continues to show resilience and upward strength, bolstered by expectations of rate cuts and potential QE. Meanwhile, the student loan crisis casts a shadow over the U.S. economic landscape. The government's capacity to absorb these credit shocks will be crucial in determining the near-term path of the economy. In this environment of volatility and structural stress, gold remains an attractive investment instrument for those seeking capital protection and long-term stability. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream
