CBI Busts International Tech Support Scam Syndicate In Noida, 1 Arrested
Noida: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has busted a transnational cyber fraud syndicate that was operating a sophisticated fake tech support scam targeting citizens in the United Kingdom and Australia. The agency arrested a person in connection with the case. The action is part of the agency's ongoing Operation Chakra-V. The syndicate operated through a fully functional fake call centre under the name FirstIdea, located in the Noida Special Economic Zone. In a coordinated raid conducted on Monday, CBI sleuths searched three locations in Noida and caught fraudsters in the act - live scam calls were detected as the operation was synchronised with the time zones of targeted victims. The group posed as technical support agents of reputed multinational companies such as Microsoft, tricking unsuspecting foreign nationals into believing that their devices were infected or compromised. They would then extort money under the pretext of providing "tech support" for non-existent problems. Acting on credible intelligence, the CBI registered a case and launched the operation with support from the FBI (USA), the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), and Microsoft Corporation. During the searches, investigators seized advanced calling infrastructure, malicious software scripts, and documents that revealed the large-scale nature of the scam. The syndicate had developed systems that ensured anonymity and enabled cross-border targeting on a significant scale. A key operative, identified as a partner in the FirstIdea operation, has been arrested and is being produced before the Special CBI Court today, July 8. The CBI has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting cybercrime and reiterated its resolve to collaborate with international law enforcement and tech giants to bring such criminals to justice. Through Operation Chakra-V and similar initiatives, the Bureau is actively working to dismantle cybercriminal networks operating across borders. The arrested person's name is Nishant Walia, who is a partner in Firstidea.

15-Year-Old Pregnant After Stepfather Sexually Assaults Her: Meghalaya Police
A 38-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting his 15-year-old stepdaughter in Meghalaya. The accused, who had been on the run, was arrested from Ri Bhoi district earlier today. According to East Khasi Hills police sources, the teenager revealed to her mother that her stepfather had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions and that she was now pregnant. The teen girl was admitted to a government medical facility and her pregnancy test was positive, police sources added. A case has been registered at Mawlai Police Station in Shillong under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police sources added further. "On July 1, we received the complaint at Mawlai police station of alleged sexual assault by a girl's stepfather. We immediately started the investigation. He tried to evade arrest," said Herbert Kharkongor, SP, City, Shillong.

Harassing Juniors Through Informal WhatsApp Groups To Be Treated As Ragging: UGC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed higher education institutions to monitor any informal WhatsApp groups created to harass juniors, saying it will be treated as ragging and attract strict action under anti-ragging rules, according to officials. The UGC receives dozens of complaints every year from freshers alleging harassment by seniors. "In several cases, seniors form informal WhatsApp groups, contact juniors and subject them to mental harassment. This too amounts to ragging and will invite disciplinary measures," the UGC said in its latest directive. "Student safety on campus is paramount and non-negotiable. Failure to enforce anti-ragging norms may lead to stringent action, including withholding of grants," it warned. The advisory also flagged incidents where juniors were threatened with social boycott if they did not follow seniors' instructions. Forcing students to cut their hair, stay awake for long hours or verbally humiliating them were cited as other common ragging practices. "Such acts cause physical and psychological distress and are serious violations of anti-ragging regulations and completely unacceptable," it said.
