Baby food and kitchen staples teeming with toxic plastic additives, study warns – even in GLASS jars

COMMON foods have been found to be teeming with concerning levels of toxic plastic additives by scientists - including baby foods and meals in glass jars.
Baby foods like pureed vegetables and fresh meat were among the foods found to contain high quantities of plasticisers - chemicals added to plastics to make them more flexible and easier to handle.

The highest levels were found in microwave-in-a-bag vegetables like broccoli and potatoes.
After just five minutes of cooking, ATBC (a chemical compound used as a plasticiser) in these foods increased 50-fold, according to the new study from experts at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research in Barcelona, Spain.
Cooking oils were found to contain the least amount of plasticisers, out of the 109 foods studied.
Plasticisers have been linked to a variety of health concerns, including reproductive issues and developmental problems.
In the study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, scientists analysed over 100 foods sold in Spanish supermarkets looking for traces of more than 20 different harmful plastic additives.
The foods were categorised into eight groups - baby foods, condiments, fish products, eggs and dairy, meat, oils, fruit and vegetables and cereals, legumes and sweet products.
Products were tested for chemicals before and after cooking.
Concerning levels of the different plastic additives were detected, including organophosphate esters (OPEs) which were found in 85 per cent of the products.
Studies have shown associations between OPE exposure and impacts on respiratory health, endocrine function, and even potential carcinogenic risks.
High levels of tyltributyl citrates (ATCBs) and DEHAs were also detected - chemicals commonly used in food packaging such as clingfilm to make it bendy.

The highest amounts of OPEs, ATCBs and DEHAs were found in meat and baby food.
Phthalates are a type of plasticiser also used to make plastics more flexible, durable and transparent.
Also classed as a ' forever chemicals ', while some phthalates can be rapidly excreted, many aren't removed from the body quickly, and may persist for longer periods.
Because of this, many food manufacturers have made use of alternative substances to create plastic packaging.
But the scientists behind this new study say the alternatives may carry as many risks.
Co-author Julio Fernández-Arribas said: "The results presented in this study confirm the presence of various types of plasticisers in foodstuffs, and emphasises the potential source of exposure to new alternative plasticisers whose long-term health effects are under scrutiny."

Interestingly, there were significant differences in DEHA and ATBC levels across foods by packaging type.
ATBC was predominantly detected in foods packaged in glass containers, likely due to migration from plasticised coatings in lids.
While DEHA was mainly found in fresh foods wrapped in plastic.
The long-term effects of microplastics on human health are still not fully understood, though emerging research highlights concerns they may accumulate in the body and contribute to various health issues.

What are microplastics and why are they a worry?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than five millimetres in diameter.
They come from a variety of sources in our everyday life, from larger pieces of plastic debris, such as from the degradation of bottles, to the tiny beads in personal care products like toothpaste and exfoliants, and synthetic fibres from textiles like polyester and nylon.
We can either ingest them, for example in food and water contaminated with them, or inhale them from the air.
There is growing concern about the potential health impacts of microplastics on both the environment and human health.
When ingested or inhaled, microplastics can cause physical and chemical damage to living organisms.
Studies have shown that they may be involved in inflammation in the body by leading to the release of proteins called inflammatory cytokines.
While these studies are typically small and in animals or cells, inflammation is linked to a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
Cellular damage has been a key focus of studies on microplastics.
The tiny pieces of plastic have been shown to cause cell death, cause damage via oxidative stress, and interfere with hormone function.
There is also evidence to suggest that microplastics can cause genotoxic effects, meaning they can damage genetic material within cells - raising fears they can contribute to cancer.
The evidence is still evolving for these tiny particles that are barely visible to the naked eye.

It comes after a Brit mum's 'horrendous' death after being scratched by a puppy with rabies on holiday. ‌ The British mother endured "horrendous headaches" before losing her ability to walk or speak, ultimately succumbing to rabies following a "mild scratch" from a puppy whilst on holiday, her daughter has revealed. Yvonne Ford, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, was holidaying in Morocco with her husband in February when she encountered the stray dog that had been resting beneath her sunbed. However, due to the seemingly insignificant nature of the scratch, the 59-year-old dismissed it entirely, only falling seriously ill months later upon returning to the UK, prompting a visit to Barnsley Hospital. ‌ Her daughter Robyn Thomson described how the rabies progressed gradually, initially disrupting her mother's sleep patterns before robbing her of the ability to speak or swallow. The grandmother-of-four also began experiencing hallucinations and developed hydrophobia. She was subsequently moved to Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where medics finally identified the rare yet devastating virus, and tragically she died on June 11. Neonatal nurse Robyn, 32, from Barnsley, described her mother as a "huge animal lover" who possessed the "biggest heart". ‌ "[Mum] was the most loving person imaginable. She had the biggest heart. She was my best friend and the most fantastic grandparent to mine and my brother's children. She was a huge animal lover so for her to have died of rabies - it is just particularly horrendous. She will be missed so dearly," she said. Robyn revealed that her mother's passing came as an enormous blow to the entire family, particularly given the lengthy period before symptoms emerged, explaining: "She and dad were on a holiday in Morocco and they were on a private beach next to the hotel. There was a puppy underneath mum's sunbed and it scratched her leg. "There was no blood and no evidence of the dog being unwell. It was such a mild scratch and it never got infected so we just thought nothing of it at the time. Mum came home and everything was normal. We went to Florida as a family and she went fishing with my dad. "But in June she came down with this horrendous headache. She was in a lot of pain so went to hospital. Soon, she couldn't sleep, she couldn't walk, she couldn't talk. She was hallucinating and had a fear of water. She couldn't swallow. She was choking on her own saliva. So doctors put her in an induced coma. "It wasn't until over a week later that she was diagnosed with rabies. There's only one outcome for rabies once symptoms develop and it's death every time. So we had to turn off her life support." The family later discovered that whilst rabies symptoms typically manifest after several months, the lethal virus can remain dormant for as long as two years.

Eating lean beef could be less damaging to your gut than eating chicken, according to a controversial new study. While red and processed meat have been linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer and heart disease, poultry had, until now, been considered a less risky source of protein. In the study, Spanish researchers analysed how chicken and beef affected the gut microbiome of 16 healthy individuals, mostly aged between 18 and 22-years-old. They found that whilst both diets—which were followed for a period of eight weeks— had an impact on gut bacteria, the chicken-based diet was associated with a significant decrease in microbial diversity and richness. The gut microbiome—the community of friendly bacteria that live in the gut and communicate with the brain—is essential for protecting against infection and disease. After eating a chicken-based diet, participants were also found to have higher levels of harmful bacteria in the gut, which has been linked with a number of diseases including bowel cancer. Interestingly, they found that the beef-based diet led to a significant increase in Blautia bacteria which plays a key role in protecting the mucus barrier in the gut, warding off inflammation and disease. In the study, participants were instructed to follow their usual diet and randomly assigned to eat Pirenaica beef—which is naturally high in potassium, zinc and vitamin B—or chicken three times a week. Chefs prepared the cuts using standardised cooking methods including grilling, stewing and roasting. The nutritional value of both diets, including protein and fat sources, were similar in both groups. Participants then had a wash-out period of five weeks between the two diets, in which they resumed their normal diet. Stool samples were collected at the beginning and end of each diet-period. The researchers found that the chicken-based diet negatively affected the body's ability to process glucose—a type of sugar—which interfered with blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels often change in the day but it is important to try and keep levels stable. According to the NHS, low blood sugar below 4mmol/L can be dangerous if left untreated causing seizures, sleep disturbances, loss of consciousness and heart palpitations. They also found that this diet lead to a decrease in the production of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins—which are essential for immune function and gut health. Writing in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, they concluded: 'These findings suggests that the integration of lean red meat from beef into a healthy dietary pattern could positively influence not only the gut microbiome but also some health indicators.' The study had several limitations which the authors acknowledged. One is that although dietary intake was assessed using a questionnaire and diet quality was considered, diet was self-reported which means some foods that could have a significant impact on gut bacteria may have been missed. It comes as concerning research has suggested that regularly eating chicken could double the risk of dying from 11 different types of cancer, including bowel and stomach. Italian researchers found those who consumed over 300g of poultry—equivalent to about four portions—per week, had double the risk of dying from a digestive cancer, compared to those who ate less than one portion. Whilst they admitted they couldn't be sure why this increased risk occurred they theorised that it could be due to high cooking temperatures or the feed given to poultry. According to Cancer Research UK, 21 per cent of bowel cancer cases are caused by eating red or processed meats. Scientists believe this is linked to certain chemicals naturally present in meat, introduced during processing of produced when it is cooked as high temperatures. However, the NHS states that eating meat, as part of healthy balanced diet, helps provide protein which builds and repairs muscles, as well as produces hormones and enzymes. Meat is also rich in vitamin B12, a key component in keeping the nervous system healthy. The health service advises people who eat about 90g red meat — about three thin slices of roast beef — per day to try and cut down to 70g.

The Canary Islands have issued an alert saying eight people have been struck down by food poisoning in the popular Spanish holiday destination A beloved holiday hotspot for British travellers has been struck by a severe health scare, prompting authorities to issue an urgent warning. ‌ The Canary Islands have raised the alarm after eight individuals were affected by the outbreak. ‌ Officials from the Canary Islands Government's Department of Health have released a statement confirming that both the La Palma Health Area Directorate and the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) Directorate-General for Public Health are "investigating a case of food poisoning on the island that has so far affected eight people". ‌ The food-related illness, triggered by eating fish bought from unofficial suppliers outside regular distribution networks, has impacted eight individuals, with one person requiring hospital treatment at the University Hospital of La Palma. Public health chiefs have launched their emergency procedures, begun the necessary epidemiological investigation, and are maintaining surveillance for any additional cases that might emerge, reports the Liverpool Echo. Both the La Palma Health Area Directorate and the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) Directorate General of Public Health, operating under the Department of Health, are conducting the inquiry. ‌ The initial cases of this food-borne disease were identified on Tuesday July 22, just two hours following consumption of the tainted product. Those affected received medical attention at the Emergency Service of the Los Llanos de Aridane Health Centre, where staff immediately implemented food poisoning protocols upon suspicion of contamination. Tests conducted identified histamine contamination as the likely cause of the poisoning. ‌ Common symptoms of this type of poisoning include a burning or itching sensation in the tongue and throat, a peppery taste in the mouth, facial and neck redness and swelling, hot flushes, hives on the palms, face, head and ears, headaches and dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Officials have urged holidaymakers to verify the source of fish before consuming it. The Canary Islands are a part of Spain. ‌ In 2023, Spain reported 35 outbreaks of histamine poisoning affecting 275 individuals, with one major incident involving 154 patients. Typically, symptoms appear within an hour of consumption. Histamine production is often linked to improper food handling, particularly incorrect storage temperatures. Once formed, histamine cannot be eradicated by standard cooking or freezing temperatures.
