Ind vs Eng: Why have pitches in England become batting-friendly?

Time of India6 days ago
Pitches in England during the ongoing summer have been uncharacteristically flat, not only in the
India vs England Test series
, but also in County Championship and the India U-19 vs England U-19 matches.
After the Youth Test between the Under-19 teams ended in a draw at Kent County ground in Beckenham last week, the curator was asked if the Indian Test team requested any special kind of pitches for their practice session.

'It's been a long summer and a lot of cricket has been played. Even if they ask for anything, I won't be able to give them,' the curator replied.

The locals at Manchester are calling it a "beautiful summer" as the sun has been blazing down barring the rain in the last few days.
Weather and pitches have been a constant topic of discussion. India pacer Akash Deep, on his first tour of England, expected encouraging seam and swing but the bubble was burst in the first India 'A' game he played before the Test series.
Live Events
Before the series started, England team's managing director Rob Key observed that the increasing amount of cricket has played a part in the pitches getting flatter over the years. 'There are a lot of tired squares. They've got more cricket than ever now that The Hundred and women's cricket are in every county,' Key analysed.
As seen in the first three Tests between India and England, the pitches have lost zip. At Edgbaston, England captain Ben Stokes even said that the conditions resembled the subcontinent.
Former England captain Andrew Strauss, too, leaned on the narrative. 'With cloud cover and a bit more moisture in the surfaces, you're going to get a little bit more live grass. Therefore, it's going to seam and swing a bit more. So, the weather's played perfectly into India's hands so far ,' Strauss told TOI during the Lord's Test.
The "Bazball" style of play, which is a batting-dominated approach may have also played a role in the kind of pitches being rolled out. Another former England captain Michael Vaughan brought up this point during a chat with TOI.
'For England to play this style of cricket (attacking batting), if you play on green tops, they are going to get bowled out quite quickly. I would think that England want to play on flatter wickets to play the expansive brand of cricket,' Vaughan reckoned.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta, who has been a broadcaster for the seires, pointed out that the ground staff struggle to maintain moisture after all the grounds were made sand-based to improve drainage.
'A few of the ground staff told me that all the rainwater drains out so quickly that it dries up the surface quickly. In fact, the ground staff in Birmingham had to recently put cardboard sheets besides the main square so that the main square remains moist longer,' Dasgupta told TOI .

What prompted BCCI to agree to India vs Pakistan clash in Asia Cup 2025 despite recent border tensions? Details

The announcement of the India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 has created a lot of buzz even two months before the high-octane clash in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Saturday revealed the dates of Asia Cup 2025 with the IND vs PAK encounter scheduled for September 14. If all goes well, the arch-rivals could face each other thrice in the tournament. The dates of the Asia Cup 2025 were finalised after an ACC meeting on July 24 in Dhaka, chaired by president Mohsin Naqvi. BCCI was represented by vice-president Rajeev Shukla through a video call after the Indian board refused to travel to Bangladesh due to the political situations in the neighbouring country. Ever since the Asia Cup 2025 dates were announced on Saturday, former cricketers have raised their voices over the IND vs PAK clash. The two countries had come close to the brink of war following the Pahalgam attack, to which India responded with Operation Sindoor. But the biggest question is what prompted the BCCI to go ahead with the Asia Cup 2025 despite the recent tensions? Well, the answer to this is India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics in the country. Although India doesn't play any bilateral series with Pakistan in any sport in more than a decade, the India's no objection in multilateral competitions against their arch-rivals is deemed as a necessity if they were to get the hosting rights of the Olympic Games in 11 years time. Recently, the Government of India has allowed the Pakistan hockey teams to compete in the Asia Cup and Junior World Cup to be held in the country later in the year. Meanwhile, India could possibly face Pakistan thrice in the tournament. After the league stage, the top two teams from the groups will qualify for Super Fours. The top two teams in Super Fours will play in the final. After the Group A India vs Pakistan clash on September 14, the arch-rivals are expected to face again in Super Four. If all goes well, an India vs Pakistan final is on cards. The previous edition of the event was in a 50-over format, but this year's tournament was scheduled as a shorter-format event in preparation for next year's T20 World Cup in India. The final of the Asia Cup 2025 will be held on September 28. However, the venues are yet to be decided.

Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja Engage In Tense Chat As 'Handshake' Row Hits 4th Test

Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja engaged in a tense chat following the end of the fourth Test encounter between England and India at Old Trafford on Sunday. The tensions began when Stokes offered to end the match in a draw with 15 overs to go on Day 5. However, the offer was declined as both Jadeja and Washington Sundar were close to their centuries. Both batters went on to reach their respective milestones but they were targetted with taunts by Stokes and Co. Once the match ended, Stokes did not shake hands with Jadeja and Washington at first and got into a chat with the all-rounder. However, he ultimately shook hands with both batters as they left the field. Ben Stokes refused to shake hands with Jadeja & Washi⁰~ What's your take on this #INDvsENG #INDvsEND — Kavya Maran (@Kavya_Maran_SRH) July 27, 2025 Stokes, who was visibly irritated after India refused to declare for a draw, said he was not going to risk his first string bowlers given the result of the match was decided heading into the final hour. Stokes offered to shake hands and declare the fourth Test during the final drinks break but with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar nearing their well deserved hundreds, India made England bowl till the duo reached their milestones. However, Stokes employed Harry Brook and Joe Root as the two bowlers, allowing his pace battery to rest. "All the hard work was done by India and there was only one result ... I wasn't going to risk any of my bowlers, (Liam) Dawsey had bowled a lot of overs and his body was tiring. I wasn't going to risk any of my front line bowlers,' said Stokes in the post-game presentation. The England skipper scored a century, whilst also claiming five wickets, but claimed he would 'give this all back to get the result that we wanted.' After India lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the opening over, all hopes seemed lost for the visitors. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill stood tall on Day 4 and navigated through the day before Sundar and Jadeja put on a 223-run stand and refused to let the game slip away from them. Despite the animated moment towards the end, Stokes tipped his hat towards the duo and admitted England threw everything at them but they absorbed the pressure well. "Heap load of credit for the way Washington and Jadeja played, got to give them a lot of credit. to do what they did for that position. It's been a back and forth series so far, throwing punches at each other, great credit to the way India have kept fighting. We threw absolutely everything at them but they were able to absorb the pressure."

ENG vs IND 4th Test: Nasser Hussain slams Ben Stokes for tossing the ball to Harry Brook - 'It looked silly'

England captain Ben Stokes certainly looked like he had plenty to say to Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar during that tense little period when they declined to shake hands on a draw. (Getty Images) Former England captain Nasser Hussain slammed Ben Stokes for his "silly" reaction after he tossed the ball to Harry Brook in what seemed like a mark of protest. Drama unfolded during the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy match in Manchester on Sunday after Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar declined England skipper Ben Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the start of the final hour of play. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington — batting on 89 and 80 respectively — flatly refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England captain no end. "I didn't have a problem with it. I mean, I know England seemed to have a problem with it," Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports. "They're a little bit tired — tired bowlers, tired legs — they wanted to get off. The two lads had worked hard to get into the 80s and 90s; they wanted Test match hundreds. "Stokes didn't have to bowl Brook, and it looked a bit silly at the end there, but we make far too much of these things. They played well, they deserved a draw, they deserved to be there at the end. "All credit to India. It's only England's second-ever draw under this Bazball regime — the other one on this ground as well, because of rain. This one was a draw simply because England couldn't roll over the two left-handers, who were brilliant." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mr. Gopal's Laxman Rekha Strategy: The Ultimate Guide to Winning Trades TradeWise Learn More Undo Poll Do you agree with Nasser Hussain's view that Ben Stokes' reaction was 'silly'? "Do you want to score a hundred against Harry Brook?" Stokes asked sarcastically, to which Jadeja simply replied, "I can't do anything." A smiling Jadeja maintained his grace and ticked them off, as India — in accordance with the rules — were well within their rights to continue batting. In what seemed like a mark of protest, Stokes introduced Harry Brook into the attack, and Jadeja hit him for a six to complete his third Test hundred.
