Most popular video game-inspired baby names of 2025 revealed
Baby name books may no longer rule supreme with parents turning to the gaming universe for inspiration
From much-loved names passed down through generations to titles inspired by a romantic trip you took with your partner before falling pregnant, there are many instances in life that contribute to what we name our child.
However, an expert has revealed that traditional baby names in video game characters are inspiring parents worldwide, meaning our penchant for the digital world is actually influencing some of the biggest choices we make in real life.
Remember frantically choosing a name for your Skyrim character or Sims family? Now parents are facing that same excitement - and pressure - when naming actual humans.
"Gaming is such a big part of modern culture, it's part of who we are," Serge Eliseeff, CEO of Online Free Games, explained. "The characters we connect with through hundreds of gameplay hours become meaningful to us. So it makes perfect sense that their names would top the list when parents are brainstorming baby names."
To see which video game names are trending in nurseries, Online Free Games analysed global Google searches for baby name queries related to famous gaming characters.
They tracked search patterns over the past year for names from IGDB's top 100 games, looking at how often people searched things like '[name] baby name' or 'is [name] a boy or girl name.'
So, from badass heroines to legendary outlaws, read on to see the video game character names parents are hitting "select" on for their little players.
Topping the list is Jade, the protagonist from Ubisoft's cult classic Beyond Good & Evil. As a photojournalist fighting against alien conspiracies, Jade represents courage and determination.
The name, meaning ' precious stone,' bridges traditional appeal with gaming cool factor. Though the original game came out in 2003, anticipation for the long-awaited sequel has kept Jade relevant in gaming culture.
The name's somewhat gender-neutral sound and short, punchy style fits modern naming trends, while still honouring gaming history.
Coming in second is Max, the time-rewinding photography student from Life is Strange. This choice highlights the growing preference for shorter, unisex names that work across gender lines.
Max (short for Maxine in the game) represents a character known for compassion and complex decision-making.
The name's gender flexibility mirrors current naming trends, with parents increasingly choosing names that work for any gender. Life is Strange's likely resonates with millennial and Gen Z parents who grew up gaming.
Rounding out the top three is Arthur, after Arthur Morgan, the rugged outlaw with a heart of gold from Red Dead Redemption 2. Classic names can clearly get a popularity boost when connected to compelling modern characters.
Arthur, meaning 'bear' or 'noble,' delivers traditional masculinity with a touch of cowboy cool. The character's redemption arc and moral complexity make him more than just a typical video game protagonist, giving the name depth and resonance for parents who appreciate nuanced storytelling alongside Western aesthetics.
The rest of the top 10 features a balanced mix of classic and contemporary names. Lee from Telltale's The Walking Dead and Isaac from the horror series Dead Space represent strong male options. Meanwhile, Faith from Mirror's Edge offers spiritual meaning alongside gaming cred.
Apollo from Ace Attorney brings mythological weight, while Chloe from Uncharted and Claire from Resident Evil represent timeless female options. Surprisingly, the iconic Link from The Legend of Zelda barely makes the top 10, suggesting parents may prefer names that blend more easily into traditional naming conventions.
"What we're seeing here is the natural evolution of how culture shapes our most personal choices," Serge went on. "Parents have always named children after heroes – it's just that today's heroes are more likely to be virtual.
"The popularity of names like Jade and Arthur shows that parents are looking for names with substance and meaning. They're choosing characters known for their courage, resilience, and moral complexity – qualities any parent would want their child to embody.
"It's fascinating to see how the lines between virtual worlds and real life continue to blur, with video games now influencing one of the most significant decisions a parent can make."

BBC fans surprised by 'outrageous moment' during JADE's Glastonbury set
While performing her song Gossip, featuring Confidence Man, JADE said the swear word **** - and some people were shocked that it aired on BBC in the middle of the afternoon BBC viewers have reacted to an outrageous moment during JADE's Glastonbury set in which she used a swear word on live TV. The singer, 32, made her debut at the music festival today and during her performance she paid tribute to her Little Mix bandmates, saying being part of the girl group changed her life. But JADE also admitted she is happy to be working on her own music now. During her set on the Woodsies stage, she performed songs from her upcoming album That's Showbiz Baby! as well as iconic Little Mix songs including Shout Out to my Ex, Woman Like Me and Touch. But at one point, she used the word "c--t" while performing her song Gossip, featuring Australian electro pop band Confidence Man. Fans were left surprised that the word wasn't beeped out from the BBC streaming of the festival in the afternoon, and many took to social media to share their thoughts. One tweeted: "Jade dropping the word **** at 15:52 on a sunny summer afternoon at Glasto? Like I said, ICON!!" Another said: "Jade said **** live on the BBC and it's not even 4pm. Icons only." One more wrote: "This year's #Glastonbury catchphrase is definitely 'Tina thinks you're a ****.'" Someone else expressed: "Jade dropping the word **** was not on bingo card." On BBC iPlayer, the livestream comes with a disclaimer: "Contains very strong language and flashing images." JADE became emotional as fans sang along with her and at one point she paid tribute to her Little Mix co-stars Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards. Jesy Nelson was also part of the group originally, before her departure in 2020. While performing at the music festival, the singer said: "Firstly, shout out to Little Mix. I can't begin to explain how grateful I am to those girls for literally changing my life and who would have thought then that we would have a Little Mix girlie up here on the Glastonbury stage. But I can't lie, it feels good doing my own songs that I've written from my heart." She continued: "That was the old me, now it's time for something new." She then told the crowd she would bring out some special guests, as she welcomed Confidence Man to the stage. JADE also used her performance to boldly express her disdain for Reform UK while delivering a rousing rendition of her hit FUFN. The track, an acronym for 'F*** you for now', features a segment where JADE reels off a list of things she'd like to give the middle finger to. During her set, she chanted: "Reform! Transphobia! Selling arms! Genocide!", with the crowd echoing back a resounding "F*** you." Earlier this week, Jade promised fans her performance would be "a big a-- SHOW" and on Saturday morning she posted, "It's a big one @glastonbury. See you on the Woodsies stage at 3.15pm. Make sure you get down early!! f you're not at the festival, you can watch my set live on @BBCiPlayer." Her performance received a lot of praise as festival-goers cheered her own throughout her set - and those who couldn't attend the festival shared their thoughts on social media. "Jade getting emotional at the Glastonbury crowd singing along with her is making me cry, so proud of her," a fan tweeted. Another said: "This little mix medley Jade is doing at Glastonbury is making me emotional." Another said: "It's criminal that Little Mix never performed at Glastonbury but having Jade perform a Little Mix medley is the next best thing." One more said: "JADE IS KILLING THIS." Someone else said: "JADE really is the whole package isn't she. Absolute superstar."

Jade Thirlwall flashes the middle finger and cries on Glastonbury debut
JADE took to the stage at Glastonbury this afternoon and fans were left blown away by her performance, with the singer using her platform to give the middle finger to Reform UK Glastonbury Festival goers were left in awe by Jade Thirlwall, who used her performance to boldly express her disdain for Reform UK. The Little Mix star took to the Woodsies stage on Saturday where she delivered a rousing rendition of her hit FUFN. The track, an acronym for 'F*** you for now', features a segment where JADE reels off a list of things she'd like to give the middle finger to. During her set, she chanted: "Reform! Transphobia! Selling arms! Genocide!", with the crowd echoing back a resounding "F**** you". Introduced by Doctor Who actor Ncuti Gatwa, the former Little Mix member became visibly emotional while introducing her top ten hit Angel of My Dreams. Fighting back tears, she shared with the audience: "This song [Angel of My Dreams] is literally me as a song, so thank you for showing me that that's enough." Angel of my Dreams delves into the peaks and troughs of JADE's 15-year career, with lyrics stating: "selling my soul to a SYCO, they say I'm so lucky". SYCO refers to Simon Cowell's record label, under which JADE was signed as part of Little Mix for their initial five albums. Dressed in a large fur hat, green jeans, and a white T-shirt emblazoned with "GLASTO", JADE also took a moment to pay tribute to her Little Mix bandmates. She expressed: "I can't begin to explain how grateful I am to those girls for literally changing my life. And who would have thought, eh? "That we'd have a Little Mix girlie up here on the Glastonbury stage. " The performance was a hit, with one attendee posting: "she killed it! I love that the crowd knew her songs and that she mentioned Little Mix too", reports Somerset Live Another fan enthused: "Jade is the biggest Mixer ever and I live for it". Some fans expressed disbelief that Little Mix had never graced Glastonbury's stages: "The fact that Little Mix never got to perform at Glastonbury is a CRIME. "I know JADE is going to absolutely give it her all for all three of them today." An impressed fan tweeted: "JADE's #Glastonbury set was Earth-shatteringly good. I have no words for how amazing that's made me feel for her". Another gushed: "That #Glastonbury set from JADE is the type that makes you go... yup, Pyramid stage soon". Her stance on political issues also garnered praise: "JADE screaming "FU to justifying genocide" to a sell out crowd at Glastonbury is honestly so iconic and one of the many reasons she is my absolute favourite". The fact that Jade's long-term boyfriend Jordan Stephens also performed at the festival was noted as charming. Jordan, known as one half of Rizzle Kicks, wowed the audience at the Other Stage on Friday, June 27, even inviting his mum to join him onstage.
