Sky faces another new rival that will offer UK homes a free way to watch TV

Daily Mirror15-06-2025
Sky is facing stiff competition from the new Freely TV service and now there are even more screens that feature this streaming service.
If you want to watch TV without needing an aerial or dish stuck to your chimney then you won't find a much better option than Sky Glass. This premium telly platform, which also now includes a cheaper Glass Air telly, lets homes tune into hundreds of live and on-demand channels via a broadband connection.
It's a tough TV to beat but it is being rivalled by Freely. This service launched last year and also offers an instant way to watch TV shows without an aerial. Since it was first unveiled, the list of telly manufacturers making Freely-powered screens has been increasing and now there's even more good news for those considering switching to it.

It's just been announced that smart TVs powered by the Roku operating system will soon get Freely pre-installed. That means UK homes wanting to access the streaming platform will be able to choose Roku-powered models made by Sharp, JVC, METZ and Polaroid.

This new partnership will bring Freely together with the Roku experience and offer advanced features including personalised content and discovery tools.
Speaking about the changes, Jonathan Thompson, CEO, Everyone TV, said: 'Offering freely on the Roku operating system is a major milestone for us, as we continue to expand reach for the free streaming platform.
"We're delighted that as a huge global player, Roku has recognised the importance of easy and seamless access to public service broadcast content for UK audiences and I look forward to seeing Freely smart TVs with Roku in market this summer.'
Does Freely fully match the Sky Glass experience?
Freely does offer a comprehensive TV guide, recommendations and even a new backwards telly feature which lets you go back in time to find things to watch.
It's fully powered by your broadband and even offers the ability to pause live TV.
Once the compatible TV has been purchased, there are no monthly fees to pay, so you can watch shows, sports and movies without reaching for the credit card.

It's a decent way to watch the telly, but Freely can't match Sky when it comes to channels and overall features. Sky Glass offers instant access to premium channels, and there is also better integration with streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+.
The firm's clever Playlists function also lets you store shows and movies to watch at a later date. One final thing to note is that Sky has worked hard on reducing the latency when watching live sport - that's something Freely can't currently match.

Sky Sports pack drops by £330 in record low Virgin Media deal as Premier League nears

Virgin Media has slashed the price of several TV bundles that include Sky Sports access just in time for the new Premier League season. The brand's Summer of Sports sale offers discounts of up to £336 across select bundles until September 2. The price cuts come less than a month before the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season on August 15. The most affordable package is Virgin's Bigger Combo bundle + Sports, which has been reduced from £65.99 to £54.99 per month – a saving of £264. This package includes more than 200 TV channels, including eight Sky Sports channels such as Main Event, Football and F1. It also provides 516Mbps fibre broadband for smooth, lag-free streaming and gaming. The Biggest Combo bundle is also reduced, offering the same Sky Sports channels and 516Mbps broadband, but also including Sky Cinema and a free subscription to Netflix Standard with ads. This bundle is now priced at £64.99, down from £78.99 – a massive £336 saving. Virgin says these are the 'lowest ever' prices for its sports packages. Additionally, there's a £120 discount on Virgin's packed Mega Volt bundle, which provides more than 230 TV channels with Sky Sports HD, Sky Cinema HD and Netflix Standard with ads, plus a whopping 1,130Mbps broadband, reports the Mirror. This comprehensive package also includes an O2 SIM card with unlimited data, minutes and texts, for a monthly cost of £79.99, reduced from £84.99. Virgin customers can add a discounted TNT Sports package to their subscriptions for £18, compared to the usual £30.99 rate when signing up directly. All of Virgin's TV and broadband plans now have a 24-month term, matching with those offered by competitors such as Sky. However, it's worth noting that Virgin intends to raise its prices every April, with the Bigger Combo bundle + Sports set to increase to £58.49 from April 2026 and £61.99 from April 2027. The Summer of Sport sale sees Virgin going toe-to-toe with Sky's own discounted sports package, the £35 Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle. Although this option doesn't include broadband, it does offer nine dedicated sports channels, 100 regular channels including Sky Atlantic, and free subscriptions to Netflix Standard with ads and Discovery+. However, boxing fans should be aware that many of the biggest fights are only available through one-off pay-per-view payments. For instance, the Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois fight on July 19 can be ordered from DAZN for £24.99 or is currently included for free with a DAZN Annual plan. Virgin customers keen on sports will have plenty to cheer about as they can look forward to a minimum of 215 Premier League matches each season from 2025/26, with Sky ramping up its live game broadcasts from 128 to at least 215. One satisfied Virgin customer left a glowing review on Trustpilot, saying: "10 out of 10 for Virgin Media. We have been with Virgin for a year now and are very pleased with the service, it's been fantastic to have all the sports channels as we love football. I was able to get a great deal." Another user encountered some technical issues, saying: "Sometimes my Virgin box freezes, turns off and resets, and it takes around seven minutes to reboot. This is annoying when watching football." While another happy customer said: "I'm extremely happy with the product and service. The broadband speed is second to none and extremely reliable. The TV package is also superb – Ok, it doesn't have Sky Atlantic but with Netflix, Sky Cinema and all the Sports channels included, there's enough to watch."

Major provider drops Samsung Galaxy tablet to just £3 a month – lowest price we've seen

SKY is offering a superb tablet deal that keeps costs low and payments simple. You can get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 LTE from only £3 a month, ideal if you'd rather dodge a big upfront payment. Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 LTE, from £3/month BUY FROM SKY Sky might not be the first place you think of when you're shopping for tech like this, but it's got some hidden gems. They offer some of the best monthly deals around, even on the big-name brands you're really after. The standout offer comes on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 tablet for just £3 per month over a 36-month contract. That gets you an all-rounder that covers all the basics, be that everyday browsing, streaming Netflix on the sofa, or keeping the kids entertained. But if you'd rather not be tied in for a full 3 years, Sky also gives you the option to pay £5 per month over 24 months, still just £120 overall. Either way, you're spreading the cost and avoiding the usual upfront sting that comes with most new tech. The Tab A9 LTE packs in an 8.7-inch display, 64GB of storage (with room to expand via microSD), and runs on Android 13. I haven't had this in my hands, but it promises a smooth, reliable performance, backed by a name you can trust. It's not trying to be the flashiest tablet out there, but for the price, it absolutely holds its own and then some. It has a 5100mAh battery, so you're looking at 10 to 15 hours of playtime, plenty for a bit of online window shopping or handing over to the kids for a bit of quiet. On that note, The Sun has rounded up a bunch of cheap UK days out, so you won't be short of things to entertain little ones this summer. If you're already a Sky customer, adding the tablet to your account is super easy, and even if you're not, you can still grab the deal through Sky's website. This is the LTE model, so you can use it over Wi-Fi without needing any data. But if you fancy staying connected on the go, there are cheap plans to choose from. Sky includes 100MB of free data every month for the first 12 months, just enough for a few emails or map checks in a pinch. And if you do want proper data for travel, streaming, or keeping the kids busy out and about, plans start from just £6 a month for 3GB. And if you're with Sky, named the UK's fastest major broadband provider, you'll have no lag when downloading or jumping on video calls. As always with these kinds of offers, stock can go quickly, especially on cheaper monthly deals. So if it sounds like your kind of bargain, don't hang around too long.
